I’m basically clearing all the nails off the road for all of you at this point. Last Thursday I got my third nail in less than a year since getting the car. The other two times I managed to get the punctures repaired, but apparently this one couldn’t be fixed, which is weird because it was on the top of the tyre like the others.

Since I didn’t really have a choice, I had to replace the tyre, but now I feel like I might’ve been overcharged. How much did you pay for yours? I got hit with €295.

I think the original tyres for the size it comes with are around 210 euro (incl VAT): https://www.oponeo.ie/tyre/continental-ecocontact-6-235-45-r19-99-v-xl-vol#644900834. . I recently switched to 18 inch wheels because I'm no longer 20 years old and I start to feel all the bumps, the Continental EcoContact 7s for that size of wheel are around 170 so slightly cheaper. Not sure what the Nexen tyres cost that BYD puts on them at the moment.

By the way, being back on the previous infotainment version / OTA update (2506) has definitely fixed my issue with the GPS and app connection. GPS has been rock solid since, app has never complained about the weak reception in the area I park it in next to my house.

Still have the latest module updates that came as part of the OTA, just the infotainment screen's version is back to what it was on the last update (so no profile icon, no third seat memory position, no handy shortcut to recall the seat memory positions). Call volume is fine again as well. I saw on Discord that 2602 is now available, so a version higher than the 2511 update that was recently released. There's no clear changelog though other than some user reports that the TuneIn app is now available in the BYD app store and the check latest version UI/UX is different where it no longer shows the pop-up but is handled in the same page. So no clue if that actually addresses & fixes the connection issues the last update has brought.

That update has definitely caused issues, the sooner they roll out another one the better!

When going to the MSL north Dublin for then 1 year service, did you get a loaner for free or you had to pay for it?

I’m very interested in your comment about switching to 18” wheels. I think the Seal is an excellent car, but I’d also prefer a more comfy ride, even at the expense of some of the handling.

Do you have a picture of the 18” wheels and where did you get them (and cost).
Did you need to make any other modifications such as dampers, calipers, tire pressure monitoring system, speed calibration etc.

Did it make much of a difference to the comfort/handling/economy of the car?

So here's a picture (yes I need to clean my car):

    image.png

I didn't go for the official 18 inch BYD Seal wheels (https://www.topbyd.com/collections/byd-seal-parts/products/18-wheels-for-byd-seal) as they're kind of expensive and they don't stock them here at BYD in Ireland (base model with 18 inch wheels isn't sold here). I went with these instead as I liked the matte black look with the green of my car: https://www.oponeo.ie/alloy-wheel/brock-b32-skm-7-50x18-5x120-00-et45-00#74086948

For the tyres I went with https://www.oponeo.ie/tyre/continental-ecocontact-7-225-50-r18-95-v--#646442562, (Continental EcoContact 7), they're the same size/circumference as the old tyres on there so you don't have to recalibrate the speed. I've had the old tyre pressure monitors moved to the new wheels & tyres as I don't plan on putting the 19" wheels back. I didn't do any other modifications, all good and it was an easy swap really. They fitted 2 tyre pressure monitors in the wrong position but somehow the car recognizes this idiocy and self corrects in about 30 minutes of driving.

Comfort wise I'd say it's a noticeable increase, you don't notice the exact texture of the road you're driving on anymore. Feels a bit softer overall, slightly less road noise, better protection against potholes. Handling wise you do notice it's a bit less sharp in the corners, but I'm fine with that. Directly after the swap I found the car to feel a bit lighter in steering and handling, probably because of the overall lighter wheels.

I can't really give any comment on the efficiency part yet, cold & wet weather has a big impact overall so I'm waiting to see what kind of average I'm getting this summer as I know what my previous average was last year (around 20.1 kWh/100km). I'm still looking for aero covers for the longer trips to the mainland to offset the spokes design of the new wheel but haven't been able to find anything that would fit yet.

Thank you so much. That’s brilliant. I’ll definitely look into this.

I see that the Bright Motor Group are now dealers for BYD- I wonder where they stand on the MSL tax???🤔

    What's the MSL tax?

I'm guessing delivery and admin costs. Which are usually a fixed price add on. All dealers have them varying values.

Had a scary moment with the car today came up to roundabout there was a car on it, I let it go and then as I was about to go onto roundabout myself the car really slammed on the brakes and seatbelts tightened, it gave us a real fright, crazy especially as the roundabout was then empty, lucky there wasn't a car behind me!

That happened me a few years ago in a 2021 Renault Clio. Those automatic breaking systems can be very dangerous especially when they bug out for what ever strange reason. The road was empty ahead of me and luckily no one behind me.

I was nervous driving the car after but it never done it again.

Going to look at a 2025 BYD Seal Excellence demo model in Charles Hurst BYD in Belfast during the week. Has anyone had any dealings with them?I know from checking on various Facebook groups Charles Hurst does not get great reviews but just interested in peoples experience in the BYD Belfast branch.

I used to live in Belfast wouldn’t go near Charles hurst I’ve heard plenty of bad things from work colleagues, didn’t realise they had the byd franchise as last time I was up there and noticed the byd it was slightly away from the main Charles hurst dealerships

They are shocking, BYD is co-located with Cupra in the same building. I bought (and subsequently) returned an approved used Formentor a few months ago. I bought it based on videos and their word, level of prep in terms of cleanleness was shocking and there were multiple issues with it they wouldn't resolve. Even the simple stuff they got wrong, they advertised as one owner, reaffirmed that on phone calls only to be discovered it had two owners after. They are a bad bunch and I have a friend with similar poor experience.

It's happened to me a couple of times as well. Almost always at roundabouts as I'm approaching. I don't bother braking as I know the car on it will clear and the car thinks I'm going to drive straight into it. It's horrible.

I'm considering a BYD. Looking at the finance options on the website, it's quite attractive. However the delivery fee is a bit cheeky imo. 1650!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 34,892 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Have you bought a new car before ? Delivery and admin fees are the norm . They also vary by car and brand. But they exist and are rarely under 1k.

They may even go up considering the price of diesel for ships. That's the reality in many countries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭reactadabtc

I never have. This will be my first so thats good to know. It just feels a bit sneaky as you can't pay the advertised price really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 34,892 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Fair, unfortunately it's how the industry works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 92 ✭✭jaymac430

Also, that price might include a service pack. On the Seal (in 20244) it included 2 services, and tires replaced free of charge if required (within 2 years / 40k km).

Try driving on the Walkinstown roundabout 6 times a day. Used to happen to me regularly until I changed my approach. Reported it back on this thread about a 100 pages ago. Scary at first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 368 ✭✭Sealman

I thought that subsequent softwate upgrades had cured it though, obviously not!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 368 ✭✭Sealman

What did you do differently to prevent it happening?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭BrianOgre

Seems obvious but letting the car on the roundabout go past that bit further out of camera view and then setting off with a heavy right foot. You have to take your chance when you can on the Walkinstown roundabout or you're there for the day.

I thought the car had cleared the camera when it happened to me but must have been still just inside, unluckily for me!☹️☹️☹️
