France and Scotland are on equal points with France on a way better scoring difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭almostover

Sorry you're correct, I had forgotten that France got the try BP in Saturday's game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,500 ✭✭✭almostover

Wales also more or less have the wooden spoon too, even if they beat Italy with a 4 try BP they have to overcome a 100pt differential on England. A boy can dream I suppose!

Anyone else think that Scotland letting in 40 pts at home (despite playing brilliantly at times) is symptomatic of their perennial flaws?

I mean, they lost the chance to control their own destiny with respect to winning the Championship. It was really sloppy, but they were also likely knackered.

All fair points. And it should be reassuring to some degree.

Undoubtedly we've a great track record against them. Still I hate to say it but … "I have a bad feeling about this one".. They just put 50 points on France. We seemed to have reverted back to utterly mediocre form against Wales. We have continuing issues with certain areas of our game we all know about.

I've heard people say "If we can play like we did against England .." etc. Again I think people are reading too much into the England game. Enjoyable, flattering but not a realistic read on where we are as a team. We thumped a team in crisis who just lost to Italy. Thats no disrespect to Italy, they were the better team on the day.

I'm not saying we'll lose, far from it - if we're able to play well and at home, its a very hard day for any opposition. Good luck with that. I just have concerns about where we are in relation to what we can put together against a very good Scottish side. I mean based on what I've seen in this 6N.

If Wales can push us the way they did then what will they (Scotland) do?

Did anybody foresee Scotland doing so well this year? What’s it down to? It’s been a great tournament for neutrals. More than usual, tactical kicking seemed to play a big role in results. France could do no wrong against us in that department but had less luck against Scotland. Of course, Scotland played excellently as well. Huw Jones is flying these days.

I suppose a counter point is that we out performed them against Italy and Wales. I don't think we were as terrible against France as the scoreboard implied. France got every bounce of the ball vs us whereas that luck deserted them against Scotland.

They're better at 10, their centre combination is better, and at FB. Our pack is solidly better, outside of the front row.

Their scrum is better. Our scrum is a complete shambles at the moment. There's too many areas where their players are either on a par or better than ours.

Look at this objectively: We cant rely on our scrum when they have the ball. We cant assume even slightly tricky conversions are going to get scored or any sort of difficult kicks scored. Could that all change in the next game? Yeah maybe I guess but based on form there's trouble there. Thats no disrespect to Crowley, its cold hard facts based on the last few games and i'd still have him any day over Prendergast. But In the context of our players v theirs, Russell wins that arm wrestle all day.

Scrum halfs - Based on last few games, they're ahead there too, just slightly. JGP was electric vs a very poor England side, not great against Wales. Ben White managed to outplay Dupont. That says it all.

My point is there are too many red flags to ignore and think ah sure we're at home and sure we've a great record of beating them previously, it'll be grand. I think we'll have to play error free rugby and put out a better scrum and Crowley kick well to beat them and right now that seems like a tough ask within a one week turnaround.

It wont be anything like a comfortable win. No chance. Unless obviously they have a stinker of a game. But then so could we..

He's been one of those players who, over the years, got away with absolute murder and was never reffed the way other players were. McCaw was another prime example. Dupont at times gets away with things that other players don't. Pollock is another one who refs turn a blind eye to - particularly getting back up after he's tackled or flying head first into rucks.

It would probably be fair to throw Caelan Doris into that list too of players who seem to get away with stuff a bit more because refs seem to like him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,731 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

I think refs have clamped down a bit on Doris' brand of cheating, like leaning over the breakdown, swinging legs around the side, "taking the space", lightly nudging the 9, etc. etc.

McCaw disputes that. I remember him telling a yarn about a match vs Australian where at one point the ref yelled "Black 7 hands away!!" And McCaw wasn't even in the ruck. He was standing the defensive line next to the ref 😂

no rhyme nor reason to Borthwicks selections throughout this championship

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,663 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Nothing in that selection suggests any kind of change in style either - it's a really big pack, with Chessum at 6, and Guy Pepper at 7. I had seen rumours they might bring in some guys like George Furbank or Henry Slade to try and play a more expansive game, but that isn't the case.

It's been a hugely unpredictable championship, but it's hard not to see France putting a big score on that team.

Did Ollie Lawrence get injured? Thought he was one of their better players in attack against us.

Elliot Daly has been a consistent player with a good boot but he was badly shown up twice by Menoncello in the Italy game. The Italian easily ran round him for a try and then through him while setting up a second one. Freeman has been a disappointment too. He’s not sparkling at 13.

    4 week ban for Jegou

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 33,049 Mod ✭✭✭✭Podge_irl

To be fair to him, menoncello is one of the best centres in the world at this point.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,681 ✭✭✭A2LUE42

Can't understand how the TMO missed it during the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,681 ✭✭✭A2LUE42

Also, Freddy Douglas coming on for Syeyn with 13 minutes to go, was before France scored the points to get themselves the bonus point for trys scored. I know the Scots were tired and the game was won, but being unbalanced in the backline contributed to how easily France were able to get those 21 points on the scoreboard.

Oscar Jégou gets a 4 week ban for gouging

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,073 ✭✭✭typhoony

Aki and Hansen got the same ban for verbally having a go at a referee, when was GBH the same as a few nasty words

    Very lenient

Haven't read the official judgement but I'm assuming it was for something like fingers around the eye area as opposed to gouging. And he probably has no previous, apologized, wore a nice suit and promised to go No Fingers in the Eyes school.
