just had a listen to a few of the Liverpool podcasts and there are varying degrees of give to Gerrard until the end of the season and stick with sSlot until the summer. There is nothing there that gives them any encouragement for the future from what I can see.

I think the board and Slot they had more time or more credit in the bank from last season and maybe more patience from the fans considering what happened in the summer but that isn’t the case. And I wonder if the players might feel the same. It will all come out eventually. It’s certainly opened my eyes a bit too and made me quite cynical about the fanbase as a whole. YNWA indeed.

One of the podcasters said that a Jota book will be coming out soon and that the guy writing it said that every player was in tears talking about it.

Perhaps a new manager is needed for a clean slate put this season behind us and hope that we can improve.

He played three at the back at Leverkusen because it suited their team. He didn't at Madrid or at his previous job in Sociedad. So he's not wedded to the idea, like an Amorim for example.

The credit in the bank is the reason Slots still in the job. Right now its 50 50 getting fifth. Too big of a gamble to just let it play out.

It's not a one off achievement though. In his first season at Leverkusen he took them from the relegation zone to 6th place. He then built on that in his second season and won the double.

He gave Madrid their best start to a season in 64 years (13 wins out of 14) and had the best win percentage of any of their managers in the last decade. It was politics and a certain player's ego that did for him there, but it's a totally different situation to Liverpool.

He also got his Real Sociedad B Team promoted unexpectedly, which is what sparked Leverkusen's interest in the first place.

The ideal scenario is we fall into 5th place, shake hands with Slot and say thanks for the title and we move on.

Can't sack him without a replacement in place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,439 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

I'd take that now tbh, but would it be greedy to spawn a FA Cup win while we're at it? I can't ask for the CL as that's just asking for too much.

It's possible and would be nice but 5th and a fa cup win would go a long way to the higher ups giving him another season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,916 ✭✭✭mormank

Well if he wins the champion's league he won't be going anywhere so it's too much to ask for in that sense. No board is gonna sack a manager who has a league title and champion's league win in his first two seasons.

Our run in is pretty tough and includes all the teams we are battling with for that place. Chelsea, Villa, Brentford are the last three games. You could argue it's in our own hands in that case but we are struggling and it's not getting better.

Reece James out for two months will hamper Chelsea.

Went off with a hamstring injury after 29 minutes

Brentford will be back in the mix tonight if they can close out this game. We’re pretty much back to 5 teams fighting for 3 places, and if United don’t drop off again it will be 4 teams fighting for 2, which is not good odds.

It’s still in our own hands, but our hands are covered in fairy liquid.

Shows how far we have fallen Wolves doing us a favour coming from two down against Brentford.

Christ he has had no luck, will he ever get back to playing again?

That whole crop of talented youngsters are absolutely cursed. When it's that many of them having these sorts of issues, you have to wonder if the club were totally mismanaging them or something.

Slot mentioned this previously and it’s why they have been so cautious with Rio.

Heavy metal football has it’s casualties.

Yeah surely it can't be a coincidence that they were all ravaged with injuries? Were they introduced to too much senior football too early in their development?

More talk on twitter tonight that Richard Hughes could be off to Saudi Arabia in the summer.

It's wild alright… very hard to tell, but with the differing amounts of senior games you'd have to reckon it's more related to training methods than senior competitive time. The most notable — Jayden Danns, James McConnell, Owen Beck, Conor Bradley, Stefan Bajcetic, Ben Doak — have all been crocked this season, and most of them have been injured in their careers a lot more than they've been fit. About the only ones in that age bracket to escape the curse were Bobby Clark and Lewis Koumas.

Most of Liverpool's greatest managers came from within, with no managerial experience.

Usually it's just online the ''Slot out'' opinions, but the booing from the Anfield crowd is worrying if you're Slot. He hasn't really endeared himself to Liverpool the place, or fans, he lives in Manchester, his neighbours are all City and United players, yes it means little if you're winning, but when you're losing it's just another stick to beat you with. He won't be getting Key to Liverpool like Klopp did , will never happen.

Slot didn't need to be another Klopp. Klopp built the club into a powerhouse again that could snatch wirtz, that could spend a record fee on isak. He was the motivator that got unfancied players to run through walls. Slot showed exactly what was needed last season but he just hasn't been able to kick on and rebuild.

We have had games this season where everyone did press, and run for whole game, those games did exist this season, and when we do it, we're great. Beating Madrid, draw away to Arsenal, 2-3 win away to Newcastle, beating WH at home, and Newcastle at home, away to Marseille, and Frankfurt , when we're on it ,we're great.

So inconsistent, and it's to do with effort , no excuses for the lack of effort against Spurs

We've dropped 11 points from the 90 minute mark. Those 11 points would have us in second.

It was a problem before Christmas and the management team has done nothing to stop it after Christmas.

As fans we want our team and manager to succeed but we also want to see them fight and play the way we've seen them play before.

What we're missing is a Gerrard type player who will drag a team up to standard and get us a goal / win when needed. Nobody on the field appears to be taking responsibility to pick up the performances.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,611 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

Does that 11 points include late goals?, as we've gained points after the 90th or very close to the 90th minute also, especially earlier in the season, so the nett loss is probably closer to 5 or 6 points. Still shouldn't be happening on such a regular basis, plus opposition teams know this, so keep going until the end, when normally they would just see out the match. We have absolutely no control towards the end of matches and have completely lost the ability to see out a match, it's not a surprise anymore if we concede late, in fact it's expected!

I'm all for moving on from net spend talk towards net points

Some positive story at least Hughes looks like he is slinking off to Saudi Arabia. When you consider they had a full year to plan for the transfer window and you look at the squad now, it's a calamity. As someone mentioned already, Cunha was a no brainer signing. It was clear Wirtz would struggle with the physicality of the PL. United went down the road of taking the hottest play maker style players from Germany Kagawa, mikithariyan and Sancho none worked out.

Wirtz has been terrific to watch but in net output its pretty much in line with the projected stats which suggested he would struggle to get double figures. Isak was a signing no fan would have made as we weren't setup to utilise him. Plus his downing tools at Newcastle etc. We know Bradley is injury prone and Frimpong isn't physical enough to play right back.

Slots system tweak has meant Salah is getting 70% less line breaking balls not saying he hasnt been kack with the stuff he has received but was it just expected change the system to slow resets and Salah is going to continue doing what he did.

Macca played 166 games in 3 seasons before this and is asked to cover more ground than he probably should be - he gets swallowed up in possession repeatedly.

We lack physicality and speed. There is also a lack of leadership on the pitch.

Cunha hasn't been great either this season and has only really started to play well in the last few weeks (coincidentally when United stopped playing slow aimless ball) he has played mostly as a LW or CF and has 7 goals and 3 assists. Wirtz has 4 goals and 2 assists in the league with most of his games as a 10 but dropping stupidly deep taking him away from where he can actually be in a position to create or score.

I'm convinced a different system and a better style would get far more from the players we have and I've been saying it since September or October.

Edit: Wirtz should have more goals though because he's missed a few good chances.
