But if they destroy that area that’ll push up oil prices more which trump doesn’t want. Also the Iranians would have nothing to lose by then and mine the shite out of the entire area. It would be closed for months.

This is so simplistic. "Without Kharg Island the regime is pretty much dead" "it's game over."

If you take out their most important assets, they have less to lose and then it becomes harder to get them to stop. You cannot burn down a man's house and then expect him to stop attacking you because you threaten to torch his shed.

We should at least hold ourselves to higher standards of rhetoric than the White House.

If you read my post again, I said it's pretty much dead IF the US and Israel have destroyed their means of effective response.

It hinges on that if, and it is a big if.

Right yeah, huge if. I assume that Iran has kept some response capability unused in case the US attempted to land troops there.

Imo, America is basically bringing a version of 9/11 to Iran, where this first force will get massively attacked in some manner and that be the pretext for a much larger force with more public support.

It will be catastrophic if America destroys their oil / electricity etc. They will attack similar all around the gulf rendering the strait much less important until rebuilt.

Missile hits helipad at US embassy in Baghdad - report

A missile has hit a helipad inside America's embassy compound in Baghdad, according to two Iraqi officials cited by AP news agency.

The embassy has not commented but AP footage showed smoke rising over the facility, which has been repeatedly targeted by rockets and drones from Iran-aligned groups.

Reaction to Hegseth’s “no quarter” remark:

Former Army JAG here. No quarter orders are a violation of the law of war and Geneva conventions.

This is the same order reportedly given during the Caribbean boat strikes. @SecWar is establishing a pattern of issuing illegal orders .

I’ve trained hundreds of soldiers on the law of war — our service members have an obligation to follow that law.

Trump is in a poor position to escalate threats, for example about Kharg Island, given the drastic way he and Netanyahu started this war. The other side is in no mood to calmly analyze such moves at the moment. Just imagine how open to negotiation the US would be if a missile hit the Capitol during the SOTU address. Americans seem to have genuine difficulty picturing other countries in a similar light.

The island was bombed by Saddam Hussein in the Iran-Iraq war in 1986 but the regime survived. I think a lot depends on what China does. Russia is tied down in Ukraine but thanks to Trump can sell more of its oil at sky high prices, the highest in 4 years.

The element of surprise is ruined by the way Trump appears not to have anticipated how this conflict would play out. Everyone now knows he will try to seize the island. Such incompetence. And having to moving a likely amphibious force there after the war started shows he underestimated Iran. The constant hubris and bragging about how the Iranian military no longer exists. Russia said similar things about the Ukrainian military in the first week of the invasion of Ukraine. Trump finally admitted yesterday that Putin is "helping Iran a little bit".

Trump admitted not expecting Iran would target third countries, presumably meaning the Gulf Arab countries with US bases. Again this is failure to prepare. When a regime faces an existential threat, it pulls out all the stops.

What dark fleet, these ships can be seen loading at iranian ports and sailing out. Just look at the marine traffic app.

America's going to ruin the world to try and save face basically. There are no checks and balances, just a frathouse full of racists and Islamophobes.

I am so curious about where America will even put these two and a half thousand or five thousand troops. Like how does this start.

Looks like the decision has been made in Yemen as senior official Mohammed al- Bukhaiti says Yemen has decided to align militarily with Iran and will announce the start of major action at the right time.

US meeting with 17 asia pacific countries to tell them that US can supply them with oil - taking out china's oil supplier iran is all part of the plan

The Houthis, not the internationally recognised government.

Jeffrey Sachs saying that Iran is allowing Chinese and Indian ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

Absolutely. It was the same when Rubio claimed to a congressional committee that the abduction of Maduro was a “law enforcement operation ” not an act of war. Senator Rand Paul then asked him if a foreign power abducted Trump from the White House whether he would consider it an act of war.

Tasnim News Agency's Telegram channel have posted a list of companies facilities as targets and advised all employees to evacuate and people to stay away from those sites listed and surrounding area.

List is major technology firms including Qualcomm, Adobe, Dell Technologies, Intel, Apple, Cisco Systems, Palo Alto Networks, Oracle, Salesforce, Amazon (AWS), Microsoft, Google (Alphabet), and IBM in Dubai, Riyadh, Doha, Kuwait City, Manama, and locations in Oman.

A few tankers may be let through as long as payment is made in Yuan and not the USD.

Ruling by Truth Social posts is a really, really stupid idea. The prestige of America has really taken a beating under the Trump administrations.

when is India going to start feeling some heat for the way they carry on? They seem to be on the opposite side from most US interests, cozying up to Putin and clearly an ally of Iran. Meanwhile they are all over US tech companies and the big 4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,282 ✭✭✭✭walshb

of course they’re legitimate targets, but they are also human beings, with loved ones and family. Sent to war. You might be happy that Iran are having success, but being happy/excited at peoples deaths here is a bit much

    Edit. Didn’t see Necro’s post!

    Kharg has been hit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,689 ✭✭✭yagan

Well flip all was moving from that island this week, whereas there have been Chinese flagged tankers coming and going to Iran's ports east of the strait over the last two weeks.

According to the IEA there's been oil terminals since 2021.

I've no doubt Iran has Karg mined and boobytrapped for Donnie's very special forces to experience becoming astronauts.

India puts the interest of it's 1.5 billion people first as should every country. They have 800 million people whose lives are connected to argriculture in some way, so of course they need to secure oil, gas and fertilizer from wherever they can. It is essential for the whole country.

    It's as mad as Trump.

This old Onion satirical piece from 1999 about very special forces being deployed to Iraq is even funnier now.
