Every single year (regardless of American President) theres an opinion that's basically this: "Taoiseach X shouldn't visit President Y, because of topic Z"

It's beyond that. It always has been and (hopefully) always will be.

Ireland is in theory a neutral country. A regular, guaranteed, annual meeting with the president of the USA should not be thrown away due to the politics of that particular time.

    Can you recall the scandals of 1968, 1973, 1979, 1981, 1984, 1987, 1990,1996,2003, 2004, 2009, 2012 that meant the Taoiseach shouldn't have travelled over?

No, no, you can't. Because there was a Political argument on each occasion as to why he shouldn't travel. But in a historical sense, now when we look back, nobody knows why.

And again in 2026 there's people saying he shouldn't go. But 2026 will also be washed away and blurred into history. Yet, the unique opportunity to meet the president of the USA annually, won't be washed away.

To maintain it, we've to keep doing it. The role of a leader is to do what's best for a country. You can't base your decisions on the day to day social media posts or fickle criticisms that occur every single year. You're representing the Irish state, not yourself or your party.

I don't begrudge whatever leader, the chance to visit each year on behalf of the State. It's too easy a bone to pick. it's way more nuanced than that. You can't simply decide to not visit because someone's a turd.

Brexit wasn't that long ago. UK PM couldn't get an appointment to meet the prez. But we had Paddy's day booked in.

MM should do like the Swiss did and bring over 1Kg of gold (shamrock perhaps?) as a bribe present for the orange one.

I don't think the Taoiseach should be shaking hands with a paedophile, but that's just me.

Apparently, there are Iranian sleeper cells in America but the government probably knows where they are:

“A lot of people came in through Biden with his stupid open border,” Trump replied. “But we know where most of them are. We’ve got our eye on all of them, I think.”

Every press conference with Trump is a risk and the stakes are much higher in a war. If he gets a difficult question he just starts making things up.

Probably Russian sleeping cells too but noone has a clue where they are ,or how high up they are ,what with Biden and Harris letting one in around the time of the last election.

Actually I heard someone suggest some of those sleeping cells might be in the kindergartens...

1 of Iranian conditions for reopening the straits should be regime change in the US because they are also religious nutjobs less popular than we are among ours.

    latest utterage 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄

….. We have unparalleled firepower, unlimited ammunition, and plenty of time - Watch what happens to these deranged scumbags today. They’ve been killing innocent people all over the world for 47 years, and now I, as the 47th President of the United States of America, am killing them. What a great honor it is to do so!"

Yet again, Trump has to be told what a great man he is and accept another trinket

A presentation no less for his support of women in sports.

Putting aside his utterly ridiculous "who me? I had no idea!" attempts to look surprised, he joked about how he could grab any women by their ***** just because he was famous, was best friends with a paedophile and actively prevents details being released, wished that paedophile's accomplice well on at least two occasions, was found liable for sexual assault against women, commonly disparages women for their looks and berates female reporters, and has cheated on all of his wives. What a fantastic advocate for women eh?

I suppose it makes as much sense as him being awarded a peace award from FIFA and then bombing their contestants in the FIFA World Cup.

The absurdity of Trump is an obscenity to humanity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,246 ✭✭✭✭For Forks Sake

This is a country that spends a huge whack of it's budget on the military, won't countenance providing healthcare for it's population, and tries to block any attempt to provide assistance to it's most vulnerable, and yet somehow this is what it's getting for that spending. Christ.

There's nothing new about the fear of "sleeper cells", especially since 9/11 and previously the Cold War.

    https://www.naadsn.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/Nash_Iran-and-Sleepers-Quick-Impact-2.pdf

Discussion here from a Canadian body specifically in relation to Iranian threat in 2020, which very much talks down the threat.

If Trump wants to end war, and I think he does as a prolonged conflict will split his coalition, then downplaying threat now suits him.

What the actual current intelligence assessment is we won't know unless it suits the administration to leak it.

If the threat is real and something happens on USA soil it'll force his hand and there'll be boots on the ground. If that happens this war will be still rumbling on in 10 years time.

Iranian backed terrorism is much more likely in the gulf nations supporting USA.

It is an absolutely dreadful country in so many ways. And in an increasing number of ways. I wouldn't go there if you offered me an all expenses paid trip.

Trump reminds me of one of those mad Roman Emperors you see on films . Being fed grapes by young women and clapping when slaves are dragged by horses and quartered .,

He has that same mentality of feeling superior and extremely dangerous and surrounds himself with stupid and complicit legates and tribunes who cannot think for themselves .
Such people have no empathy , kindness, no compassion no respect for humanity. They use and abuse women , they feed young men into wars to die . They thrive on being adored and obeyed . He is dangerous and evil and revolting .

Nothing shocks about Trump because its all written in history what shocks me are the millions of Americans who didn’t see this coming .,

Once you realise Trump is a Russian asset it all makes sense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,663 ✭✭✭Patrick2010

I doubt the US intelligence service can produce much useful information given Russian asset Tulsi gutting the service last year and Patel firing key agents because they investigated Trump bringing classified documents to Florida. Putin must be delighted that his puppet Trump is obeying orders and now helping to fund Russias war in Ukraine by dropping sanctions. Trump isn't even criticising Putin for aiding Iran in targetting US bases. Can it be any more clear Trump is working for Russia.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c78mj2m85pno

US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard has announced plans to cut the agency's staff by almost 50% as she reorganises the office.

Announcing the cuts, Gabbard said the agency had become "bloated and inefficient" over the last two decades. Its annual budget will also be reduced by $700m, she said.

She said the "serious changes" would consolidate teams across the agency and ensure it was fulfilling its mission to "provide objective, unbiased, timely intelligence".

The announcement came hours after Gabbard said the Trump administration would revoke the security clearances for 37 current and former US officials.

Among other changes announced by Gabbard, the restructuring eliminates the Foreign Malign Influence Center, which monitors foreign efforts to influence the US public. A fact sheet said that function was already performed by other US intelligence units.

The fact sheet said Gabbard was also getting rid of units that track weapons of mass destruction and cyber threats, saying that work, too, was performed by another intelligence unit. Also going is a group that produced long-range forecasts of global trends.

It's not difficult to make him look stupid though he is playing cutesie on this one. I don't think Vance can put any sort of clear red water between himself and Trump's actions. He hasn't the personality to get away with it, for a start.

Yeah and there was a fire in the laundry room that injured two on the Gerald Ford. And the Abraham Lincoln retreated 500km on day one because it didn't get hit by anything.

    He thinks???

Listening to the news on RTE reading how, after the last U.S attack on Iran, the IRGC did a re-think of its defence policy and brought in a new format in case of an attack beheading the nations Govt. It included the splitting of the Guards control into twelve separate sections each with its own leader [like a hydra] so it could not be neutered if attacked.

The effect might be that the new head of Govt is powerless under the new format with control resting with the Guard, who control the Govt agencies. An expression of that may explain why Iran's UN ambassador statement on the freedom of use of the Strait conflicted with the new Ayatollah's statement on the Strait. The Ayatollah may be like Trump, a puppet with some-one else's hand inserted to control what he says and does.

Ha ha. This is slowly but surely turning into a nightmare for Trump. I don’t like the Iranian leadership but they are playing a blinder. How can Trump extricate himself from this mess if Iran refuses to play ball?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,726 ✭✭✭swiwi_

Just in from Trump off his X account “if only I was president the war in Iran would have never started. I’ll have it finished in 24 hrs”.
