At the very least, I would think that NATO/EU member states should very publicly state that there's no question of any European troops being sent to the ME while Trump and Netanyahu are showering the region with missiles. Get some senior ministers on US TV saying "first, tell your guys to stand down; and when we're happy that you're not going to kill ours in a 'friendly fire' incident, then we'll move in to clean up your mess". The message really needs to be pushed to the US public that this is Trump's war, and if it's all gone pear-shaped, it's his fault.

Alongside that, it'd be worth pointing out that there are currently five US warships in the Persian Gulf, so why aren't they escorting ships through the Strait? Let them be first to show that it's safe to follow the Chinese and the Iranian vessels who seem to have no problem getting through unmolested.

And for good measure, it could also be pointed out that "someone" very recently suggested that there was a clear and present danger to Europe's northern frontier from the Chinese and the Russians. So obviously we're going to need to prioritising protecting our North Atlantic territories from invasion before being bothered about brown fellas in the Middle East.

Remember Trump attacking Zelenskyy in the Oval Office Ambush: "you're gambling with World War Three'!

Yes, this is the same Trump who attacked Iran and is inviting countries globally to intervene.

Or option 6; he simply declares war is won and agree to some form of peace deal ("the bestest deal; Iran will sell their oil to us") and walks away from it all which is what's far more likely to happen. He will not drag the war out to November because it will not give him any powers of relevance for the election and even someone as brain rotted as him can see it would cost him more. I'd put it beyond a 50/50 a deal is struck in the next 30 days because Trump need a win and Iran because they are not suicidal. The main impediment is going to be Israel (shocker…) and how they can make the deal look like he won while Iran don't lose enough face from it all.

    Good article from Axios

Behind the Curtain: Trump's escalation trap

For five years in office, President Trump has operated with intuition, impulse and improvisation.

The Iran war, now entering Week 3, is the first time Trump's style has made it impossible for him to easily talk or improvise his way out.

Why it matters: Trump could wind up trapped between his caprice and the realities of war. He expects a quick, clear victory. But unlike tariffs that can be swiftly imposed and rescinded, the war's outcome is beyond unilateral control and quick fixes. And Iran gets a say.

^ this is the way he works, altho it is worrying that the expeditionary force is on the way. He may try to take Kharg and then call it a victory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,354 ✭✭✭aidanodr

I have my doubts re the Expeditionary force will be on its way to KHARG. See map screen shot below and where KHARG ( Marked with Red Pin ) is vs Strait of Hormuz ( Circled in red ) and Iran. Ùnless they go via kuwait. And even then they will 24/7 be pumelled from the Iran side

The area between Kharg and Strait of hormuz is hugely mountainous ( the Zagros and Dena mountains ) along the coast and apparently has been fortified with deep bunkers for a long time

Anyone remember Kristi Noem's questioning by Congress a fortnight ago (it seems like years ago!)…

The Justice Department will receive a recommendation later today to conduct an investigation into whether former U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem committed perjury in her testimony to Congress earlier this month.

The vice chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee will ask the Attorney General to review whether Noem knowingly made false statements during hearings conducted by the panels two weeks ago.

The recommendation for a criminal investigation will cite at least four statements made by Noem, including her responses to questions about a controversial, taxpayer-funded $220 million ad campaign, which prominently featured Noem.

EXCLUSIVE: Justice Dept to receive referral today to probe Kristi Noem for perjury

Trump's proposal for a Hormuz Coalition doesn't appear to be going too well…

Never waste a crisis here for Trump.

He can use the excuse of his stupid Iran war first as cover to help Putin with 1 key ask he probably had (remove US sanctions on Russian energy exports) and now to pursue another longstanding desire (further distance the US from NATO, when other members won't play their part in his play of obedient "vassals" of the "king" when called on to support this war).

I think any European countries he asks for support should ignore him as much as possible without raising the temperature (e.g. polite fob offs that they'll consider it…) and concentrate on Ukraine for the moment.

In addition, Kharg is going to be a right royal pain to take. It’s small, almost completely covered in either oil infrastructure, military infrastructure, and the town of Kharg itself. There are no beach heads for an amphibious landing, the coast appears from what I’ve seen to be rocky and too steep for LCACs to negotiate, with pretty much no space between the shore and the “hinterland” for any assault force to get itself organised before proceeding further. That leaves only a helicopter assault as an option in my eyes, and the only potential LZ would be be the island’s airport, which is small and can easily be covered in it’s entirety by machine gun emplacements on either side.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

More Freedom of Speech being curtailed by Pentagon Pete!

The Pentagon will curtail coverage of war zones — and March Madness

The Defense Department's new memo will likely also stifle much of Stars and Stripes' daily newsgathering operations — including its ability to cover the new war in Iran or other combat zones where its military readers may be deployed.

That's because the memo prohibits Stars and Stripes from publishing most stories from wire services, like the Associated Press or Reuters. Many news organizations publish stories from such wire services to inform readers about important news they do not have the resources to cover themselves. In the case of Stars and Stripes, that means its readers will not see stories or photos from Iran or other war zones where it does not currently have journalists working.

Stars and Stripes also will not be able to utilize wire services to cover lighter but popular news, like the upcoming March Madness college basketball tournament and other major sporting events. The memo even explicitly bans Stars and Stripes from publishing comic strips.

One thing that gets me is the stupidity of having the persons in charge of criminal prosecution matters being linked directly with the law makers, their hands in each others pockets; so to speak, enabling some-one from Trumps monied background to subvert US society to do what he wants for more financial gain. I know we have some of the same like-minded people here in Ireland but there's a big BUT there….

The US version of the greedy git; Trump, already has enough millions in his pockets to survive several consecutive Wall Street crashes. He's quite proud of his ability to go into bankruptcy and spring back from the mud untouched. Then he's given the golden prize, the office of the presidency from which he uses his name to get more financial gain by legally attaching it to US institutions and charging fees to the institutions for that "privilege".

It seems to me that there is no point in shouting at the herd in the US that elected him twice while they knew he would then continue to bleed them dry, time to just cut off relationship with them until they see sense and count the dollars they have given him and the zero financial return he has given them, just empty words instead.

Wasn't too long ago when the Orange Buffoon was saying only the US was doing anything in NATO and now he's looking for their help.

Someone should point out some of the key points in Article 5:

"an armed attack against one NATO member shall be considered an attack against all members" - The US is the aggressor

"It applies specifically to attacks within Europe, North America, or North Atlantic territory north of the Tropic of Cancer" - Get a map Donald (if you can read)

"It requires unanimous consensus among NATO allies to be officially invoked" - If only you had some friends left 😁

So F**K the right off and sort your own mess

The Gaza ceasefire is HOLDING UP 100% apart from the 600+ Palastiniabpns killed by Israel since it started to be implemented . The number is SOoooooooooo insignificant that Trump has even made no comment. I’ say that 10,000 need to be killed before Trump. Would ‘even get out of bed’ to make a comment!!!!!!!

For some reason I cannot see Mr Rutte putting such a scenario to Mr Trump.

One can’t stand up while bowing down.

when a dog pisses on the floor of the house, they say rub his nose in it and eventually he’ll get the idea not to do it again. Trumps nose needs to be rubbed in this. Not that he’ll learn.

    Also promises made, something something.

New polls out today from CNN. Trumps approval rating remains unchanged at 41%. 45% say the Iran conflict is important to them compared to 85% saying the same about the economy.

I don't think he'll go with a ground invasion; even he knows how that will go down domestically. In fact, I think it might cause some issues within the military after the mess of the past couple of weeks, and this may be why they haven't got near escorting tankers themselves. There may be some limited ground incursions such as Kharg Island.

I agree his main reason for launching this was to deflect from Epstein. Otherwise the main item of news over the past fortnight would have been the DOJ document outlining the allegations made by the 13-year-old, however unverified.

I still think he'll declare victory and end operations unilaterally, perhaps not as soon as originally intended. I think this is why he's so desperate to get the Europeans etc involved, in the hope that they'll absorb the bulk of the regime's vengeance while trying to get the Straits reopened.

More moves to control the media.

MSNOW will be a major focus of investigation but the horse has bolted. There are many other sources of information these days.
