Just have to be very very careful. There's a pretty vast graveyard of kids careers who were overplayed too young, with too much pressure on developing limbs, ligaments, and muscles. Barca in particular have a pretty incredible record of ruining players by doing this. Ansu Fati, Pedri and Gavi all lads of 23 or under who'll likely never have the careers they could have had. Even Yamal looks well off the player he was last year, after being thoroughly massively overplayed for his age.

Now, Arsenal have been very responsible with Dowman, so I've no issue with the way they've used him. But the idea of 'if they're good enough they're old enough' ignores physiology.

Pep seems to have given up on Foden. Some come down from the player of the year in 2024.

he's still brilliant obviously with incredible technique, but already you can see how he plays is different, with less agility at speed. He's been using more strength and direct running. He's also already had 3 groin/hernia layoffs this season, which is exactly the area you'd expect to start seeing break down in that sort of young player.

I'd really worry about him in the medium term the way Barca have used him relentlessly for 3 seasons already. It's a story we've seen with them too many times.

I mean we see Evan Fergusons body falling apart and he started with Bohs at 16.

I missed the goalposts moving from 16 year olds playing senior football.

The relegation battle will be really tasty. The Tottenham vs Nottingham next Sunday has become extremely important.

No easy games at all in Premier League anymore.

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

Mavrapanos 💪 once a gooner always a gooner. Hats off to him. Man of the match tonight.

Rooney was eligible for Ireland at 16, FAI contacted him about an u21 call up

I said when Evan was playing at 14. Hasn't done him any good. Look at the top 10 youngest players, most are one and done, they are open to exploitation and while I wouldn't go as far as describing it as abuse, it is wrong.

I hope Dowman makes it long term, but it's not ideal Arsenal already did it with Nmweri a few years ago, and he hasn't progressed. Kids are not developed mentally or physically at 15,xlubs have a duty of care and there should be stricter rules about it IMHO. 16 year old can't play Adult GAA with their neighbours.

Irrelevant today though, Arsenal have the cat in the bag after today's results.

I don't know if you can say Nwanweri has definitely not progressed... He's only just gone 18 since the beginning of March.

He was getting into the team last year and looked decent, but there's more competition this year from more established players, so he wasn't getting game time and was loaned to Marseille, where's he done well... I'd be very surprised if he's not integrated into the first team again next year.

I think the younger a player starts the more likely the career peters out prematurely. Rooney was a freak of nature at 16. He was a number of years further on physically. I remember reading previously that Didier Drogba wasn't able for regular professional training until he was 23 or 24.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,111 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Rooney had a particular body type that wasn’t exceptionally athletic and he liked a drink and a smoke.

Obviously there’s Ronaldo and Messi but there is also Luka Modric, Zlatan, Paulo maldini, Ryan Giggs, Roberto Carlos, Totti, Eto’o, Seedorf who all debuted at 16 or 17 and played till they are very late 30s or more. That’s extreme cases but there are plenty of legends that started at 16 or 17 and played top level into mid 30s and went out on their own terms like Henry and Luis Figo.

I’m not saying there is no physical affects to starting that young but this perception that they are being thrown to the wolves and it’s a major problem is OTT.

Man United have a Dowman like kid in JJ Gabriel (15) he will get minutes next season because the worry is he'll leave if not.

I hope they manage him correctly.

wouldnt surprise me if he gets minutes this season. From the videos I’ve seen he’s special special.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,339 ✭✭✭Iseedeadpixels

    He can't unfortunately.

He was 14 when the season started, rules state 15 is the minimum.

Would have been nice on the final day if there was nothing to play for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,924 ✭✭✭Damien360

Some of that OTT comes from ex football players like Michael Owen. The story goes that himself and Gerard were coming through at the same time but Owen advanced to the full team sooner and that was detrimental to his career later in life. His body wasn't ready. So many sports have the same story so it's not unique to football.

But, we have seen plenty of young players in the PL especially, labelled as failures because they don't develop fast enough. A teenage brain is an over confident idiot. Bodies develop differently but you can see how injury occurs when you place a young teenage underdeveloped lad against a developed man, so care needs to be taken. Teams and fans have to manage expectations but given the money involved, they are all impatient.

I'm surprised to read that Drogba wasn't ready until 23/24 given his physical size.

It seems that the pacier players suffer more as things like hamstrings can really damage your later career, Owen being a prime example. Compare the likes of Milner and Rooney were never the fastest to the likes of Owen and Sterling.

I really don't think we need to over-think this… physically undeveloped muscles, bones, ligaments, and joints are not going to be able to handle the same strains and stresses as fully developed muscles, bones, ligaments, and joints.

Things that won't cause big problems for a fully developed person may cause problems in a still-growing adolescent. It doesn't mean they WILL get crocked, it means the odds are a little further against them than they would be a few years later. Name trading of players who managed to get through doesn't really mean all that much, as its purely anecdotal. In reality we'll never know the names of many of the players most impacted, as their careers just never started (I'd be looking at overexposure to senior training as well in this, not just first team minutes).

You are aware young footballers still play football matches right? And train as athletes?

They don't just sit at home playing PlayStation until they get called up to the senior team.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,906 ✭✭✭doc_17

Whatever way it works out for Dowman he will be incredibly rich, he is living his dream. Say they waited until he was 19 but he suffered some catastrophic injury and never broke through, what kind of life would he have then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,277 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

the main thing is max dowman has dedicated his life for a dream and it’s now coming true and he’s having fun

    The internet isn’t for everyone

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,075 ✭✭✭TheRona

Yeah, it's quite a weird view some people have. There are plenty of 'elite' youth footballers who are putting in the same work and effort as the likes of Dowman, but probably without the same backing of a top level medical/sports science team. Where you could have an argument is if he receives an injury caused by a bigger, stronger senior player, but I'd say the likelihood of an injury physically caused by another player is probably higher when playing against youths.

Of the 10 youngest players to ever play in the Premier League, half of them are legends of the game. Some may have suffered later in their career, but that's as much a function of the amount they have played, regardless of their age. I'm sure you could find some stat that says the more top level minutes any player plays, the higher their chance of an injury that has an affect on their career.

In any case, Arsenal seem to be looking after Dowman. Imagine being 16 and enjoying an achievement like he did last night. Amazing.

not sure was that in reply to me? Obviously young players play football. That’s why I pointed out that I was taking about senior exposure and senior training in that too… man-ball top tier senior professional training and games are just a higher physical strain than what regular u18 teens normally deal with, or perhaps should be exposed to, if we have their longevity in mind.
