In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

You never get to see anyone back up Ray after his fall, poor aul Ray he just doesn't have the same true fans on boards like Tubs.

Perhaps the new Breakfast show host on Newstalk might put in a good word

Great to see such a gent make his way back to broadcasting with a podcast.

Ray D'Arcy Daily should be good, 5 days a week.

I'd have called it Ray's Rave TBH or but I am sure there are many on boards that would call it D'Arcy's A**e!

You know he will have that back in a day. He's just epic. One of the most beloved broadcasters in the land.

Waiting for the first episode where he realises an hour in to the programme he'd pressed the end stream button

Why all this hate, he's raised money through his Park Runs, I saw him the other day visiting an old woman after she was sued by Pat Kenny, he so kind, great man, and not once mentioned in that RTÉ report about the pay scandal, he had nothing to do with it, didn't even get a taxi home.

A daily podcast is a difficult challenge especially when he won't have the support of a radio station to churn content. The other problem is that people will have to seek him out and I just don't see his style of radio as being particularly engaging.

Maybe it will work for him and he does have the advantage of an existing profile starting out but the podcast space is extremely crowded. Maybe he will do something to surprise, maybe deep dives into crime or something us but if it's just his radio show as a podcast then I can't see it working. Or at least having a payoff that's worth the effort.

Best of luck to him. No more than Tubs, he will find out exactly what he is worth.

    Ray who?

I'm joking. If he had some sense of humour he'd take a leaf out of the book that is Gift Grub and call it Radio Ray.

Your telling me you wouldn't have agree to that kind of money that RTÉ was handing out :)

Ray has one of the best senses of humour of all the great broadcasters, remember The Den, It's should have been D'Arcy's Den!

A few times over the last 3 or so years Ive thought about doing a weekly youtube channel thingy. Research in the area has suggested you should do a minimum of ten, ideally at least twenty episodes before your first episode, so that if something comes up and can't do a show on a given week, like Bridies Christening is in 3 weeks and I know I'll not be in a suitable state for your viewing pleasure 4 days after it, you have an episode to release.

A daily podcast is a different kettle of fish. Some days there will be massive earth shattering global phenomena, and other days there will be nothing to report. He'll have to ramble on for an hour about whatever pops into his head. On the one hand, there is no-one more suited to that kind of format. On the other hand, a podcast is not the same as just flicking on the radio to whatever station it's usually tuned to and listening to Ray ramble. A podcast has to be sought out, looked for, found, subscribed to. How many people are going to put in that effort to listen to Ray ramble?

I wouldn't. Ray was pure commodity radio. The only thing that made it distinctive was his inability to use the mixing desk and I don't think that warrants a premium.

The thing is, the odd time he could do a decent interview (better than tubs), particularly when he was interested himself in the topic. So I hope it works out for him. I don't think he will get back to the frothy wages of rte when he's podcasting but best of luck to him

I'm a 25 stone, 6'10" truck driver and I had to pull over to cry about this news. I'm now dancing in the cab and don't care who sees me.

The only subject the boy D’Arcy is anyway comfortable with is music.

Kinda makes a daily podcast kind of constricting, one would surmise?

These so called superstar broadcasters who Rte paid vast sums of money for over the years are suddenly finding out that without the teat of Rte to suckle at, they are not in demand.

Instead they look around for jobs, and find the only thing open to them is doing a podcast or YT show. To add to the millions of podcasts out there already, what do they believe they bring new to the genre that is going to make people make the effort to tune in?

Ray is a bit of a bore. Hes a 61yr old grumpy white man, so unless he uses that as an angle for his show, I feel this could be an embarrassing thing for him to try.

Its already been shown that his much more famous 52yr old ex Rte giant cant bring in any more than a few thousand views. Ray would be better looking at early retirement. Hes done well with his limited ability, move over and let the younger ones at it.

Ray is one of the most trusted broadcasters in the country. He'll be off in the UK in no time at all. He be at some dinner and meet the wife of some property millionaire and she'll tell him to sponsor this new podcast.

I see no reason why Ray won't be back on RTÉ soon enough, trust me they will come back begging.

Do you not remember him on Jo Maxi, great show, was nothing when he left and then he took over The Den from another great Irish broadcaster Ian Dempsey.

You'd not miss an episode of Blackboard Jungle back in the day.

(How do they keep this up 😂)

so he's not coming to mid-mornings or afternoons on RTE Gold then ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭GSF

I’m sure he could in theory do both - maybe the €50k a year from Rte doesn’t seem so bad now ?

That was what i am wondering. It was reported on Boards a week or so ago Raymond was starting on RTE Gold in March.

Is there any particular production company or distributor behind it ?

The Jenny and Mairead shows seem to be a Bauer Media distributed…

Ray D'Arcy seems to live off the "fame" from The Den 35 years ago.

He's out in the open now.

Obviously no UK or other Irish broadcaster wanted him. Again underlining the ridiculousness of the salary he was getting.
