It'll be the same team again, no doubt about it. The less this team plays the worse it gets. 10 days till the next game and watch us come out of the traps like a 90 year old granny.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

Not really. The performances recently speak for themselves. Everyone knows we're not playing well.

Sesko bailed us out after poor displays vs Everton & West Ham. The sending off vs Palace totally changed the complexion of the game, in which we were very average.

Carrick & Co. did well to accumulate that points total since arriving. But we just aren't a Top 3 side.

Result has been coming for weeks. Mainoo continues to flatter to decieve, he's been average-poor for weeks now.

M'Buemo poor tonight, Cunha is lost on the left IMO and better suited to a central role.

Casemiro at 70% fitness and 34 years old continues to be our standout CM option.

We miss Licha badly when he's not in the team. Yoro is still a kid and more than capable but he's not the finished product.

All that said Ramsdale made a couple of fantastic saves but honestly we didn't deserve anything tonight

As everyone knows the squad still needs serious work both in terms of starting quality and depth.

Carrick may not be the answer, still probably too early to say really, but if the club have any ambition serious reinforcements are needed in th summer. The current squad can't deal with 1 game a week so will be at nothing with a fuller schedule.

    Newcastle deserved.

    Mainoo, Ugarte, Malacia were woeful.

Shaw, Maz & Mbuemo not great either.

We should have still won but a very lethargic poor performance.

trying to get the ball off joelinton in this game was like watching kids play against messi. it was crazy to see, and really shows how weak our midfield is

good test for carrick in fairness…..how does he now react?

Performance here tonight has been absolutely shocking. They were better than us with 11 on the pitch, better again with 10.

So many players not putting a shift in, we should of went for it 2nd half but never looked at it all game.

Sesko on form but rarely got fed the ball.

Bruno tried his best but can only do so much with his balls in.

Pissed off with that effort from the rest of them!

Was a great run. The luck that got results from a couple of poor performances ran out.

It’ll be good to see how the team and coach deal with adversity. Still in a great spot for a CL spot so should be no lack of motivation.

Ah sure it's all good, the players are happy now training is shorter and really isn't that all that matters. Who needs intensity when the players can be happy they spend less time at work

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,142 ✭✭✭✭JRant

By all accounts he's scaled back the volume of training and gone for shorter more intensive sessions, sometimes even finishing those early as well.

They always bully us especially in midfield.

I thought without Guimares we had a chance to compete but Joelinton did the damage .

Mainoo is nowhere near ready to play regularly in midfield.

Our fitness levels also look to have dipped dramatically since Carrick came in.

MBuemo has been shocking for weeks. He should have been hooked at half time for Amad. Mainoo had a mare. Carrick if he has anything about him should tear them a new one in the dressing room.

Hopefully it'll act as a kick up the arse for us. We've been on an unreal run and a reality check can be as good as a win sometimes.

If that had been a draw I’d still be saying we were a pile of pure shizer. That was coming and you could see v Palace that we looked wrecked tired and that’s coming from a team that is playing ONCE a week ffs.

Villa is a must win & a defeat would be catastrophic.

Superb winning goal tbh, but we just never looked like we had enough to go on and win it v a ten men outfit.

    Fair play to Newcastle

AFCON has deflated Mbeumo, Amad and Mazraoui. None have been great since returning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,142 ✭✭✭✭JRant

Ugarte nearly scored and was an improvement on Mainoo who done the square root of fook all tonight. Malacia? Fella hasn't kicked a ball in months and got 10 minutes at the end. The goal was more on Maguire, watch the replay, he starts to come out, stops, retreats and then just shows him the inside to have a crack. He's desperate when not box defending.

Cas has been blessed hes had such a light schedule this season, he looked banjoed after 20 minutes this evening.

We were going to lose eventually so it's about how we react. The fact that Liverpool got humiliated by the worst team in the league last night takes the bite out of tonight's result but make no mistake, the race for the CL places will go down to the wire.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,516 ✭✭✭mobydopy

Another example of how we just don’t have a good enough squad to compete when we have to play more than one game a week

Next season could get really ugly if we don’t massively improve our squad this summer. You just can’t rely on the likes of Ugarte, Zirkzee, Malacia, Mazraoui, Mount and even some of our regular first teamers like Dalot and Shaw.

Not a massively damaging result in relation to the top 5 race but will be interesting to see how Carrick reacts to this loss now and how we play against Villa.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,305 ✭✭✭AidoEirE

Squad needs investment. Not much that could be brought off the bench to go for it.

45mins the lads on the pitch should of been able to finish that off.

Case although not having a good game shows that when he does come off we concede again.

Yeah maybe im harsh on Ugarte thinking about it , I just don't rate him and didn't think too much of his header....but Malacia was rustyh as fack and anyone else would have been better than him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,213 ✭✭✭Acosta

I'm not going to get too worked up about the result. It was bad. They deserved it. The club are still in a great position in terms of UCL qualification. Now we might see if Carrick has the chops for the job full time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 970 ✭✭✭ollkiller

Aye. I'd still have Amad on before Mbuemo atm. His touch is shocking and he loses the ball half the time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,080 ✭✭✭✭Zeek12

Better to see Carrick get tested now, rather than another 5-6 weeks of wins (with more good fortune involved).

It would make the clamor to give him the job almost unstoppable.

We'll learn a lot more about his credentials and his abilities in the weeks ahead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,142 ✭✭✭✭JRant

I wouldn't have minded seeing a more attacking player brought on for Malacia, who lets be honest has no business still being at the club.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 17,456 ✭✭✭✭Nalz

What's clear to the blind people is midfielders are needed badly, along with a fit CB, a RB and a better striker bench option

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 970 ✭✭✭ollkiller

Aye Ugarte had a good 20 mins. Did more than half the team did for 90 mins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,305 ✭✭✭AidoEirE

Would of said the opposite, that goal doesnt happen with Shaw on the pitch

Malacia didnt know whether to go tight for a tackle or track the run. He was in no man's land.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,550 ✭✭✭Daroxtar

The fitness and intensity has been sliding downhill for the past few weeks. Hard to know if the lack of games has impacted us or more worryingly that we're just not being trained properly now. Amorim definitely had us in better shape, just a pity we couldn't play football with him in charge.
