Some rumor page threw up " byd thinking about F1"

While I doubt it happening soon can definitely see it. F1 focuses more on electric. Reputation gain and exposure as their growth is slowing against the competition.

For anyone who's ever been in one:

    “BYD F1, engage overtake mode"

“I’m sorry, I didn’t quite catch that. Did you mean: open the sunroof?”

“There is no sunroof! Overtake mode!”

“Setting cabin mood lighting to Ocean Blue”

Saudis fighting to keep the Jeddah race on the calendar. Not sure how that works given the flight disruptions.

Saudi don’t really care too much about public safely, let’s be clear.

The Saudi GP has always been a key piece of the sports whitewashing - huge eyes on the kingdom, at nighttime, without ever having to show a single local person, street, or town.

Of course they’re fighting for it to be kept

I think Formula E would be better for them. I still think its a pity that Neither HyundaI or KIA are in F1. Would love to see one of them in it.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

There is zero chance they can assure the safety of teams and spectators.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,192 ✭✭✭afatbollix

I'd say they will just sponsor a team, Like Toyota with Haas.

From what I am reading, this circuit shouldn't induce super clipping as much as we saw in Melbourne.

I still don't think the rules can remain as they are right now though, so perhaps we will see some change after this.

I do think Merc are out front, Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren will be closer together though.

The Race podcast yesterday said that both Saudi & Bahrain are 99.9% cancelled. So they're done, and won't be coming back this year. They also confirmed no replacement races - initially they thought about a double header in Japan but felt it would be unfair on the team staff who have been overseas for weeks, and there's no financial benefit in running a race in Europe to fill gap.

I’m struggling to listen to the F1 official podcasts discuss these new reg’s over the past few weekends - I’m a very positive F1 fan, but at least try to be balanced.

Generally I like Tom Clarkson, it’s pretty dyed in the wool, and I’ve tried to listen to that Naomi Schiff, Coulthard, Buxton one, but it’s just not for me.

Try the race. They're very balanced, and realistic about the new regs.

I'd recommend The Race also. Though I cannot listen to Scott Mitchell-Malm so tend to avoid the episodes he's on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,647 ✭✭✭sk8board

yeh I listen to them too - I just never really expected good lads like Tom Clarkson trying to paper over shortcomings so much - albeit I agree things will settle down over the next few races.

Right now there’s some stark divides in the 11 teams - 3 teams in F1, 5 in a tight midfield F1.5, and 3 adrift in F1.9

I can't believe how negative they're being. The drivers are whinging, But so what? It's good to watch. BBC were covering the "controversy" as if it was a genuine problem for the fans. F1 is exciting and not totally predictable at the moment, can't we ever just take the win?

I'll let you in on a secret: I'm not a driver, and neither are you. So I don't really mind if the drivers preferred the 70s or the 80s when there were 5 overtakes a race. This is good to watch as a fan.

Give me them five genuine overtakes from 70s -80s all day long.

Quote: F1 is exciting and not totally predictable at the moment. Ahh man come on. Russell top every session and only with a problem today he would of been pole for tomorrow aswell.

    It's terrible to watch!

Fake boost overtakes and the drivers aren't even attacking corners. It's the opposite of what F1 is supposed to be.

An overtake is supposed to take skill and daring, this is total rubbish

My hope is that the drivers will adapt and figure out ways to better use their own skills rather than just have the car decide what's best. Maybe the new 4 week break just added to calendar will help with this.

But 1.5 races in and it's a really bad start.

So far it's been like watching some people playing Mario Kart online, player gets a mushroom and surge forward before dying off.

F1 should be the pinnacle of racing, with teams and drivers pushing the limits but this is like a video game.

If Crofty reading this as he mentioned Mario Kart in coverage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭dmakc

I'm torn on it. They needed to make cars smaller and slower overall, but I don't like the idea of cars reducing speed on straights. That said, if you switched on the channel as an outsider you'd probably find this quite exciting going by what the TV director shows you - and that seems to be who it's geared towards. It's a shift in target audience from movie goers to TikTok reelers.

I don't like having the wool pulled over my eyes though. Crofty will have to drop the 2020's rare overtake excitement and start acknowledging these as procedural position swaps. If they manufacture Britain 2022 for every race, the spectacle wears thin fairly quickly. I've also noticed a big reduction in on-boards at China.

FIA never would, but I think this new system is geared towards short term chaos over enduring races. If they were drawing this year's formula into a new sport from scratch, the weekend would consist of 3/4 sprint races instead of one endurance race. Similar to how Q1, Q2 & Q3 all reset the tension.

FWIW I thought DRS was a patheticly overpowered feature that we were conditioned to accept over time, I suspect it'll be the same here. I don't really have an alternative for overtakes TBH. That's what they want, but the nature of qualifying filters the car on pace to begin with.

Like all F1 fans I enjoy overtaking more than any other aspect. However, as others have alluded to the overtakes have to be “real”. It is not exciting for me to watch one car overtake another using an electric boost as the other car super clips. This is a fake overtake. For me it is comparable to an F1 car overtake a family saloon.

I think that F1 has lost its way completely.

My preference would be for the drivers to drive flat out right in the edge for lap after lap without lifting at all.

I didn’t even bother watching the race this am which is completely out of character for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,647 ✭✭✭sk8board

this was a half decent race to watch, reminded me almost of the 90’s with the awful starts from some cars (verstappen once again), and the mechanical DNFs, we lost almost 1/3 of the field.

the TV direction is totally different this year, they don’t show any clipping, or in-car footage from the end of the straights. Loads of high angle trackside camera and heli/drones.

Only one race in the 7 weeks until May 1st.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,080 ✭✭✭TheRona

You can still watch the on-boards for the drivers, though. The super clipping wasn't all that bad this race. Nothing like what seemed to be happening in Australia.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,933 ✭✭✭Appletart Upsetter

Overtakes are happening all over the track now, which is cool. Previously, the DRS overtakes were pretty formulaic at times.

I still want the drivers pushing as hard as possible through the most challenging corners, it'll be interesting to see how they go at Suzuka.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 347 ✭✭SimpleDimple

Can someone explain the over clipping thing to me? What are we referring to there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,080 ✭✭✭TheRona

Essentially when the battery runs out on a long straight and the car slows before the end of the straight, even with full throttle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75 ✭✭Forza_Monza

While the " Overtaking " seems great, alot of them are simply a yoyo effect which is meaningless.

Saying that, i do prefer this type of racing over DRS overtaking

Super clipping, it’s another way of charging the battery basically (as opposed to charging when breaking or while doing lift and coast). So when the driver is still at full throttle, some of the power from the engine is used to charge the battery rather than being sent to the rear wheels.
