Yes I saw this interview too and he said as Jazz says above. He didn't say will win, he says thats the goal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,397 ✭✭✭newhouse87

"That's our goal and that's what we are going to do" in relation to winning the league, munster and all ireland.

Sure what else is he supposed to say? Sure we'll have a go. Sure we'll do our best. We'll see whay happens. If he put in a 'that's what we are going to 'Try' to do' - a 3 letter word - then maybe no one take issue with it.

They won the league last year.

    They won Munster last year.

They got to the final before losing.

Their target is to better last years achievements - win it all. That's the goal. Ben has them playing like he wants to win every game. Trying to instill a winning mentality.

    So far so good.

There will no doubt be losses along the way - that's sport. Every Limerick and Tip player have their eyes on winning Liam. And another few counties too. Cork are no different. To think otherwise is ridiculous. It's funny how issue can be taken with a comment like that after a game.

Calm Down. I merely put up the correct quote as previous posters were incorrect to say he didnt say we would win it. I didn't give an opinion on his quote so your response is ott to me. It was cork poster who took isse with it here .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,416 ✭✭✭lukin

He did say we will win it. His exact words were "Keep winning, win the league, win Munster and win the All Ireland. That’s what we’re going to do"

    It's 5 minutes into this clip; https://x.com/i/status/2028157495584125394

In fairness to him I don't think he meant to say "We'll win the All-Ireland", he meant to ay "We will keep winning".

That's what I took it as too. Context and how it was said was just in the confidence mode rather than we will def win !

Then there is the other side where I remember Dennis Walsh before a championship game saying "we will give it a go" he said it so meekly I knew we were not going to win. We want confidence but not arrogance or meekness!!

Limerick won the league , Munster & All ireland a few times in recent years , no reason why cork won’t strive for the same .

Especially with a new manager. A winning mentality is needed to get over the line. Start as you mean to continue and see what happens.

Don't see much wrong in what he said.

That should be the aim. Doing it of course has been our downfall lately but ya got to believe as a player

I think he meant to say "Winning the AI is our goal" rather than "We will win it". I don't think it was a clever thing to say however and if we fall short again this year no doubt it will be dragged up.

    True.

But no matter what we get roasted anyway if we dont.

Sure they are already out with the hatchets here and in the other thread.

Sure even when we dont play they are talking about us.

Although I do find it amusing at times. Kinda enjoy the hatred.

I don't enjoy being hated but I am not actually sure Cork are universally, right across the board hated among other counties. Limerick probably hate us, because of that stupid song the Cork team sang after the Munster final last year and also that we stopped them winning the five-in-a-row. Other counties dislike us because according to them every single Cork supporter was dead certain before the AI final last year that all we had to do was turn up to win. That wasn't actually the case. Yes there were a lot of Cork supporters who were over-confident but not everyone was. I for one, wasn't.

Plenty other counties can be cocky too, not just Cork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 35,763 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

Cork and Dublin are just going be hated in general full stop. That comes with the success and size alone.

Tbh I dont have issue at all with it.

Geography plays huge part too. Kerry seem be liked in general for successful county but if they were say where Meath is or in Ulster the good will would be much different.

Thats common among most sports not just GAA thing.

If your able give it though ya got be able take it. Lot cant do that.

Limerick announced their team tonight. Basically their championship team without Peter Casey or Morrissey.

Seems like they are really going for it. I'm hoping we pick a team like that played Kilkenny. Try out some more guys and see how they go. Not a totally néw team though. No need to go all out yet

I have no issues with what Alan Connolly said but it's all background noise and hot air as such at the end of the day. Although in terms of the media i do think that Anthony Daly has it in for us and i don't think it's paranoia either.

I reckon he's still bitter about the 2005 and 2013 all Ireland semi finals when his Clare and Dublin teams he was managing lost to Cork.

I do think we should do what the Kerry crowd do if we get back into another all Ireland final, and just blow whoever we're playing up with talk hyping them up to the high heavens and try and place all the the pressure on them.

We potentially will be playing Limerick in the league final, and of course there's Munster and a potential meeting in Croke Park further down the line as well.

Maybe we shouldn't show our full hand as such but it seems that's not Ben O'Connor's way or in his nature in the slightest, so we may as well tear into Limerick and beat them on Saturday night.

There's no hate about the 5 in a row. We were beaten fair in a great game of hurling is the general narrative. Would have been more Limerick people wanted Ye to win the final that year too.

There is a nasty rivalry forming between the younger sections of both sides though. It's far too antagonist for my liking.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,683 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

Is there really? Obviously when you're at the top for a certain period of time you want to see that team get knocked off their perch, but personally myself i dislike Tipperary and Kilkenny more although Tipp shade it there due to last July and the 1991 Munster final replay.😞

Although that statement implies that i dislike Limerick in the first place when in general i have great time for the place and it's people. In saying that though the Gaelic Grounds has been bit of a cursed venue for Cork teams over the years.

The footballers almost lost there in the qualifiers that year we won the all Ireland in 2010, although Limerick probably should have won at least one Munster title in football in the years from 2004 to 2010.

Ah we're just getting old. I'd say we'd have been delighted with that bit of edge/niggle when we were younger. FWIW I've noticed nothing untoward other than people moaning about Cork fans (which is a perennial topic) a bit more than usual now that Cork have a genuinely competitive team. It makes sense though: team going well means we have a bigger bandwaggon, with naturally more dopey behaviour and silly hype than before.

I'd agree that Anthony Daly seems to have an issue alright though. I see grudging respect or intermittent negativity from others in the media, but he seems to just have a single-track mind / agenda with regards Cork. The team or its fans could find a cure for cancer and Dalo would somehow manage to turn it into a negative.

Tip and Kilkenny would be up there on their own re rivalry with Cork in my view. Modern day Limerick too but a far and distant third.

Daly has a real iasue with Cork, we've clearly left some deep scars on him - no harm at all.

Team announced. Ben is doing great stuff with his team selections. 8 changes!

Eoin Roche, Ger Millerick, Ethan Twomey, Micheál Mullins, Shane Kingston, Collins, Barrett and Alan Walsh all start!

is that about 8 starters come championship with 5-6 more in the subs plus Connolly and Coleman? Surprised he is not going stronger?

That team should give a near championship Limerick team a good game.

We could well play Limerick 5 times this year - that's a fine selection for this one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 310 ✭✭King Power Fox

Do you expect Cork to win against the near championship Limerick team tomorrow. Agree on the 5 times - I think it's bad and shows the lack of teams playing at the highest level. Wexford, Galway, Laois, Offaly and Dublin could do so much more.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 36,918 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

I expect that team to give Limerick a good game, we'll have to see if it's good enough on the day to get the win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,897 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

its nothing to do with that , cork are probably disliked by the hurling counties the last few years with all the fanfare attached to a a side that has failed to deliver on two or three occasions in all ireland finals while playing the best hurling in the country and being the team of the non hurling counties up the country

we were the same years ago , the northern counties used to love us but we were always a bit of a Cinderella story , corks style of play has won over a lot of neutrals up the country and begrudgingly amongst the hurling counties too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,645 ✭✭✭awaywithyou

i actually think the opposite.. dont think Ben is taking this game too seriously… sure he has selected Eoin Downey at 6… no opposition could take that team seriously with him on the field not to mind to have him playing at centre back..

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 36,918 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

Eoin was never a full back, he is a far better player at half back and had being playing well there. Why not try him at centre back? Move him across if he is getting destroyed - which I doubt he will - hardly a big deal. Try something new in the league - it's literally what it is there for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,645 ✭✭✭awaywithyou

Cork might get away with him out on the wing... but not in the centre... doesnt command the area or have a presence like the Rock or Ronan Curran did.. imo Ciaran Joyce is the most natural 6 Cork have but he isnt played there..

Good win for Cork minor footballers in Leinster league final vs Louth at SETU Carlow. Cork came into it well in the 2nd half after a slow start. 2:12 to 1:13
