Soap or Shower gel?

I'm a doap in the shower fan. In the past couole of years, I find it hard to find soap in Ireland. Shiel is no longer sold in Ireland, that I know of. I get mine when I visit the UK. Imperial Leather isnt sold by many retailers anymore. I stock up when I see it appear in Mr Price. The supermarkets, chemists seems to only stock Palmolive green label and Dove blue bar. Thats it.

In the US and Asia they have a full supermarket aisle just for soap. I also stock up when I visit the US, they have lovely fresh smelling soaps. I remember going to the US 25 years ago and shower gel was rare, and deoderant was in stick format only, no spray cans. They sell some spray cans & shower gel now I notice but soap seems to be the choice for most americans.

Whats your preference? Soap or showergel?

And would you like to see a wider range if soap available in Ireland ?

Good question. Nah I am an old soap man as it is more cost effective and enviormentally packaged than shower gel. I would love to be able to have the facilities to make my own soap.

Soap, usually dove or a those fancy ones in the huge block you get in nice gifty shops

With shower gel more is ended up being used than is needed and so an unnecessary amount of plastic is being used and disposed of

I also Just think soap feels like it leaves you cleaner

I hate how soap leaves my skin feel; perhaps I'm buying the wrong type. Dove is OK, but I prefer shower gel overall.

Anyone know of more environmentally packing for shower gel?

I think actually Dove market themselves as soap free

Neither. I'm a gasoline and gravel man.

Yes, gift shops are a good place to buy soap. You can also get it in health shops as well as eco / zero waste shops. My local health shop has a good range.

You're so right about the packaging. It's crazy that most people aren't more concerned about these things.

I switched to soap before Christmas and I'm a fan.

Buying from The Black Stuff, their deodorants too. Supposedly all handmade, and natural, to whatever benefit that is.

Feels nice, they smell nice, packaging is really basic, and there's some fun branding around limited editions etc

Etsy is an option for buying homemade soaps. They can smell amazing; very different from commercial soaps.

You should be able to get it in a zero waste shop. You bring your own bottle and they will dispense it in from a large container.

Great idea! I don't think there are any such shops near me though…

Where are you? It might be worth having a look around because more of them seem to be popping up around the place, which is great.

I also use the black stuff. An ad popped up on my instagram a couple of years ago and it was so bad, I felt sorry for him, so I bought a few and it's good stuff! Love the menthol variants. I sometimes use shower gel too. Whatever I'm feeling at the time.

Cork city centre. I might try some of the health stores. 👍️

Soap, love the faith in nature brand, sold in boots and online with Amazon. Don't like Palmolive or dove, and even Aldi sells white bar soap reasonable enough and smells ok. Shower gel I find is just wasteful.

Use The Black Stuff as well. Find it very refreshing and like the rough scrub ones.

Some of the scents are nice.

Have a couple of their anti perspirants but found they dried out very quickly.

Soap. There's hundreds of them made with all sorts of Irish produce from seaweed to Guinness. Local minimal waste grocery has them in our village, Dublin city centre has dozens of shops selling excellent soaps, some pharmacy's stock them too.

Strong soap fan: good scrub with soap and hot water, clean as a whistle. Just rinse thoroughly, of course.

No plastic bottle to pollute the earth - I can buy soap wrapped in paper, which I compost.

Soap is very versatile, too - for all kinds of cleaning, not just self in shower.

And there's a million types, scents and flavours: I specially like the exfoliating ones, for patches of rough skin.

Surprised by how many people use soap in the shower. I always use shower gel but bought a few lovely handmade soaps at a craft fair. I tried it but didn't give a good lather so back to the bottles.

I prefer shower gel in the shower but soap for washing hands. Himself is another big fan of the Black Stuff. One of the long reads in the Journal's Sitdown Sunday recently was actually about how soap fell out of fashion, it was really interesting, will see if I can find the link.

Edit: Here we go - Bathrooms across America are suddenly missing one thing. You’ll regret it when it’s gone.

I find I feel much cleaner and fresh after showering with soap..i lather up a face cloth and wash my body with it. Soap is also handy for travelling, its small, light, as its not a liquid, you dont need to put it in a ziplock bag, and you can wash your small clothes with soap if you dont have access to laundry while travelling.

I think this is just a generation thing, I don't know of anyone who uses a bar of soap to shower with. Granted I don't know the ins and outs of all my mates routines but from being in their houses and using the bathroom I'm yet to see any with a bar of soap.

The prevalence of shower gels in supermarkets would show that there's a much larger demand for it than bars of soap.

Soap is Lipid (fat, animal or plant) with Lye (wood ash H2SO4, sodium hydroxide), boiled up and recondensed in a cycle in a reflux environment. There is a great video on youtube on the last handmade soap factory in Lebanon. Its all poured out on a lime stone floor and cooled, then cut, stacked and cured for a month and packaged. Uncured soap will tear the skin off you.

This is the country that whinged and moaned for 6 months about having to bring some cans and bottles back for a deposit when they were on the way to the supermarket anyway.

Your shower gel suggestion may cause an insurrection.

I’ve been using L’Oreal men expert for a while now, hair and body wash, does the job, nicely fragrant without being overpowering…

I haven't used soap since the 80's when I would have the weekly bath.

Ummm... Am I the only one who simply uses the shampoo as a shower gel?!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,218 ✭✭✭SupaCat95

Just came out of a lecture about SDS detergent……… not the same but close enough to Sodium Lauryl Sulphate which we use in shampoos and soaps.

Radox do huge bottles and refills that they claim use a significant % less plastic; but the refills feel far less recyclable to me

PET bottles like the normal stuff comes in can be recycled relatively well by now - normal 500ml Coke in Ireland comes in fully recycled PET bottles. The refills are using two different types of plastic moulded together which means they are probably only fit to be burnt as waste to energy incinerator fuel.

I just use the huge bottles so there's less total number of bottles being used. Have changed to hand soap because the pumps on liquid soap cannot be recycled at all; and most liquid soap has antibacterials in it that you don't really want to over-use.

6 months? The same 4 or 5 people are still at it daily on the thread on here!
