I actually enjoyed that but possibly in the haphazard sense. Roll on china

This track usually shows us good racing with the walls and high speed.

I think China in a week will shows us a different picture.

I think because so much depends on the relative battery levels of each car, the overtaking leaves me a little cold.

First laps were fantastic, when was the last time we saw so many changes at the top without rain?

Looking forward to see the mobile phone recordings from the track of start and on track.

Watched it live, for Australia it was better than usual but as said above the second half wasn’t great. Merc are the leader of the pack for now, we know Ferrari will Ferrari and it’s hard to judge RB and McL just yet but I think RB shade them just about. Exceptional drive from Max and Hadjar was involved at the front before his engine failure. Norris didn’t do anything and didn’t threaten to either but he done well to keep Max at bay for that final stint.

Now to get ready for work 🙄

I turned it on just Piastri put it into the wall, a decent open couple of laps but Merc winning felt inevitable. Great opening lap from Lindblad and a good recovery drive from Verstappen but you'd expect that from him. Norris pretty anonymous through the race. Hopefully one of the teams can catch up with Merc, it looks like the season will not be too enjoyable

JUst watched the replay on Sky… Interesting first lap (or no lap from Piastri) as many predicted.

    well done Merc&Ferrari.

Happy that Red Bull and Racing Bulls look competitive. Max did well, Hadjar will do well…

Better than I expected with plenty of action at the start of the race. Ferrari missed up not pitting at least one driver during the VSC.

My worry is that as we saw in the 2nd half of the race, the drivers understand the battery deployments better now and that could lead to them cancelling each other out.

I went to bed just before Russell crossed the line.

What a shambolic display. There was not one overtake today except at the begining down to driver skill it's all battery management and you could see as the race went on the drivers learned were to use the battery were was best to use it. This is 100% worse than DRS atleast with DRS you be hoping your driver would get within 1 second to use. Charles overtakes at the begining was the highlight of the whole race. Also 15 cars, finished a lap down or more. Did anyone else notice on the final stint where the Mercs were still lapping faster on 35 lap old tyres than Lando on brand new tyres. This season is over. I dont know if true what I seen but reports Mercs used very little battery in the final part of the race and kept there gap distance. Which does not bode well for other teams.

The cars look nimble which is the only positive of the whole weekend.

    good race.

Cars look good. That's a good thing. There was a bit of racing, not bad too.

The whole battery element just feels so arbitrary and artificial. It's not as obvious as during quali but still feels wrong - they will have to make changes to the regs if it doesn't sort itself out in next few races.

Mercedes look ominous, once they get past the fast starting Ferrari looks like it'll be there's to lose each race.

And side note - the change in timing tower to just tenths of seconds is a crap idea. I'm guessing it's to hide the fact that the gaps will be much bigger this year, but still...

First half of the race good, second half forgettable. Ferrari continuing their poor in race strategy by ignoring two virtual safety car opportunities to pit. With the power of Mercedes, it's possible they would have finished on those positions anyway. But by not pitting when they should have, they never gave themselves a chance.

Sky were pathetic over the last 20 laps, trying to pretend Mercedes were any way under pressure, and might need to pit. Ferrari never even remotely closed the gap, after eventually pitting.

If Merc are going to be dominant this season, at least they'll give the two drivers a fair shot at it, unlike when Redbull are top dogs.

Watching the rerun on Sky F1.

Croft talks about sweet shops and eating all the sweets trying to explain the new energy strategy that drivers are adopting.

Brundle follows up by explaining the power harvested by the cars is enough to power an average house for a day.

    Croft needs to be sacked.

an interesting race overall I thought, in that you never knew what was going to happen next, VSCs, mechanicals etc. lots going on until things settled down after lap 35/40 - and then it was just like any final 1/3 of a race from the last few seasons.

russel and leclerc swapping the lead throughout the first 10 laps the obvious highlight - overtaking was simple once you had a battery advantage over the car in front. That said, some of the overtakes looked like F2 v F1 cars.

The best cars filled the top spots, but there’s a potentially huge gap from the top 4 teams to the midfield.

Great to see BEA, LIN & BOR being best of the rest ….. but a lap down in 7,8,9th 😳

Better race than I had feared. Ferrari's fast starts could be a huge advantage. You feel like Ferrari dropped the ball on strategy as usual; it would have been great to see a straight race between them and Merc as Leclerc looks comfortable during the first stint.

You need a VPN and F1TV, I haven't had to listen to Croft commentate as if he's talking to children for years now.

Not sure I'll be watching F1 anymore though, regardless of who's commentating.

Watching cars try to overtake eachother while both are slowing down is like the final insult to fans

What we got today was Artificial Nonsense.

If Bahrain and Saudi are cancelled it will be a five week break between Japanese GP to Miami GP.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,575 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

There's apparently a meeting after China to discuss how rules have started, so there's a good chance to come up with changes (if needed) between Japan and Miami if the middle East races are cancelled.

I saw Max answering a Q about how great it must feel to have so many good overtakes today and move through the field - and he shut it down straight away, said he was simply moving through the field like a race leader lapping cars that were running 2sec/lap slower.

Overall I’ll be staying tuned in for sure - if only to see where all this settles down over the first half of the season

You'd miss the glory days of the BBC coverage, before sky got involved. It was handy when there was the alternative coverage on the now long dead eir sport. Croft is brutal. I'm so used to his schtick, it doesn't even get to me that much anymore. But they're so badly informed a lot of the time, get it wrong so often and have terrible hot takes, I'd be able to follow the race easily enough, without any commentary at all, of the option was there.

I don’t notice the commentary at all. It certainly doesn’t ruin it anyway, I’m usually miles ahead of them with what’s going on, so they are pretty superfluous.
Croft is like drive to survive - he’s not there to pander to seasoned F1 fans.

btw, those initial battery deployment graphics that appeared and disappeared around lap 20-40 were awful! Impossible to understand the diff between overtake and boost - both of which mean the same thing to any normal person.

The more simple graphic that they tried later on with a battery 🪫 and % was better, but a long way to go.

F1 will be happy after today I guarantee it.

Awe no I would not wish that on anyone at there home race not even Piastri. That was just terrible crual for that to happen to him. I would have liked to see how he would do in the race.

Delighted for George Russell. Not a bad race. 2nd half was boring. First half certainly better.

Mercedes seem to be the team to beat.

120 overtakes in total, which looks impressive but they were just passes and repasses.

This doesn’t feel like flat out racing at all now.

It doesn't feel like flat out racing because it's not. It's literally the opposite.

Formula 1 not being flat out is such a disgrace. I know it hasn't been flat out for years now with the tyre management but this is another level entirely.

Formula 3 is officially better at this stage
