We've put all our eggs in the Wirtz basket to be the creative fulcrum of the team. So when he doesn't play, we have no clue what to do. Previously we were more plug and play with defined roles in the team. Origi or Shaqiri could deputise and we would carry on. There would be a drop in quality obviously but the style of play would remain the same and we would create chances.

There is a chance Wirtz could be on the bench tomorrow night

Last 10 games has Liverpool about 7th in form. They need a fairly decent uptick in form during a period where their games are going to increase and be very demanding physically on the squad. (Can't throw a second string out at the business end).

So surprising enough to read the high confidence in here considering the loss this week.

Looking at the squads each has Liverpool should be comfortably 3rd but yet everytime it seems to open up they fall flat.

Villa come to OT next. So there will be another opportunity for Pool there. Will they let it slip again?

United and Chelsea squads are very similar to Liverpool's. Liverpool first 11 is better when everyone is available.

I wouldn't say my confidence in Liverpool is high, just that my confidence that at least one of United Chelsea and Villa will drop off is fairly high (not including Bretford here but they also are one to watch of course). Both united and Chelsea got major boosts from new managers, and that is starting to wean I think so they will start to revert to the mean, which is probably about the same as us. Villa are actually 13th in that same form table, so are on a big plunge. They will probably also improve a little bit back, and likewise are about the same threat as we are.

Overall though when put together it gives us all about 75% chance of finishing top 5, which I think is about right.

Without getting into the Michael Owen levels of punditry, there are a couple of alternative scenarios, one of which is that we completely crap out again, like earlier in the season, and go on a bad run. Alternatively there is a chance that we finally click into gear and go on a good run. However neither of these chances change the odds much imo.

Utd's squad is their weak point.
It certainly isn't close to that of Liverpool.

There are a LOT of players at Utd still who won't be there after the next couple of windows.

Utd have floor issue within the squad for sure. It's way below where it needs to be

Yeah I'm more surprised given what has been on show this season overall, recent form and what appears to be a manager who is maybe not at the level many thought he was, that there is a confidence that Liverpool have less to overcome than the other sides.

Like I said all things being equal and on paper Liverpool should get CL but for a long time now they have been underperforming that reality.

Utd's front 3 or so will see them over the line comfortably.

Man Utd have to play Villa, Chelsea and ourselves on the run-in.

We also play Chelsea and Villa.

Plenty of opportunities to for us to take points off our competitors for CL places and for them to take points off each other.

We could really do with Wirtz back in the team and quickly.

65 points will pretty much guarantee 5th based on historic tables since 1995. Average points needed in that time is 61. Liverpool need 17 points from 9 games. 5 wins 2 draws and 2 defeats. 5 wins possible from home games Spurs, Fulham, Palace, Brentford home and 1 away win somewhere Brighton, Everton or Villa. Then possible draws Everton, Utd, Chelsea or Villa. And 2 defeats possibly away.

It will be close. Ideally we avoid defeat against Top 5 rivals. That would see us home.

If they can’t beat Spurs in the next league game the real melt downs will begin I’d say.

Spurs just lost Micky Van Der Ven, their best player,, straight red, will he miss our game? Or would a cup game count as a suspension?

I rhink the cup game counts.

    Didnt it count for Dom?

Does any one think Jones could be moved on in the summer?

Have a feeling Mac could look to leave too.

We should be trying to get Wharton locked down early.

I know it's against 10 men but he's running the game

Actually, aren't Spurs out of the cup? Meaning he will miss our game. He is the only bit of glue holding together, barely.

Frustrating that we've seen two red cards this week for very similar fouls to the one city got away with vs us.

On another note this really is a nightmare season for Spurs, relegation threatened and Arsenal are winning the league.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,191 ✭✭✭dogbert27

True, which is why the game is today.

I cant see them stopping this freefall

Would his price go down if they're relegated?

If we can't beat Spurs Slot has to go

Usually it's the teams fighting for their lives at the squeaky bum end of the season that you don't want to meet. But Spurs have no fight in them tonight. Shocking stuff. I agree with you. Win against Spurs is a must win.

Without VDV to cover in behind, could see a returning Romero getting himself into trouble with his temper too.

We have a really tough end to the season, the derby against Everton, Crystal Palace who have been a real thorn in our side this season, and all our direct rivals for CL places, which could be a good thing as we could take points from them but, could also go the other way too, then rounded off against Brentford who destroyed us away, so not an easy finish if we need a win. I think it will likely come down between ourselves and Villa for the last CL place; Chelsea are in better form, have a much better goal difference, which we are unlikely to close, so that's worth a point to them, United are in better form and have no distractions., hopefully Villa get to Europa League final, so they might take their eye off the league. It's likely to be very tight for us to get CL, the game against Villa will likely prove decisive.

We haven’t exactly faired very well against teams down the table either so on one hard they are though games but any game would be. On the other hand if we can get wins they are like 6 pointers.
