as debuts go that was an excellent outing for Murray.

would be very easy to be over exuberant and do something foolish but he contributed very well and that’s not even considering his very well taken try.

looking forward to seeing him move province in the next few years.

There's no big secret, he's just not a very good defender. Consistently misses tackles, shoots up and hits fresh air, has been for years now. Doesn't really pass or create in recent years. Once again, he had as many passes as the props today (3).

He's not lacking in effort but I'd love to see others get a chance to see what they can do as they might elevate things, I'm not sure he's our best option there

I thought the first grounding was on the line there. Italy will have a lot of regrets today

Yeah I don't see how that's enough to overturn on field decision tbh.

That's awful. There's no way you can say the ball wasn't on the line. Italy can feel very hard done by today by the ref

Mad he didn't go back and have another look at the angle where it shows the grounding.

I don't see how sliding in knee first isn't a penalty, hate seeing players do it.

Ya there was one angle where it looked clearly point of the ball on the line but he never looked at it a 2nd time

Not Sweet Caroline anyway. Joking aside they had Josh Navidi doing DJ and the place was rocking. Aside from that the music choices are way better in general.

I'd like to see other options at 13 too - Ringrose has not been as effective in attack over the last year or two as he has in the past. His defense hasn't been at his previous standards either, since Neinaber arrived, but I think you're fundamentally misreading how he defends. He's always shut down the opposition's attacking options and space first, with tackle success being less of a priority. And for years he was great at it. Sure, he might have missed the tackle, but he'd prevent a pass, force attackers into positions or lines that allowed our cover to smash them, or hed pressure the attacker into making a mistake. He's also been a great defensive organizer for us.

I do think his form has declined of late (coincidentally since Nienaber started coaching him?), he's not getting any younger, and had those few head knocks...we need to give some alternatives a chance, 13 isn't exactly an area of proven depth.

Brex did the same thing as Ringrose, shooting out of the line in the match against Wales. The difference was he made the tackle.

If I had a tail, it would be wagging… really looking forward to Le Crunch, now…

Not sure I'd agree, he totally fresh-aired his man today shooting out and didn't knock him off his stride, slipped off him another time. That's 2 of the 5 off the top of my head... I don't buy this line...

I will say he's as brave as anything and very good scramble defender in broken play.

He's still an option but I'd love to see others get a go and see where they're at

If that was given, you'd imagine the conversion would have been successful. If Ioaine hadn't been lazy about letting himself get pushed into touch for his disallowed try...that would have been another 12 - 14 points for Italy. And that was just from chances in the last 10 minutes..they absolutely had the opportunities to win that game, and they just blew it. They didn't show up for 50-60 minutes. Such a disappointment, after playing such great rugby for most of the tournament.

On the plus side, that's a really positive finish to the 6N for Wales, which can only be a good thing. Fair play to Tandy. Handed an absolute nightmare situation, and has done a great job moving the team in the right direction for the first time in a long time.

Yeah, puts a really sour note to Italy's otherwise very good tournament to be honest.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 9,462 ✭✭✭fitz

Yeah, I won't argue he hasn't started making some genuine missed tackles that don't contribute defensively. I just think the idea that he's always been a poor defender doesn't stack up. He's been a great defender for most of his career imo, but it's definitely something that's crept into his game that some of his shooting decisions in the 2 years have been...questionable.

But yeah, totally, we know what we have with him, and we've got Farrell as backup, but beyond that? I wouldn't want to be relying on Aki or Henshaw at 13 coming into a RWC, tbh. Would definitely like to see some depth tested there.

Moray must be related to Hyacinth Bucket.

Yeah, I'm kinda gutted for them. Even if they'd played well and lost, I think they're have gone away from this tournament with heads up. You'd have to think they'll be on a downer after that.

Even his miss was a respectable one. Nary a duck hook in sight. He also looked more in charge today.

I think they will give Osbourne a go at 13 once Keenan and Hanson return.

Hanson probably won’t be starting at 14 if Baloucoune can stay fit.

Doris and Beirne are two of the best players Ireland have ever produced. We're incredibly lucky to have them both be playing at the same time

Ireland had a complete performance - a solid scrum, good place-kicking and pacy wingers on top of everything else. I don’t know who won that first scrum despite the penalty against Fagerson and was full of foreboding when I saw Sheehan popping up - echoes of the Italy game - but we settled nicely. I’ve waited so long to see wingers with pace again on our team. As so often with Baloucoune I’m a little anxious, though. He’s more of a Bimmer than a Jeep. How is that arm?

great tournament for Ireland even if our start was brutal. Murray coming in and scoring was the cherry on top for seeing new players come step up to the level required. I’d fully expect us to be seriously hunting for a grand slam next year w France in Dublin. So good to see all our key players put in very good performances week on week.

Don’t know what to say about Townsend, Scotlands pack always have a question mark over them but they’ve been very competitive this tournament and their backline is good enough too. Top two inches and coaching hold them back. Fully expect the same thing to happen to them if Townsend stays on come World Cup time. There’s a team Razor could improve a lot.

I'm a little late with this - blame the alcohol - but I'm so f*ing proud of him. So many injury setbacks, plenty of holes in his game, so many posters writing him off as spent. Took his chance, showed he belongs and more. He always had it in him, he just didn't always have the chance to prove it. Refined his game, adapted a little but ultimately showed the international scene is where he belongs. Whatever happens Ulster this season as a team, the players we couldn't shut up about over the years have shown what they're capable of. Consider me one very happy, very one-eyed fan.

Been a long time since we've had a winger who can beat his man on the outside the way he does. Glad we're finally putting him in space and letting his talent shine

It also creates space inside and more depth in defence. We actually have a chance of hunting down an interception.
