What can be done about the dive for the Arsenal penalty when no action is taken on the pitch? I think players have been charged with bringing the game into disrepute in the past?

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 7,923 Mod ✭✭✭✭Irish Aris

It wasn't a dive. There was a replay from an angle behind the goal line that showed the contact - which looked accidental, to be honest.

Haven't been watching champions league a lot this season, is the threshold for penalties lower compared to PL? The penalty awarded to Bodo is routinely ignored in PL.

There's nothing I hate more in football than fans or pundits excusing diving, cheating and feigning injury because a tv slow mo shows the slightest bit of contact.

Madueke clearly dives. He knows exactly what he is doing. He has won the penalty after feeling the slightest touch from a sliding player. Madueke can stay on his feet if he wants to. There is nothing in the contact that trips him up. There isn't a large amount of force in the contact to bring him to the ground. The nature of Madueke's fall to the ground after the slight contact tells you everything. He decides to throw himself down in an almost comical fashion a step or 2 after the slight contact. It is a dive, it is cheating. It's ludicrous that anyone would dispute that even if you support the team involved.

Unfortunately in the football world, and especially in the football world with VAR involved, cheating is handsomely rewarded the past few years. Madueke isn't even the problem, he's a professional footballer who knows that if he cheats in that instance he will win a penalty. The game is absolutely rotten now, a complete mess. It's in a far worse state than it was before VAR was introduced and that's saying something.

Even so, if you're going to slide in off your feet and you touch the player but don't touch the ball, you're asking for trouble.

I'm actually surprised so much is being made of it.

It's much more controversial that Bayer didn't go down to 10 men after 5 minutes, but nobody seems to care about that.

Refs have created this though by never giving a penalty if you get kicked but stay on your feet. Happened with Rio Ngumoha earlier this season and everyone was saying why didn't he just go down it would have been a penalty

    Which is a ridiculous situation.

Vini Jr could have stayed on his feet last night too but leaves his leg back as the contact comes

It was definitely a penalty, but had he stumbled on to get the ball you know it would never be given

You literally have to fall down to win a foul in the box and then the discussion is whether the contact was enough that he had to fall or not

I'm not saying the Arsenal lad was fouled, I don't think he was, but in general that's how everybody plays

Even more interesting than all of it is City and Chelsea taking a bit of a thumping. Expected both games to be closer. Spurs was predictable on their current form.

Ordinarily I would fancy Liverpool to overcome Galatasaray especially with the return leg at Anfield (something about that place on European nights) but this season I'm not so sure. Their attack has been sanded down from what it was, everything is just a little...blunt.

Arsenal are the only team you would say are through with that last minute goal

Think the other 5 have a lot to do

Liverpool should join them but any of the other 4 would be a surprise for me

Ah lads wtf are we doing here? Brining the game into disrepute????? Its worse than twitter here at times.

Soft penalty no doubt but was never being overturned after being given

100% this… terrible non decision by the ref

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,586 ✭✭✭ronjo

Yeah, you would think Arsenal still have 75% chance of going through……. Pool over 50% but would be surprised if any of the others made it.

The answer is in your last paragraph: this is how the game is played now. As others said, if you are fouled in the box and stay up trying to finish your attempt, there is absolutely zero chance that a ref will bring it back to give a penalty or that VAR would intervene. So players are conditioned to go down at the slightest touch.

I can appreciate that many of us are of a certain age and remember a different kind of football, before the technology/Internet and whatnot, but that's dead and buried. This is how things are now, and we can take it or leave it.

I'd still give City a fairly good chance.

Real are very depleted with injuries, and had a couple more players pick up knocks last night too.

It's only a few seasons ago that City put 4 past Real in a CL Semi Final at the Etihad. Away from the Bernabeu, anything could happen. Surely City can't play as poorly as last night in the 2nd leg.

True, the penalty miss could be their Dembele moment (he missed a big chance to put Barcelona 4-0 against Liverpool)

3-0 is definitely doable, they just have to figure out how to feed Haaland and hope Madrid sit back

But I just don't see it this season compares to others. They don't feel as inevitable as they used to under Pep. And Madrid teams in worse shape than this have gotten to finals - it's just what they do at this time of year

You can be sure too if you dont go down after any contact you'll be a bollocking from the manager. It's not just players complicit in all this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,070 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Its a contact sport, a touch is allowed to happen.

The way football has changed is that ANY contact in the box excuses a penalty. Any. Thats not how it should be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,070 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I really think Madrid needed that 4th to give them some breathing space.

As we see last night, they always give up plenty of chances at the back. All it takes is for City to score early, perhaps even just one before half time. Then its game on again.

However, if Madrid are able to play like they did last night there is a chance they could score at least one next week too.

    A fascinating tie.

I think Chelsea are done. PsG will score next week. Too big a hill to climb.

I think Liverpool and Arsenal will definitely go through. Newcastle will go out heroically.

Surprise that of the 6 EPL clubs there was no wins this week.

Exactly it used to be a much more subjective the call was ref dependent. It used to be not if there was contact. But how much contact. Was it deliberate? Did it cause the player to fall?
It has gone so far the other way, it is amazing there is not more penalties given. The refs now basically side with the VAR takes the pressure off them.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Will Neto face any punishment for his tangle with the ball boy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,461 ✭✭✭jacool

He'll be banned from Swansea, for a start.

He gave the ball boy his jersey afterwards, and apologised.

I've noticed a trend for ball boys to act the boll** in lots of game recently. Obviously trained into that behaviour.

He looked a little more than a " boy" though.

More like a 15/16 year old.

The Premier League is so physicality oriented that I truly believe our top teams are struggling against teams in the CL that can play football.

Real Madrid are not great, make no mistake, and they schooled City.

Leverkusen are decent at home, but they popped it around Arsenal pretty easily at times.

Liverpool couldn't string three passes together.

Chelsea did ok, but were still beaten soundly in the end.

The Premier League is not all it's cracked up to be. And it's not just about Arsenal, even though many blame them somehow. Liverpool, when champions last season, were schooled by PSG over 2 legs. it's a trend that the PL has been moving towards, and I think it's really hurting them in the CL. Physicality can only get you so far, especially in the truly elite competition.

There was plenty of schooling done by Premier league teams to the likes of Real and Bayern pre Christmas.

I guess there is a case there are too many games in England or the physical nature is unsustainable over a full season.

That said, I guess we should wait and see how the rest of the season pans out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,461 ✭✭✭jacool

Arsneal will win the EPL. An English club will not win the CL, I'd say PSG or, more likely, Bayern for that trophy.

I can't see an English winner of the "lesser" European cups either - Lyon and Celje for those.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,878 ✭✭✭✭8-10

I think Liverpool's struggles in the PL could still help in the CL though for this reason

Liverpool had 2 glaring issues against Galatasaray: 1. as you said, not being able to string passes together, and 2. not being able to finish (Wirtz should have scored twice and Ekitike once)

These issues aren't down to their style of play, and Galatasaray weren't playing great football either. They managed 1 set piece goal despite Konaté and others being very sloppy. And they looked very shaky in defence.

But Liverpool showed against the likes of Frankfurt, Real Madrid, Atletico, Marseille that they can attack well when teams are less physical and more open.

Galatasaray gave them every opportunity the other night it was just down to some individual poor decision making in possession and all 3 big chances having poor finishes that led to losing the game

I don't think they lost because of their style, if anything that's what's hurting them in the PL taking so long to adapt

Not sure how you can make the statement with 100% certainty but odds are turned against an English club winning the Champions league for sure over last few days.

I spent quite a few weekends in Celje drinking their shite beer. Would love to see them win it.

I did the bracket on uefa.com and have them meeting Troy Parrott in the final.

They stuck in my mind after they beat Rovers, and manager had an attitude about him, that I disliked, but I could see that it would help them go far in the competition. Just saw they are the complete outsiders at 150/1, so that's me told !!!!
