Vw Golf models

I have a 21 Passat 2l diesel elegance model and am thinking of changing to the golf. I don’t need as big a car and want something with lower mileage, and automatic. I drive on average 700km a week, a lot on bad roads. The Passat is giving me on average 4.6l/100km and research tells me the golf will be similar.
Looking at getting a 2022-2024 2 litre diesel automatic with less than 20k on it if possible. I know the trims come in life, style and then r line. But on DoneDeal I’m seeing ones listed as Active advanced models and platinum turbo. I’ve checked brochures from the vw website and they don’t list them. Are they just other names for the life or style model? Is there much of a difference between the different models? The Passat elegance model I have has heated seats but not heated steering wheel…and I had a 16 Highline model before it which had heated steering wheel…makes no sense and really missed it during the winter.
Any tips or advice greatly appreciated.

Are these UK imports you are seeing as named differently?

The UK uses the same specification names as Ireland for the Mk8 Golf, with the addition of Match, which is equivalent to our Edition 75.
Active Advance is the Japanese equivalent of Life with a few extras.
Platinum sits above Style and R‑Line in terms of standard equipment.
On the irish pre‑facelift Mk8, the Style model with the Winter Pack includes a heated steering wheel and heated seats.

"Turbo" just refers to the fact it has a turbo

Excellent info…thanks so much. So the Actve advanced is between Life and Style. And it would be a Japanese import?

And the Platinum is above style and similar to R Line? Is the Platinum also Japanese?

Can’t trust chat gpt…For the Volkswagen Golf in Ireland, “Active Advanced” is a specific equipment level / trim variant that sits above the basic Active and below the main official trims (like Life, Style, R-Line) — often used on dealer spec sheets for the Golf Mk8 range. It means the car has extra equipment fitted compared with the standard Active version.

I had a look on the Japanese auctions and can only see Style and R Line. They come as TDI and eTSI

Looked at an active advanced and a platinum turbo during the week…they are jap imports. It was from a vw main dealer and they said the radio etc would all be coded over to English. Is there anything else I should be looking at if I go ahead? Also, am I wasting my time getting an r line model seeing as I’m driving bad roads a lot of the time? Would it be a bumby ride?

No there's nothing else to worry about regarding it being a Jap import. An R-Line isn't uncomfortable. They just have slightly larger wheels.

700km a week is serious mileage, so the 2.0 TDI is the only way to go.

Regarding those trims: 'Active' and 'Platinum' aren't official Irish specs. They are likely UK imports or dealer-inflated titles. Stick to the Style trim — it’s the closest to your Passat Elegance. Avoid the R-Line if you're on bad roads; the stiffer suspension and bigger alloys will feel like a massive step down in comfort

Ya I got a shock when viewing cars this week. Paid €27k for my Passat in summer 2025…6 months ago with 150k on the clock. Was the cheapest around at the time with that spec. Went to 2 different vw dealers this week and one is giving €17k and the other €18k on a trade in. I’ve 175k on it now but still thought I’d get €20-€22k.

Your car is a year older and has above average mileage. Your also trading it against a smaller car. Dealer still has to make their margin on the Golf and stick a warranty on it.

Dealers seem to now want at least 6 k margin on your trade in! Protection form price drop I know but still very greedy even for popular models they know they can flip quickly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,721 ✭✭✭✭User1998

Not greedy at all. €6,000 is gross profit. €1,250 goes straight to Revenue and then most trade ins need at least about €1,500 in prep to get them up to retail standards. Then you have staff wages, sales commission, overheads, corporation tax etc. So €6,000 quickly becomes €2,500 and after all that they still have to stand over the car for 3+ months and hope nothing goes wrong or reduce their profit even further and pay for an external warranty. And that's assuming they get their full asking price.

The cost of overheads, wages, repairs, etc etc have all increased massively in the past 5 years so the margin on trade ins has to increase as well unfortunately.

Have a golf picked out and hopefully getting it this weekend. It’s a Jap import, 2024 Style model. The radio has been coded over but have been told that the built in maps won’t work on dash but that doesn’t matter as I’ll be using Apple car play. Is there anything else I need to check on a Jap import before buying? I read somewhere that the tyres need to be changed as they don’t conform to EU standards or something like that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,721 ✭✭✭✭User1998

If it's from a dealer with an NCT then you probably don't need to worry about the tyres.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭highwall32

it’s from a dealer but not a VW main dealer. And it’s a 2024 so no NCT yet.

Yes. Also looking at a 2025 one. There’s a lot of 2 litre diesel automatic Jap imports around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭highwall32

Thank you. So if the tyres don’t have this mark does it just mean that they’re fine but wouldn’t pass the NCT?

Well some people like to say that your insurance would be null & void and that they are illegal etc etc but that's just scaremongering IMO.

What happens with vw warranty? I see Amcc have a 2024 Audi A8 tfsi, it's high spec but similar price to irish / uk one and there's no way it will hold its value as well

Back again. Heading to look at the car at the weekend. Just copped that the tyres are 18inch 225/40/18. Will these feel rough on bad roads. As mentioned earlier I drive a lot on **** Irish pothole regional roads! Is it reasonable to ask to change the wheels to 17s if I’m interested in the car? Should he be charging me more or should it result in a few pound off for me?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,721 ✭✭✭✭User1998

It depends what your already used to. I wouldn't expect any money off as its a bit of an unnecessary hassle for them. Probably better to just take it as is and fit smaller wheels in the future if needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59 ✭✭highwall32

Ya I get ya. My Passat has 255/55/17 that I’m driving at the moment and I find them ok? Will I find 18s “bumpier”. Also, might seem like a stupid question, but I assume if I change to 17s down the road, that I have to get whole new wheels, alloys etc….its not a case of just fitting a smaller tyre I assume!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,721 ✭✭✭✭User1998

Well if your changing from a Passat to a Golf your already "downgrading" in terms of road noise and comfort etc so the low profile tyres are definitely going to add to this.

You would need to change the entire wheel yes. But there's loads of VW wheels on DoneDeal etc if you really needed a set.
