Cannot really understand why so many get upset about Scholes recent comments.

We were beaten by a weakened Newcastle team with 10 men so only to be expected criticism was well merited.

On top of that it was after a few fairly poor performances , despite some good results so to question Carrick seems fair .

Tonali did put in a good performance and did look good against 2 midfielders who have no legs but I’m sure Guimares would have done the same.

We have huge problems at full backs and midfielders and that’s where we need to spend big.

Because an influential ex-player, with a large following, is sticking the boot in as soon as he got the chance to.
If it was Mark Goldbridge people would call him out for being a p**** too.

It's the same shite every year, not a peep until we lose then he comes out with that! The club is riddled with negativity due to these clowns.

Am I the only one who thought Scholes quote was supposed to be a compliment?

"Michael has definitely got something special about him, [because] United have been crap last four games... night,"

As in, United have been crap but he won all those games so Carrick must have something special about him.

Either way, put me in the column of people who think its a complete non-story, who gives a **** what pundits say or don't say.

No, he was being sarcastic. It’s a dig at Carrick specifically.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,397 ✭✭✭✭bucketybuck

For it to be sarcastic there first had to be people saying Carrick had something special about him, and I thought the general narrative was far, far more cautious than that.

Maybe it was a dig, I don't know, but it can be read either way. I just thought it made its relevance even less important.

You are missing the point I am making.

People seem more offended by what Scholes has to say rather than the real problem of probably one of our worst defeats this season and unfortunately it was a culmination of a few poor performances.

Hopefully Carrick can get a bit of fire back in the squad for the small number of games left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,199 ✭✭✭✭FourFourRED

I kind of agree but here is the likely scenario… Scholes, possibly a few beers in, isn’t thinking about what the general narrative is. He would have known that Carrick had (rightly) been getting praise for the first two performances and for winning games. He seems to be bothered by Carrick for some reason and goes and publicly posts that. Deletes it in the morning.

Can be read either way if you want to, but it’s far less likely that he is giving Carrick a compliment.

And it probably is being talked about too much - that’s what happens when United don’t have games for a week or two. Why it’s relevant though, isn’t that he’s saying the performances have been bad (because that’s not controversial at all) it’s because he’s having a kick at the interim manager who is his former teammate, and it’s uncalled for and a little bit weird.

    -

Just seen a clip where he’s come out pretty much saying what you’re getting at. I think it’s bollocks personally and he’s clearly backtracking. Not many will buy it. My word though, the guy is everywhere.

Scholes can say what he wants like everyone else,he was quoted all over the place when he stuck the boot into Amorim.…if you agreed or shared his quotes back then dont be crying about them now!

The fact it was posted about 12am i'd reckon the beers were in full flow before it, hence the delete of the post.

Im probably the biggest criminal here for doing the same.

Its being made more of a big deal than it is. New episode out tomorrow so let's see if he talks about it.

The Carrick dig wasn't the worst for me, it was the mocking of Licha Martinez and then doubling down when called out on it.

The Liverpool players from their 70s/80s heyday were just as scathing about the teams of the 90s/2000s, but we didn't have social media and wall to wall coverage so it didn't have the same impact as today.

Uniteds a goldfish bowl and always will be. Scoles, Butt, Neville et all are entitled to their opinions and if Carrick wants the job permanently he'll have to brush it off. The pressure is never going to be off him.

Scholes never was any good at putting in a tackle on someone

I know a few on here and reddit noticed the similarities.

Speaking of the academy someone posted a video online of the young keepers passing ability and he's not one bit shy confidence wise in his ball playing abilities. Picking out passes that senior players wouldn't attempt

See they recently also came out saying United signed Marcos Rojo because Van Gaals grandson told him about this player from Argentina who was good on FIFA so Van Gaal signed him.

Reading the last couple of pages here you'd know we didnt have a game at the weekend.

Scholes thing is a storm in a tea cup but if you regularly listen to his pod with Butty and Paddy you should really get down to your GP for a mental health check. Pure rubbish!

Noticed that from the Forest game, bit on the small side I think but could still grow.

Remember we were heavily linked with Muani for big money a summer or two ago.

    He's fair bad

    Tottenham eh!

Makes it worse knowing we lost against them in the EL final.

"Highlight" of his career was the WC final miss.

Lewis Hall with a brilliant performance versus Barca. Would take him at United in a heartbeat

Newcastle have this weird one sided "rivalry" with Utd that probably makes it near impossible to do any good business.

Hall and Tonali would be great if we could work it but the money it would take wouldn't be worth it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,577 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Newcastle sent out a fairly strong signal last summer, can't imagine either are realistic targets for us as they'll demand huge huge money.

tonali will have 2 years left in the summer. chances are newcastle dont get europe so will need to sell.

so there could be scope with tonali. also not just newcastle needing to sell. some of these players may want out - some reports that tonali wants to go back to italy, which i just cant buy cos its a massive step down vs PL (wages included also).

but selling livermento to city (for example) for 50m may satisfy their FFP obligations.

hall and tonali would be massive though.

martinez injury more serious than expected, the running theme with our injuries this season.

with him, de ligt and maguire (if he stays for another year) all injury risks, think we need to add CB to wishlist for summer.

Lisandro Martinez is expected to MISS United’s game against Villa after taking longer than initially hoped to recover from a calf strain.

Sources insist the problem isn’t too SERIOUS, but he suffered a slight reaction in training and it was decided to take a more cautious approach with his recovery. #MUFC [

robbed from twitter, but i agree about availability.

Harsh truth: Manchester United cannot carry injury passengers anymore.

Talent is useless if the manager can’t actually use you.

Next season we’re competing for 4 trophies. Availability matters just as much as ability.

    Look at this:

    Matthijs De Ligt
    Last seen: 30 Nov 2025
Lower back injury. Initially reported as a 2-week absence.
It’s now months later and he’s still nowhere to be seen.

    Lisandro Martínez
    Last seen: 10 Feb 2026
Rumored minor knock. Supposed to be less than a week out.
    It’s been over a month.

    Mason Mount
    Last seen: 2 Feb 2026
At this point he has replaced Anthony Martial in the sick room hall of fame.
Gets fit, plays 1–2 games, disappears for another month.
    The cycle repeats.

Listen, I rate all three of them. Their talent is not the problem.

But football at the highest level is brutal:

If you’re not available, you’re not reliable.

United cannot keep building squads around players who spend half the season in recovery.

Sell them. Replace them with players who can actually stay on the pitch.

It would hurt, but this problem has to be solved.

Availability is a skill. If you don’t think so then refer to Diogo Dalot.
