I did some googling, there is nowhere obvious to park. It's really just a pier and slipway at the end of a lane.

Kieran made a comment about the moss and algae on the slipway. Has anyone ever been on a slipway that was clear of algae? I don't think I have.

And while we are making fun of Ray and his 12 subscribers, I have to ask why am I listening to this?

I'm giving it 5 more minutes and switching it off. Obviously I am very sorry for her loss, but it was only 3 weeks ago, it's still very raw. I'd argue it's too soon to be talking on the radio about it.

Ah now, surely there is a road to it that he could have parked and walked the rest of the way. Driving onto a pier just shouldnt be done.

In this day and age of horsing in as much home heating oil as you can, weddings in Bali in amongst month long trips to de udder side of de world and celebrating roundabout trips back home - de days of worrying about de green agenda are over !

    Up yours Greta !

As a great man put it - "Oh, so Mother Nature needs a favor?! Well, maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys. Nature started the fight for survival, and now she wants to quit because she's losing. Well, I say hard cheese"

People would park along the sea wall and then turn by the pier as it would be too narrow to turn where you would park.

He probably did that thousands of times and just lost his bearings and went too close to the slipway and lost traction.

For a country lad, he should know there is nothing safe algae will not grow on. It has to have chemicals (copper etc) impregnated into it or be as slippy as teflon. Neither or which will last longer than a year.

Nevermind cleaning of piers, as you said, just, don't drive onto one. Look at the pictures yourself, there's not even room to park on it. I wonder did he park on the road, and then used the pier to turn.

Everyone knows if the council cleans the piers

It'll be claim after claim after claim

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,274 ✭✭✭Deeec

Yeah the poor man made a mistake and lost his life by the sounds of it. It may not even have been the piers fault - could have just put the foot on the accelerator accidently. But I do feel people are crazy driving onto piers - there have been numerous similar accidents around the country. Why anyone would go near one with a car is beyond me. A lesson aswell is not to use a pier as a social meet up place.

Anyway may this poor man rest in peace and condolences to his family.

    tragic accident,

However are the council expected to make weekly visits to every pier to remove algae?
it’s just not possible nor practical

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,324 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

They keep referring to the pier, there's not much of a pier there it is a slipway. So taking a car without a boat attached to it, near a slipway is a very bad idea.

I was out on the 18th of February, it was a cold night, at 8pm it was pitch dark. A strange place for a social meeting. I know the daughter said in that area they dont have a pub or a cafe, but surely the men could meet in one of their houses.

No-one is blaming the banning of the shibins.

    We were on Slovinian Liveline

    Fairly remarkable story however

Do we have a change of topic coming?

    edit: NO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,324 ✭✭✭✭LambshankRedemption

"A slippery surface on a slipway".

It's called a slip-way. The clue is kind of in the name.

If the council cleared all the algae off a slipway, half of it would be back in a week or two. It's really not practical for every slipway to get cleaned every two weeks. Especially when theres about a 100 in Galway alone.

A water safety awareness campaign. How about don't drive on a slipway at hightide in February?

It's 2:54, Kieran might insert a new topic in in that time.

Edit: No, only time to squeeze in an ad break.

I thought we were goin to get a Ronnie Delany memorial show, a la Duffy. Poor Ronnie was not mentioned at all. Patricia Monahan must have directed dancing with the patreons of RTE Canteen takes precedence and is of national importance.

I’ll be giving it a miss Dub.

RTE can't be giving free obituaries, even RIP.ie now charge €100 for the privilege. RTE are operating on a shoestring budget these, though you wouldn't know it at times, like I salary paid to Kieran.

They need to promote one of the few things they produce themselves, Dancing with the Nobodies. Never watched that $h1t€, never will.

Did any of ye see the new format Lotto draw last night? Another example of their cutting budgets and outsourcing. The National Lottery now produce it themselves. It was pitiful.
