MMost Movements are done online here, posted off a movement cert on 25/2 they're still not out of my herd. The farmer can't accept online. Anyone else seeing delays? I printed another one off this morning in case the other one was lost somewhere

When you mess around on the ihfa website, they have alot of very average poor cows and also smashers too, like alot of holstein breeders they have a awful habit of recycling poor cows because of a family line and wanting a heifer calf from said cow that might be 6/7/8 vg ex etc....

Was Thinking of buying a couple of calves in monamore If I could get them delivered down my way which must be nearly 200 miles.

I'm after getting about 33% replacement heifer calves here myself though.

    Must look into transport.

Recycling between spring/autumn is a balls alright. They have alot of repeat customers at their sales and they are all very happy from what I see. I dont know how accurate the co op report is when it comes to spring/autumn herds. Alot of cows coming in and out of the system.

70% calved here in 28 days. I'll have the collars on for next year so we might be able to tighten it up a bit. 😲 🫨

    It's a young man's game now.

Is there an app that you can put in solids and it tells you milk price

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 31,981 ✭✭✭✭whelan2

I'd say the mart will be able to organise transport

Couple of calves you're going to do well to get them home for 3000.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,373 ✭✭✭visatorro

One clown show here, and iv convinced myself I wouldn't be able to calf down 70% in a month! At the same time im feeding calves since September and im getting sick of it aswell now! All through the one calf shed which isn't ideal.

    3k for 2 delivered like.....🤔

I have a closed herd since I bought my own in 2017. Afraid of mortellaro amd a few more things…

Calves are the only thing I would consider. Add in a couple of families into my own herd to breed from. I'd have to wait 3 or 4 years to see how they fit in with my own girls though.

I see fert hitting 800/T in the other thread, any potential 3c/l supports similar to the weather supports a couple of years ago?

Between blue tongue, tb, milk price , fuel price, fertiliser price, weather tis a **** enough time atm

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,172 ✭✭✭✭mahoney_j

costs are the real killer atm ….suppliers etc just seem to have feee reign to up prices and use conflict as n Middle East etc as an excuse …coops would really want to be passing back milk price rises to us pretty quick …govt also have bible to play …bit younger in cheek of them to be on about price gouging when such a high proportion of every litre of fuel is tax

Bad management.... They were great to advise farmers how to improve water quality.

Plenty challenges alright. But on the other hand, I took 2 empty cows to the mart the other day and i got about 250% more than what was the old price a couple of years ago. Also, I felt sick every spring as i gave away fine calves for 5 euro, got told they were underfed, worthless byproducts, etc. Took 3 of the same quality Fr bulls to the mart a few days ago and ill be getting a cheque of 1000 euro.

Weather is normal here. Would be delighted to get the cows out by paddy's day.

Doesn't milk price usually follow oil price, could we see a bounce on the back of this, every cloud and all that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,284 ✭✭✭blackdog1

Not till back end i recon. High fertiliser prices will result in higher feed prices, this will force big fed lots to cut production. Were in an over supply situation at the moment so it will take a while for this to balance.

The same here in the month of February. We milk all year round so what’s left will calve over a couple months. Had 150 calves to be fed up until the other day, passed the TB test and able to sell again now. I have the steps app on my iPhone. Was doing 25,000-29,000 steps a day. Up somewhere between 4am and 4.30am every day and not getting home until the kids were gone to bed. Could go for days without seeing them. The one conclusion I did draw for myself the other day was that people who say they’d carry on their life the exact same if they won the lottery are a bunch of liars 😂😂

    25,000 steps by 0.6m is 15kms.

    29,000 steps by 0.6m is 17.4kms.

Anyone following this milk contract issue? Will it “strengthen farmers’ position in the supply chain” and “improve transparency”?

For my height it works out around 20km of an average. Don’t think any of us here on this thread ought to be joining any gyms anytime soon 😂

I full on going to sell calves this morning. Going through the blue cards. Two cards missing. Looked on the icbf app and the samples were never received and these were in a batch sample with others that are on their system.

    Bvd tests back. But ....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 31,981 ✭✭✭✭whelan2

I found a couple of samples in my body warmer pocket a few weeks ago, they were for Friesian heifers and would have been there a while. When posting I make sure I'm posting the same amount of bvd as genomic samples and write my herd number and number of samples on the envelope

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,060 ✭✭✭✭Say my name

I use two jugs for sampling. One for the bvd and one for the geno. I put kitchen towel paper in the bottom to deaden the impact of the samples hitting the bottom. I then tip out the samples from the jugs on the kitchen table and put them in the envelopes. I write the herd number on the bvd envelope, I haven't done it for the geno. May do so now and write the number of samples too on the envelope.

The missing samples were concurrent numbers together. I've sent in the message anyway for call back and asked them to root around.

In all the bvd scheme this has never happened to me.

Every calf born here gets entered into a book with tag number, mothers number, sex, date of birth, name if pedigree for breeding, tick them off when card received so no errors. Can trace every cow family back over 30 years.
