Simple NCT test question

In order for the Prioity List system to work for us, do we need to have already booked some slot or other? Or do we maybe have to have nothing booked?

I'm also not sure what happens re payment(s)/possible refunds around all that, but there's no rush to clarify that. I expect the Priority list team will come up with some earlier appointment (and am sure the financial stuff will be fair). With a lot of other things on my mind, I overlooked my NCT expiry, which is this Thursday. I only realised last Tuesday, when got a motor tax reminder email, and happened to scroll down it. I immediately went to the booking page of my usual test centre (the only one I have the time to reach at all easily), found the first available slot was the 25th (March), bagged that, and requested a place in the Priority List (which was confirmed the next day). I thought I remembered payment for NCT being taken from our cards only when we've arrived at the centre, but last Friday's booking confirmation email for the 25th tells me to make my payment in advance via the link provided.

I find the official info a lot clearer than it used to be, but still manage to run up against little ambiguities! (And speaking of those, one thing I just will not do is risk driving uninsured, despite the difficulties of going anywhere from here without driving.

No, you don't need to book a slot to get on the priority list. They will text you when a slot comes up that fits the criteria you set, and you then go into the link they send to accept and pay for the appointment.

I put 2 of my cars on the Priority list on February 6th last, and one of the cars was tested on Sunday, and the other is being tested on Wednesday. I never picked any slots as the earliest I could get was June/July…

Thank you for that (I've added it to my notes for next year!). Our mobile reception here isn't up to MMS, or any data whatever, (just calls and old-school SMS), so if it's a shortcode link in the text, I'll have to ask them for the complete URL, to copy into a browser (unless I get it by Thursday, so can drive to town for a decent signal!). But I'll just see how it goes.

Meanwhile, I started a query via the NCT's Facebook page, including how to find the page on which to keep checking for cancellations, as we're advised to do (can't find that in their FAQs). They haven't answered that yet, but they did promptly have a look themselves, and couldn't yet see any earlier slots than I'd been shown, but said they'd carry on checking for me.

I'm now confused about whether the Facebook reps are anything to do with the priority list people, or simply try to help people who may be unused to IT stuff (a category I'm certainly not in!).

Or just check the site around midnight and slots become available did it that way last few years had a booking in 2 days.
