Not one person even implied that.

Killing defenceless children IS the worst possible crime, but saying well done to the guy for attacking Huntley... where does that contain the sentiment "rape and murder of women - nah, not that big a deal"? (Huntley's victims were also female). One can be pleased about the attack on Huntley while also condemning the crimes that the attacker committed. One doesn't cancel out the other. I'd say some praising the other scumbag weren't aware at first of what his crimes were.

I'm not gonna go praising him because he is in no position to take the moral high ground, but I get why people are glad Huntley got his comeuppance (murdering two ten-year-olds will do that) and I certainly don't feel sorry for Huntley.

The likelihood that this guy attacked Huntley because of what he did to Holly & Jessica and not because of some internal prison spat is pretty low.

I think the same whenever I hear about a riot or rebellion in a prison: how on earth do prisoners like this (or any other prisoner, really) have access to one another? Why aren't they in a concrete box all day? Who had the bright idea to let them eat together, rather than shovelling a tray through a slot?

People need human interraction or they go mad. I'd say it's a lot easier to manage a prison full of inmates that are mentally doing okay than one where everyone has gone utterly insane from isolation.

Hard to know why it happened. Possibly a dispute between the men, but Huntley is a child killer and chomo. he's the lowest of the low, the bottom rung in prison hierarchy. These are untouchables and it's kinda surprising he's not in permanent protective custody for his own safety. The guy could've attacked him in a dispute but since Huntley is untouchable it surprising that anyone will have contact with him. In prison, you can't be seen interacting with an untouchable like Huntley or else you'll be putting a target on your own head too. But that guy sounded like he is also like Huntley and near the bottom of the prison food chain himself.

Another possibility is that the guy was tasked with "taking care of business" (ie killing Huntley) by a a shot caller or someone higher up the prison hierarchy. The thing with being asked to take care of business by a shot caller or someone who has the keys to the yard is that you have 2 choices 1) get on with it and take care of the business, whatever it might be, killing stabbing, slashing, shiving, shanking etc or 2) don't do it and the higher ups will take care of you and you'll get it.

Problem with that is Huntley is there years and his papers are well known. If shot callers wanted him dead he'd have been sliced up years ago.

Look up Wes Watson and Larry Lawton if you want to learn about prison hierarchy and how life and business works on the inside.

How do you know they had fake Manchester United jerseys ?

Because it was the first big crime I followed daily, internet access was available and the case was covered extensively on BBC and other dependable news outlets. The jerseys were cheap replica tops bought from a market stall, not official club merchandise so in many reports they were described as fake or unofficial Manchester United jerseys. It was a big part of the investigation because they made the girls immediately recognisable.

    Why is this important?

I just knew that they were wearing Manchester United jerseys - don't see why the media felt the need to include that they were replica ones.

The Sun now reports that Huntley has been declared blind after being struck in the eyes. It is claimed that he is not expected to regain consciousness, reports the Mirror.

Well…. guess he will be gone soon

It would be fitting if he was to do a few years in hell on a life support machine!

They should sell tickets for the right to pull the plug & give the takings to the girl's families.

I’d say the police released that info. It was relevant if someone was later found dumped somewhere. In those circumstances the more detail available, the better.

It’s also quite poignant. Nearly every parent has bought their child a cheap football jersey at some stage when they are going through a phase of idolising a team or a sports hero. It’s a very ordinary childhood thing, which probably makes that small detail resonate with people even more.

Ian Huntley was given a mininuim 40 year sentence and he's basically been in jail since 2002. It's over half up.

The positive if he dies Holly & Jessica's families won't have to put up with him looking to be released.

Replica jerseys and fakes jerseys aren't the same thing. Replicas are the store-bought jerseys for fans that are designed to be washed and worn over and over again, so they're made from a more durable fabric. A replica is still an official jersey manufactured by the big clothing brands. The jerseys professional football players wear are designed for athletes and are often discarded after matches. These jerseys aren't designed to be durable and won't hold up well after multiple washes.

Fake jerseys are counterfeits. They're poorly made, different fabric. Stitching errors. Cheap. These are often found in outdoor market stalls.

Life support switched off. As Huntley's daughter said...

“There’s a special place in hell waiting for him.”

Glad he got to spent a few decades in jail before it happened at least.

I always felt his girlfriend at the time got away a bit lightly.

Apparently she’s married now with children of her own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,719 ✭✭✭Hangdogroad

She struck me as having learning difficulties, not very bright anyway. Similar to the partner and co accused of that "Shameless Mick" guy who killed a number of his own children in a fire.

she absolutely did get away lightly. She caused an awful lot of anguish to the parents. Definitely not the full shilling anyway.
