Another question for @ruddy1987 if you don't mind?

Renewal due 1st April with Laya, current plans are Flex 500 Explore for 57 year old and 52 year old , Prosper for 20 and 21 year olds, Signify Care for 15 year old. No current health issues and minimal day to day expenses thankfully.

Ortho cover on Flex 500 Explore seems to have reduced with a 20% shortfall at renewal, but am happy to cover the copayment for a better value plan.

Whatever advice you can offer would be appreciated, I'm convinced the current multitude of offering is designed to confuse.

Inspire is still a good plan but price has increased a lot. If you don't need hospitals in Cork, Kerry or Waterford Transform Plus is a really good option that has 80% ortho still and good cover.

2 younger kids should do on flex 125 explore and maybe older one on Inspire Plus?

    hi @ruddy1987

I’m wondering if you could give me some advice on alternative renewal plans please, currently with Laya on simply connect, two adults, both 60, renewal due 01/05/26, it’s getting very expensive now, I am wondering if there are similar plans but cheaper, thank you in advance

Thanks for the guidance Ruddy, appreciate it. Its a minefield at times.

I'll look at some Laya options without full ortho, and see if there are similiar but cheaper options for the renewal before April 1st.

Hi Ruddy, hope all is well. My partner and I have just moved back from Australia and would appreciate your advice on a suitable health insurance plan. We're based in Dublin.

We are currently with VHI International and would like to stay with VHI to avoid exemptions related to pre-existing medical conditions.

    Key inclusions include:

    • Maternity & fertility cover
    • Private room
    • Don't need high tech hospital
    • Consultant visits
    • Physio visits

Which plan do you think might be best? We were having a look at PMI 45 10 but would be good to get your perspective on it. Thanks

PMI 45 10 is a good value and suitable plan. Only flags are it excludes hospitals in Cork and Waterford. If thats not likely to be an issue its an excellent plan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

The key question here is do they need full orthopaedic cover, if they do its actually not a bad priced plan now. If open to taking on a co payment or excess here significant savings can be made.

You are a very complex family with such a range of plans. This smart but hard to give quick answers without a detailed deep dive. At a high level you could consider moving to an Enhanced care plan with VHI or a My Plan with Irish Life (both effective 31st of March for savings). Typically VHI have best Young Adult rates (21-25) so i would consider moving your older kids to an enhanced care plan effective 31st of March

Thanks Ruddy appreciate it. For myself (male) who only needs up to 1,000 outpatient cover, is PMI 45 10 still the best value or are there other more suitable options with VHI?

    Hi Ruddy/Everyone

Laya Simply Connect for 2 adults and 2 kids, due for renewal soon, any particular plan variations or discounts we should be going for. Haven't gotten the new prices yet, but looking like a substantial increase that I'd like to mitigate as much as possible.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

if you want a lower level of cover I’d be looking at something like one of the enhanced care plan or if slightly higher I’d be looking at PMI 43 16.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Firstly no reason to have kids on that plan as likely they don’t need orthopaedic cover? Any particular needs for kids, shag age?

Secondly do you need full orthopaedic cover or could you take on a co payment to save premium?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,681 ✭✭✭A2LUE42

Quite a few sports injuries over the years, but hadn't considered the orthopedic part of the plan as something to remove. Something to review and consider, thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

yes if you reduce your orthopaedic massive savings potential. A plan like transform plus (if not south based) or with VHI a plan like PMI 43 16 or healthguide 2 with Irish life.

If kids staying with Laya I’d put them on a plan like inspire plus.

Hi Ruddy, thanks for the prompt reply, don’t need full ortho at the moment but you never know when you might need a hip or knee replacement, could we afford the excess, I don’t know how much these procedures cost, I suppose we could up the excess, thanks a million

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

I’d be looking at VHI or Irish life. VHI have 20% shortfall on most plans and you could get a similar plan for c€1,000 cheaper. Similar savings potentially with Irish life on healthguide 2. Advantages of Irish life is co payment is fixed for orthopaedics so you know on health guide 3 shortfall is €3,000.

in there of costs a typical hip of knee can cost anywhere between €15-30k depending on where and procedure. So shortfalls as a percentage can be very significant.

Thanks @ruddy1987, I'll take a look at what you suggest. Varying plans for the different ages involved does indeed make it more complicated but one the years I've tried to not pay for cover that's unlikely to be needed for young adults and children.

I appreciate your advice, I'd imagine you've saved people a lot of more here.

Hi @ruddy1987 I would like some advice if you can spare some time please?

The whole family myself, wife, young adult and child are currently on Precision 600 Connect paying about €350 per month. I plan to keep my wife on Precision 600 (As orthopaedic may be a consideration shortly) and move the rest of us to MY Plan 500 to save on the monthly cost just wondering would you suggest anything else? Thanks for your time, your advice here is excellent.

What I would recommend for your wife would be to take out a new policy online effective 31st of March on Precision 600. She will get 5% discount on the plan online and crucially avoid the 1st of April benefit change until next March (and avoid April price increase).

My Plan 500 is a great value plan (€976 per adult) if you take it out also effective the 31st of March and avoid the price increase on 1st of April.

    Ruddy

    Looking for advice.

Family of 4. Parents 50f 53m. Twin boy and girl turning 5 in June. Both kids have ASD. Dad type 2 diabetes.

Currently Dad and kids on Laya Prime. Mom on Laya Inspire.

Kids have full medical card but a lot of therapy like speech language, behaviour therapy, music therapy or occupational therapy. Probably need dental and optical for kids. Average therapy session cost 100 and we get 40 back. 40 seems to be the max refund regardless of session cost. Have had sessions costing 300 and only getting 40 back. Speech therapy is weekly, music therapy is also weekly but not covered. OT is once a month

    Renewal is April 2st.

Paying monthly, about 420 a month. Looking to keep everyday cover and improve refunds on kids therapy costs if possible. Was told there may be a VHI policy that does 75% on therapy sessions.

PMI 24 10 is what you need to move the kids to. That’s the plan that will give 75% back here.

Do you need the private room on prime or what’s the reason to be on that plan? Just trying to map alternatives.

For your wife I’d potentially look at PMI 43 16 or take out healthguide 2 effective 31st March with irish life.

    Looking for some advice.

With Laya at present, family of four with two kids under 3. One kid with ASD diagnosis. Have a corporate "Prosper Advanced" plan at the moment giving 75% back for me and kid with diagnosis. Basic 'Prosper' for OH and one kid.

Need to move off this play around June. What's my best options for something similar and going at it alone?

    Hi Ruddy .

Myself and OH moving off Laya Optimum Prime soon due to employment contract change . Have been on VHI 5310 before this .

Just need semi private in Private but need quick access as OH has had cardiac and cancer treatment in the past and I have T2 Diabetes and a precancerous condition that is being monitored and potential treatment privately .

Retired and semi retired ( contract ) .
Just wondering if the VHI plan would be the best fit for us to go back to ?

Do you need the private room on prime or what’s the reason to be on that plan?

Was expecting to need surgery last year and a bunch of physio for myself, my physio laughed and said an orthopedic is never happen unless they have a knife in their hand and I didn't need surgery based on the scans. So I can probably go with lower cover myself.

    PMI 24 10

That's capped at 4k per person right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

if you wanted to keep private room coverage one decent option with Laya is Connect Simplicity.

    PMI 24 10 outpatient limit is €4,000.

If on pmi 53 10 in the past and happy with that cover I’d be staying with this as well priced and good cover for premium.

honestly you are in big trouble if you want as good a cover as you had on prosper advanced as it was super value.

You need to decide what is important:

    1. biggest question is do you need full orthopaedic cover
    2. Do you need private room coverage
    3. What level of outpatient benefit do you need, 50% or 75%
