Ray was grossly offended last October when RTE offered him a move to RTE Gold with a 77% paycut, so he walked out but next Monday he's getting some of the old gang back together with an new podcast.

I quite liked him and the show when he moved to today FM initially. Somewhere along the way he started believing in his own importance and became very preachy. Will happily not ever hear his podcast

Hopefully he gets similar numbers as tubridys

His early years on Today FM were good fun. I wonder was it the 2008 crash that made him a grumpy old git ?

I think this possibly, and he gave up the drink. Albeit it was only one glass of wine on a friday evening!!!

I know doctors say you should drink a glass and a half but I just can't drink that much.

    Great man …. don't worry I won't start :)

Good luck to him. But I can see it going the way of Tubs TBH.

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

Ryan had 2 people watching the LIVE version on YouTube a few weeks ago and 12 on Instagram. Heady heights indeed!

A lovely positive note to begin his new venture, in keeping with his sunny world view…..

Good luck to him, it can't be easy to be sacked at that age in life and all in public. I liked him on Today Fm but didn't like him on RTE so gave up very early on listening to him there.

I'll put in on my list of podcasts and give it a try

Astonishing that he hasn’t been snapping up by the opposition. Isn’t that the reason he has earning the big bucks just to keep him in RTR

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,070 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Both himself and Tubs are yesterday's men. Its time they accepted that there isnt thousands of people in the country who care enough about what they have to say to make the effort to listen to them any more.

    Hang up the microphones guys.

He went on and on about giving up the drink. Anyone would think that up to that point he was some kind of cross between Brendan Behan and Oliver Reed.
Recall him once talking about a fabulous barbecue that he had on a bank holiday Monday “ we opened a lovely bottle of white wine and had a glass, just one of course “ . Sanctimonious pryck !

having read the article, he has no self awareness of any sort, it’s all “poor me”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Døm

Darcy has confirmed in that interview that he was insulated to be offered RTE Gold and turned it down. Boards members who didn't believe the op of the below thread owe them an apology https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058428490/will-ray-d-039-arcy-ever-work-again

Was that a freudian slip for insulted?

He'd be insulated from the cruel cruel world in RTE Gold alright :)

It was just before the 11th anniversary of his move to RTÉ that Ray realised that he was not happy in RTÉ

Can't read the article now @Døm is this the one you are referring too?

I assume it was 50K for a pre-recorded show on GOLD?

There are daily news podcasts, but there isn’t anything that isn’t strictly news.”

    There are?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,509 ✭✭✭✭expectationlost

The daily podcast starts on March 9th. It will be 40 to 45 minutes long and will be “freshly baked”, recorded each weekday morning and put out at 10.30am. Collaborators will include Jenny as well as long time foil Mairead Ronan and comedian Bernard O’Shea (Jenny and Mairead Ronan had their own podcast, Jenny and Mairead Now, for a spell).

I dont mind admitting I have something of a crush on Liz Truss. She has a youtube channel now. Heady heights indeed going from Prime Minister to having a YouTube channel. She does have 23k subscribers, but in saying that I'm a subscriber and have watched a grand total of about 4 minutes before going "Ah jaysus…", and turning it off.

The thing about podcasts… I listen to the radio mostly via Amazon Echo, so I say Echo play RTE Radio 1, or play Newstalk, or play CNN International, and it plays whatever in the background as I work. For the most part I dont really mind what it is. To listen to a podcast, I have to go looking for it, play it on whatever medium, try and focus on it. So unless whichever podcast is ground breaking stuff, I really dont think I'll be waking up on the 11th of March thinking OMG! I can't wait for the next edition of Ray Darcy's podcast!

Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner started a podcast recently. If you are not familiar with them, they were actors in Star Trek and Frakes now directs. I listened to two episodes and basically gave up. It's basically two friends having a chat. Well I could go down my local pub and listen to two auld fellas talking and get a better experience.

So I really wonder how Ray is going to fair.

OK I know this sounds cruel but I can just imagine him doing his first podcast, talking into a mic for an hour and then going "Oh no! I forgot to press record!". We all know he's not great with the buttons.

@Døm I assume it is the Irish Time Article, it does say he was offered GOLD but he then goes on to say that what he was offered was … too much for GOLD.

@LambshankRedemption I say this is the same for most people, I have a podcast that I listen too when I am heading to work as it is a long trip, but it is in the background at the same time and much like Radio it gets me home.

It's one thing working with a spouse in a workplace. Another thing doing it (probably) at home, under pressure to make it 5 days a week.

Even more so considering the stink of humiliation and failure under which this podcast is beginning.

The DArcys should really spend big on good production etc.

Sadly, the fella who famously complained on air about the rise in the price of the subsidized soup at the RTE canteen is unlikely to do that.

I hope his missus or someone close to him will advise him to stop when it's affecting things at home.

Like Tubridy, he has made good money. Just stop and maybe he'll come back into fashion in a few years?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Døm

He might have actually thought it was too much money as well because he was offered the same deal as Ronan Collins, basically go in on a Monday morning, read a script written by Michael cahill for a couple of hours and go home till the following Monday. Eric tuffles would then slot in his links, music and the jingles in the right places.

My thoughts exactly. A daily podcast is a lot of work. Discussing world events. OK, but there are days when there are no major events.

I thought about doing a youtube channel a while back, and one of the bits of advice I got was film 10, ideally 20 episodes so you have something to fall back on on the day you can't or dont want to to a show. Well filming 20 episodes back to back is no small feat. And have a list of topics you want to cover. I ran out of topics after about 7.

My parents worked together and from home, but for external clients and were reasonably happy doing so. But, working from home, generating your own content, with your wife as your producer, this could go south very quickly.

And as you said, someone who complained about the price of subsidized soup in the canteen has probably not shelled out for decent mics, and other decent equipment.

5 days from now, Jenny: "Ah FFS RAY, did you forget to press the record button again!?!?

I wish him the best but that article in The Times does him no favours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15 Døm

I don't think D'arcys voice & personality would have suited RTE Gold voicetracking at all, voicetracking really needs a Tony Fenton/Larry Gogan type "dj voice" to sound genuine. I never listened myself but i heard people say that it didn't really suit Ronan Collins either.

So many podcasts are mates having a chat, and to be honest one of the reasons I haven't listened to many podcasts since they caught on. Most I have tried are crap and didnt encourage me to return.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,725 ✭✭✭Bellbottoms

No, the rot started well before that. I found it very hard to listen to from at least 2016.

I suspect it all started to go downhill when Martin Maguire left the show. I thing he was trying to get into acting and left. He did an advert for Louth GAA filmed in Meath. I suppose they couldn't find anywhere nice enough in Louth and had to go to Meath.

Then Ray had his first kid and like most older first time dads spent the whole show talking about what amazing things Kate did or said. Yawn….

I think the sighs only started after the move to RTE.

A man terminaly bored with his lot was the impression I got listening.
