if my memory serves me right,I think that there is -= or was up to recently- a good relationship between Iran and Europe . They were talking to eachother at least.
So, the following idea would wipe the floor from under Trump.
Instead of sending war ships to ‘help out’ Trump a consortium of countries eg UK , Ireland, Malta, Denmark, Greece, Germany, Italy , Australia, Japan , and suchlike , should approach Iran with a view to offering to mediate between the US and Iran so as to arrange a ceasefire or to bring the war to an end

The consortium should inform @Trump of it’s strategy and therefor any of the consortiums members sending warships to the Strait would be HIGHLY INAPPROPRIATE

FFS, a vain effort to inflate his approval ratings, he's surrounded by yesmen, nobody to tell him no. He's a walking study in the value of diversity despite rallying against it.

You'd nearly have more respect for him if his true motivation was to deflect from Epstein, recognizing the humanity of fight or flight reaction, however despotic the actions that led to it.

Reportedly Iranian oil and gas exports have increased during this war.

Reports Iran also threatening the Red Sea route probably through the Houthis.

Zelensky saying that Russia is providing drones as well as intelligence to Iran.

He has found a way of lowering America's reputation to a geologically lower level. Is he running for Pres?

Yep, it's incredible that Trump is now actively assisting Putin to attack American forces, yet nobody in the US media appears to be pointing that out. How Trump has not been impeached yet (in this term) is a stain on that country.

    Fuck me.

    "A dozen thermonuclear detonations".

Sure what could possibly go wrong.

Hard to believe that these people are in positions of power.

I recall an old salesman telling me he sold more product with orders written on a beer mat then orders inputted to computer systems...

Trump is more of a back of a beer mat guy when it comes to orders and procedures

In Trump's alternative reality world: [But if the rest of the world doesn't help us to stop the Iranians stopping oil tankers through the Straits, we'll do it ourselves with the US Navy - and maybe the israeli Navy]…. Trump on Truth Social this evening or tomorrow….

You talk about others and hyperbole and then you post links that belie what you are saying as you take sections out of context .

The headings of these links alone are a clue to what concerns are legitimately held about interference by Trump with the upcoming midterms .

    Just one example here …

"Asked about Trump’s musings at an event sponsored by The Atlantic this week, Arizona’s top election official, Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, a Democrat, said this:

“Look, you can’t cancel the election… We’ve got a whole bunch of scenarios that we’re playing through to make sure that we’re prepared for the types of processes that might be necessary to preserve our democracy so that if somebody tries to cancel something, if somebody tries to take some stuff they’re not entitled to, we can go to the courts, get the orders, and hopefully have the backup of law enforcement to make sure that we can move forward through this.”

"The fact that we’re running through these scenarios in the first place should tell you something about the health of our democracy,” Fontes added.

To that end, he would not elaborate on what scenarios they’re preparing for.

“I don’t want to give the bad guys any ideas,” Fontes said."

    https://www.votebeat.org/2026/01/26/why-trump-cant-cancel-2026-midterm-elections/

Either you are not reading your own links or you are cherry picking from them .

The laws protect the elections and the states running them but Trump and Noem et al have spent the last year or so dismantling safeguards , to cyber hacking for one , not to mention all the threats to individual Democrat states about elector rolls and voter information .

If States election officials are worried about what" the bad guys " might do to the midterm elections , I can only wonder why an intelligent person like yourself isn't at all concerned.

You wouldn't be trying to handwave concerns away now would you or try to detract from a very real issue , would you ?

Or maybe you are secretly trying to send us messages about the dangers without it looking like you are ??

Certainly thanks for those links , very interesting to read .

Custard Brains! It's the only explanation, their brains have somehow been entirely replaced with a viscous flavourless custard incapable of thought. I could take billions of years for the kind of evolutionary leap required to make a sensible decision at the ballot box nevermind campaign fir a change to the system so this kind of bullshit never happens again in the US.

Perhaps pre about 2023 anyway (?). The invasion of Ukraine and the Iranian decision to spit in their faces and provide large amounts of military support to Putin when he badly needed a dig out kind of ended that, and there's no good will for Iran's govt. left in Europe. A plague on all their houses (from the European point of view)?

He really can’t open his mouth without offending somebody:

Speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said countries such as China, which rely more heavily on oil shipments passing through the strait, should contribute to securing it.

“I’m demanding that these countries come in and protect their own territory, because it is their territory. It’s the place from which they get their energy. And they should come and they should help us protect it,” Trump said.

When you listen to Vietnam vets, much of the animosity is directed at their often feckless allies, the ARVN, rather than the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese. I’d say many in the Gulf are experiencing this at the moment.

Because he's part of what they are. I guarantee you that the MAGA/GOP vote will never go lower than that, probably no lower than 45%. They can always rely on that much incorrigible lumpenproletariat, but on its own it's not enough, and the longer this goes on the less likely anyone else is to touch them.

Education is not a strong point across the board in America as it is in Ireland . Of the top 10 countries for education in the world , Ireland is a close second after Canada and the US for all its size and importance in the world is 8th. (Coincidentally Israel is just behind it at 9th ! )Apart from those that can afford Ivy League college education or get sports scholarships most Americans only get a high school diploma .

Perhaps Secretary Fontes would be good enough to explain a situation where law enforcement in the State of Arizona cannot be relied upon? Both he and Col. Glover work for the same person. It's also worth noting that "the bad guys" is not specifically referring to the administration, but actions by various other actors. If you watch the interview (at about 18 minutes in, or did you not watch it?) you see he's talking about anything from assassinations to obstruction by state employees (who are being criminally charged and whose actions had no effect anyway)

Sec. Fontes and I do share one very important thing in common, however. Much to @relax carry on 's apparent disdain, we both believe the solution lies in the structure of the country and its checks and balances.

If you think we're a bit polarised and violent now, it was far worse in the late 1800s.

Tbh I think its less about the level of education but the quality...a lot of people with low attainment are capable of semi logical thought.......I also think education has been displaced by the likes of fox and social media etc...where balance and critical thought are discouraged by design..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 591 ✭✭✭pah

It's not just that they are dumb, it's that they don't care about things outside their own circle. OH travels to California for work, fairly liberal area and well educated circles in terms of co-workers but they almost all seem to have no opinion about what's going on. They are the apathetic one third of people that couldn't be arsed to vote and just plod along with an I'm alright Jack attitude. That's another level of US ignorance people find hard to fathom.

    @Goldengirl

I do wonder if Israel includes rabbinic studies in their comparative stats. Plus if I'm not mistaken I think some university in Florida had a pizza making degree.

I think in our modern age comparing countries by stem graduates is probably more telling of where nations are at.

It has some bearing or it would not be a standard.

And yes . Agree with you about Fox News and Conspiracy SM displacing critical thinking .

Literacy is high but not so much maths and science and one would wonder what sort of history or geography or social science is being taught .

They have always had great universities plenty of money sloshing around for research and development but the falling level of education has caused concern that they will have to.impory more people and scholars to keep those standards going .

But what does Trump do ? He ensures that their best people are fleeing to other countries to study and do their research by closing off universities to anyone who might think differently .

It seems NATO nations [majorly] are giving Trump the brush-off on Naval assistance on breaking the Iranian "embargo" on the Straits.

Edit: deleted mention of a Hungarian Navy being volunteered to assist Trump. They don't have a navy. The blessing of being a landlocked country.

On the issue of NATO Navies getting involved in breaking the alleged Iranian "embargo", that might not go down well with Putin as it would put NATO in the position of giving oil tankers an eye over while shepherding them through the straits. It might give other NATO countries involved in the sanctions placed on strange oil tankers moving Russian oil around the world ideas of their own beyond those Trump might have in mind, seeing as he has agreed to let Russia off the sanctions hook from checks by the US.

Trump telling the world now that he's destroyed everything and in the same breath asking for help from foreign navies.

Getting into Universities or 3 rd level education by being a good footballer or swimmer etc must surely affect the quality of education at higher level .
