I remember that game actually. Such a buzz around Mullingar that day and around the team that time . If I recall that would have been 95 we reached an Ulster final that year ... Glad we saw those times cos we won't see them.again

I was at that game as well, travelled there with a Roscommon man. It was in 2002.

This time last year Cavan defeated Roscommon. The trajectory for both sides has taken a different path since.

Not arguing whatsoever. Supporters are disillusioned and who can blame them.

My favourite game ever in Breffni was Cavan 3-13 vs Down 2-12 in 2004. What a game that was and it was our GDM coming on at HT that changed it. Spillane named it in his top three games that year.

The support back then compared to now, remember Cavan town being absolutely packed before and after that game and then the following game against Armagh was an all ticket affair, sold out and Clones full to the brim. Pierce McKenna gets sent off very harshly after a minute and we still could of won the game. That type of support is in the distant past, only Cavan game recently that had a decent crowd was against Tyrone at home and nice hot day but think that was only around 10,000. Back in those Down and Armagh games, 20 odd years ago it was double that and more.

Starting this year off strongly too, they just gave Down a bit of a tanking up in Newry.

Anyone able to post the team? No post from Cavan with it and Down only posted their own.

From the look of the tweets, two of the goals came from U16s, Jack Forde and Oliver Clarke. No mention of Jake Brady scoring so either he didn’t play or possibly has been moved out the pitch to midfield.

    Offaly predictions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 240 ✭✭etuzyuk

I think we'll win but nervous. Offaly have had a very poor campaign and took a few bad beatings. But defensively we're about as weak as they'll meet in this division so they will have opportunities to run up a decent score if they take their chances.

Likewise we'll have plenty of chances. But need to see an improvement on some of the stuff we've seen so far and if/when we do get on top we need to show a better killer instinct. Might actually be a good open game for the neutral but hope, from our end at least, we show a massive defensive improvement and keep them to a dozen scores or so.

Cavan with a few to spare.

Offaly inside forwards Harry Plunkett and Keith O'Neill have been scoring freely despite their losses. And they have strong direct runners like Jordan Hayes and Cormac Egan. So they are not without decent footballers. We could easily ship goals if we don't keep our defensive shape.

The stakes are high but we really should take them. We need these points.

The minors are in Breffni on Saturday. I’d have more interest in them than the seniors.

If we manage to defeat Offaly and stay in Division 2, it’ll be very like 2012 when we managed to stay in Division 3 affer a terrible league season.

How many players have we approaching 100 games - Ciaran Brady? Gerry Smith?

I remember that, They had to put me along the sideline as the stands where so full.

Flat and Stale is what Myles and Celt262 mentioned and there so right….If cavan are going to get results like what they did against louth at home it will only get worse.

My interest is at an all time low there is nothing to get excited about with this team.

The "Manager" has the run of Breffni park and there is no accountability to what he is doing with the development squads and now the Senior team.

We seem to have only one county standard midfielder who will proabably retire this year along with a raft of others.

Football is secondary within the county board with big developments and raffles more important that whats happening on the pitch along with trying to control the local media.

I can not recall our Senior's Manager speaking to the National Press after our recent heavy defeats to outline his thoughts on the teams poor performances . If Offaly give us a right beating on Sunday the County Board should ask for his resignation before he gets on the bus to go home. Use the Raffle money to pay him off.

Had to wait until the Celt printed it to get the starting minor team. How in gods name is the county board not getting stuff like this out?

The Ladies board in fairness to them have full images of their teams up for each game every weekend.

Another mess by the CB. It’d help if they actually promoted the teams and games instead of draws and fundraisers.

Totally agree, the games are marketed all wrong in the county. You'd be lucky to find some action photos published of games and never mind hoping to see some from club championships. The ladies have a great communicatuion officer doing a lovely template up for each matchday squad from u14 right up to senior, Camogie at the same. Its little things but they tip the scales hard when marketing games in the county.

Looks like they even stopped putting up the underage fixtures on the main Cavan website, leagues starting this weekend and nowhere to be seen on it. Going from bad to worse.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭Bduff1

Wow!! Some start this weekend? I did not even know that. I attend the games but would not know whats going on there, only you said I would have no idea!! Only ladies fixtures on website really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,721 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Is the ladies PRO now not the former men’s PRO Susan Brady? The U16s also beat Tyrone at the weekend the podcast said but I knew nothing about that. Didn’t see any mention online.

As you say, people wonder why people don’t engage with teams but there’s no promotion. Go to a county page on any social media and you’ll find tickets for sale quicker than you’ll find any result.

Ladies Pro is Bailieboro Shamrocks pro. Doing a great job. Was doing interviews with players last year after matches.

More than we can get out of our senior mens manager. Maybe the county board don’t want him talking or might want to threaten more local journalists. How in the name of god is he not obligated to talk to the media. And then they are wondering why no one is going.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭Bduff1

No I believe it is a member from bailieborough shamrocks, The fixtures are up now for underage this weekend…Maybe they are checking this forum(with a bit of luck)

No Carolan on panel tomorrow. Im actually not confident about this game. Youd have to imagine Offaly would target it as a means to get momentum going into championship.

No options off the bench is also worrying if we pick up any injuries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,721 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Different story for the minors this week unfortunately. We’ve a number of U16s playing and it shows - they are smaller and lighter. Tyrone are scoring at their ease a lot of the time.

Is it because of injury or what happened at end of last game?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 339 ✭✭ipitydafool

Wasn't at the game but was told to take it with a pinch of salt, they changed the team from last week including the goalkeeper and Jack Forde who had scored 1-2, didn't have their best player playing in Jake Brady either though maybe he had a knock. They should have too much for Fermanagh next game so probably know they through to a semi final regardless of result today, not nice getting a hiding in your own backyard but definitely won't be getting ahead of themselves.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,721 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

Brady I believe has a game with Granard school today. I think it’s a B All Ireland final.

Down trounced Fermanagh today so Cavan should definitely beat them.

The majority of the team was the same as last week. You’ve listed the only three changes - 12 starters the same by my count. Eccleston the keeper they tried today is Southern Gaels’ minor keeper.

Four of the five subs were definitely U16, the fifth may well have been too. Unfirtunately the year less of conditioning at this level normally shows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,231 ✭✭✭cavan4sam

How many Cavan lads are on that Granard side .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,721 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

3 starters and 2 subs going by this.

CNOC MHUIRE GRANARD: Eoin O’Hara (St Mary’s Granard); Caolain Madden (Gowna), Mel Mulligan (Abbeylara), Jacob Gaynor Brady (St Mary’s Granard); Karl O’Hara (Abbeylara, 1-1), Aaron Plunkett (Mullahoran, 1-0), Niall O’Donnell (St Mary’s Granard, 1-0); Dylan Ledwith (Abbeylara), Odhran Madden (Gowna, 0-3, two-pointer free, 1 free); Sean Fagan (Abbeylara), Liam Greene (Mostrim, captain), Daniel Corr (St Mary’s Granard, 0-1); Ben Blessington (St Mary’s Granard, 0-1), Cian O’Donnell (St Mary’s Granard, 0-3, 1 free), Brendan Martin Burns (St Mary’s Granard, 0-2).

Subs:- Jake Brady (Gowna) for M Mulligan (half-time); Kian Lynch (Mullahoran) for D Corr (47 mins); Padraig Cahill (Mostrim) for J Gaynor Brady (56 mins); Liam O’Hara (St Mary’s Granard) for K O’Hara (57 mins); James Dalton (Mullinalaghta St Columba’s) for B Martin Burns (stoppage time).

Spoke to someone this evening who said the minors went with what they felt was strongest available team.

They haven’t decided re ‘keeper yet, Jake Brady was with Cnoc Mhuire and Forde had a game with Pats yesterday.
