If Liverpool get past Galatasary then they could have to beat the same 3 teams to win both the CL and FA Cup. In the CL Chelsea QF, City SF and Arsenal final. That is very possible

Arsenal getting some seriously easy cup ties

    They could do it all

Horrible draw for us as expected

I guarantee you City won't be relishing the thought of playing us.

    Blah.

I told my son Arsenal would get Southampton, City would get Port Vale, we'd get Chelsea and Leeds vs West Ham / Brentford.

It felt that predictable they probably put us and City together to prove its random.

This is the risk you take when your league form is sl bad you are heavily relying on on the luck of the draw for cup compa.

City away and Gala away. Christ.

We need a proper Inter away performance tomorrow.

Just a reminder lads that tomorrow's match kicks off at 5:45pm.

Just in case you're like me and didn't even consider a different kick off time, I just noticed by pure chance.

City have such a tough run of games coming up, the FA cup may be one of the few opportunities they may get to rotate and play a weaker team which they probably won't pass up.

It's the first game back after the international break, so doubt Pep will be resting too many and would only love heaping more misery on us, they could effectively end our season, if results in the league don't go well in the next few weeks

Ah right, missed that, although if they do have the champions league the next week it could still be an opportunity for some rotation, but then again so may we.

Kelleher fails to save any in shootout

WH's penalties were all perfection in fairness

    Worst possible draw really

    City's record at Home

Not a lot to work with, under Klopp we'd love this challenge though. Slot can play a tight game when he wants, play for the pens .

I thought we were playing on Wednesday night and just assumed it was 8 so thanks for that

I really hate these 5.45pm kick offs.

Yeah, I'd never be home in time if I was in the office as planned. Luck-cough-ily I've cough developed a cough bit of a cough

Guess it makes sense with Gala though, it's 20:45 local time

Yeah some of our fans didn't get back to their accommodation until 3am in the last match there, police kept them in the stadium until after 1am

I love them, i work early in the morning and can have a rake of pints during the early kick offs

Wirtz, Frimpong and Mamar round table.

Haven't watched it myself yet so no idea if it's any good. 15mins

Ooof Wirtz and Frimpong talking about how they both got interest at the same time so they started talking together in the Leverkusen dressing room about what it would be like to go to Liverpool together

Really shows the intelligence of our recruiting team. Wirtz seems shy and quiet as a person so moving for the first time away from the area where he grew up would have been a big deal - especially to a whole other country when there were offers from Munich.

So to basically set it up that you could take a friend with you was a masterclass. I'm not saying Frimpong isn't a player we would have wanted anyway - we needed a RB and he was available at a good price and is Homegrown for squad purposes. But everything seemed to be set up at the right time and played perfectly - they said in the interview here that they both learned on the same day that Liverpool were interested in the other player. That's not an accident.

Watching this I could definitely believe that without Frimpong being part of the overall strategy we would have lost out on Wirtz to Bayern

According to Gemini, "OKDiario is generally considered a low-reliability source for football rumours, often cited for its sensationalist and speculative reporting"

So I'm not buying it. Not saying it won't happen in the summer, but I doubt this is true now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,611 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

That's all well and good for this particular situation, but, you can't be signing a "friend" with every signing, also signing Frimpong might have meant we missed out on someone else more suitable for RB or in another position.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,878 ✭✭✭✭8-10

No of course but I'm saying it lined up nicely that the opportunity presented itself. Same as us drawing them at home that season and giving Leverkusen team free reign of the AXA Training ground - we don't do that for every club! And the fact they were interested in Quansah too

I think everything lined up nicely to allow us to move for one of the hottest talents around, and the team played it incredibly well. This video just gave some nice insights into it

Reminds me how any club who wanted to sign Ibrahimovic would need to buy Maxwell too 😂

Ha ha, I hadn't heard that about us inviting Leverkusen to the training centre the day after we played them. Really subtle 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,600 ✭✭✭IncognitoMan

That's not how a well maintained squad works, no.
If you have high turnover season after season it is because you are poorly planning your squad.

2/3 changes per summer is normal due to age and refreshing the squad etc..
Utd need a LOT more than 2/3 changes.

If Liverpool added 2/3 to their squad they would (should) have enough to challenge again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,611 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

Forgot Quansah was part of this deal, although done separately, letting him go was a poor enough decision as we could have done with him in the first half of the season when Konate was totally inept, and we had no one to rotate with him. Overall I wouldn't really be singing the praises of these deals with Leverkusen yet, still a long way to go before we can say it was a success from our side, Leverkusen certainly did well out it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,878 ✭✭✭✭8-10

Slot made up his mind really quickly with Quansah. Not his fault his replacement got a season ending injury on his debut.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,611 ✭✭✭Girly Gal

I just wouldn't be singing the praises of our recruitment team, they used nearly half a billion on new players, to end up with a substanially weaker squad, and yes, I know we got about 300 million in, but, a nett spend of around 200 Million to have a weaker squad is not to be praised.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,025 ✭✭✭Bacchus

I've posted before about the transfers in vs out last Summer, and by in large we upgraded (and fans fairly unanimously concurred) the squad. Where the club failed in managing the squad was…

    1. Inadequate CB cover. Yes Guehi was all but signed so they get a little slack for that, but no moves in January??

    2. Inadequate progression of reserves/youth talent. That's not something they messed up last Summer during their £200m spend. That's been coming a while, and amplified under Slot. The club doesn't seem to have a depth of upcoming talent or reserve players capable of stepping up to help rotate the 1st team.
