What are the repurcussions for a bad performance for a ref in rugby? Or is it just it what it is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,996 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

The question was in relation to Chessum costing England two points from a conversion by not touching down closer to the posts, which "would" have led to a draw.

    Watching it back.

The "high" tackle is never, ever, ever a high tackle

    80.02 on the clock.

Chessum tackle at a ruck on Araudou. If that's a high tackle then there are 30 every game at rucks.

Was the second penalty also called for a high tackle? Am yet to see that one back yet.

I simply can't fathom why he changed the deliberate knock on call to just a knock on. Presumably got input from TMO or touch judge?

No, they’re all corrupt. It’s not hard to know what will be lying on his bed when he gets back to his hotel room tonight.

I mean do they have to explain what seems to be erroneous calls - penalty try and yellow card - has Ireland ever received a penalty try - i think i recall one v Japan when we ran up a huge score but a six nations i dont ever recall one even when penalty after penalty was chalked up.

I thought the ref said it wasn't deliberate so just knock on advantage. Which ran out. Haven't seen a replay so can't be certain.

Still waiting for evidence of a high tackle.

Which is a terrible call for one, and pretty terrible reffing to make the call that he's changing it in the middle of an attacking sequence. Should've waited til a ruck or just called advantage over and restarted with a scrum

We have about 1000 assylum seekers here from Georgia and witnessed a 6 nations deciding game littered with dubious calls that influenced the outcome 🧐 by a referee from err Georgia favouring a French tesm who has questioned the six nations concept.

Maybe it was deliberate but the ref called it a knock on. He then called advantage over and England kicked it. So he didn't change his call in the middle of an attacking sequence, just knock on advantage over. Like refs do dozens of times every match. Therefore why would he go back for a scrum?

Thought the TMO might have checked it after the try. Maybe he did.

He’a a very unlikeable player from a personality POV, but let’s just ignore O’M’s red card brain fart v Wales then (when he was considerably older than Pollock is now). 🤷‍♂️

Would have been one of the all time great 6N triumphs but I think in terms of the WC next year this could be the best thing to happen to a clearly top class side.

As an Irish supporter I thought England were outstanding. Nothing to play for but pride and integrity. Under the right coach they could win the world cup. This was the best 6 nations for the unpredictable. Non rugby fans love it due to the short window. France will not win a rugby cup due to their fragile edgeness like confidence between brilliance and collapse, which is only 10 bad minutes in a game

He said deliberate knock on (which it was), penalty advantage. Then changed it to just a knock on (seemingly on terrible advice from his AR or TMO) more or less as England were kicking ball away. It is the height of absurdity he didn't at least come back for the scrum but it was a clear penalty.

what an incredible super Sunday! The Irish game was very enjoyable but the French English game was sensational- what rugby drama, utterly captivating to the last minute. Although we could have snatched an unlikely win the ending sits well with me. This season was wild.

same. First time I’ve watched the six nations in years. That France England game was so exciting. I don’t feel hard done by as an Irish supporter. Great tournament.

He called the change about a microsecond before Fin Smith tried a kick through, clearly thinking he had penalty advantage. If he didn't think he had the advantage, there's no way he kicks that ball.

Also, as had been said a few times, it was quite clearly a deliberate knock on, so what on earth he was doing changing it, I've no idea. Did he get some belated info from TMO? I've never heard a TMO communicate in live play to say "nah mate that knock on was accidental".

I don't watch much rugby anymore, used to 20 years ago and would have posted in here a bit back then. I'll dip into this forum now and then whenever there's a big match on and every time I do it's the exact same, pages and pages of pissing and moaning about the referee.

Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

    29 tries scored yesterday. Incredible.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

I think not winning the championship this year will be better for Ireland in the long run. Ireland have progressed, expanded the squad with guys showing they are capable of holding their own at this level plus still have some top players to come back in. We still have room to improve and I think Farrell will have a clear vision of what he needs to do. We will remain somewhat under the radar and I think we are in a good place to build towards the WC.

France on the other hand, I'd question if they are in a good place right now. The win last night will paper over some cracks. They fell over the line and were helped hugely by poor decision making from the opposition and referee. They are still the same old France, no shortage of talented players but can't keep their shít together for long enough (as last night proves despite them winning). I also wouldn't buy the suggestion that they know how to win even when playing badly, last night they gave up the lead multiple times and the less said about how they got it back at the end the better.

From the tee, he was. Overall he wasn't. We don't currently have an excellent 10. I can see the current options being usurped after the WC by one of, Gabriel, Wood, Murphy or AN Other.

Three aspects of the UK France game jumped out at me , namely:-

    (1) the guy who scored one of the UK tries kind of slowed up and waved to the crowd while on his way. I think that he got the ball via intersecting a French pass. He had plenty of time to down the ball under the post- no French player was near him- but instead he downed the ball WELL to the left of the post . Did he lose focus which you can ill afford at this level. Or maybe the kicker likes the ball to be a ‘little ‘ to the left of the post

    (2) The ref gave advantage to UK at one point but as the ball was being rucked/mauled / passed between the Eng players he suddenly announced adv over after only the ‘proverbial few seconds’ . I felt that other adv given went on for much longer. Eng was in a scorable position at the time. I always assumed that an adv is over either when the ball is kicked or the opposition gets control of the ball

    (3) T there was max two minutes to go and play was , I think, between the Eng 10 and 20 yard line and there was an Eng scrum which it won. I said to myself that all Eng have to do is to retain possession and then kick to touch at the ‘appropriate time’ . BUT, BUT NO , the scrum half booted a high ball up the field which the Fr normally won and started to work the ball towards the Eng line and there was rest is history. The one thought I had at that time is for the Eng to make sure that no ‘ indiscretion ‘ occurred and that is exactly what DID NOT happen

While I agree that France have an underlying problem, I'd still rather be the back to back 6N winner…

don’t forget the pages and pages of posters 💩ing all over players or members of the coaching staff from the provinces they don’t support. 👍

Overall a very exciting competition and the final day and final game had everything. Hard to say France deserved it but then they put us to the sword and beat England which before the tournament most punters would have had a title contenders
