Rotella was on the putting green with him before he started last night.

Anywhere left on 16 would have been ok, with his short game he would likely make par.

Likewise on 17 though the shock of the iron shot on 16 was in his grey matter so I can understand that one.

1 over for those 2 holes and he wins, probably could have made bogey on both as 18 is a good birdie chance.

So disappointing from him as from the 5th to the 15th, I have never seen him putt so well.

No I want to know your description not a dictionary explanation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,758 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

As I said, if he has someone helping him then he needs a change.

Next stop after Rotella is religious intervention:)

Golf is tough, having 2 bad shots would have been ok but not in the drink.

Focus on the brilliant performance up to the 16th tee and move on, no reason he cannot win this year.

If you don't think he choked last night, I am perfectly happy for you to hold that opinion. Or if we have different opinions about what it means to choke, or if choking doesn't necessarily mean you're a choker etc….I've seen all this play out here before on various threads. As I said….

I'll pass on that, thanks - I have no appetite to get into pedantry with you.

And if you don't think it is or will become pedantry, I am equally happy for you to hold that opinion.

So you are afraid to describe what choking means to you for some reason? Are you afraid you'll "choke" if you try and describe what your definition of it is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,784 ✭✭✭BoardsMember

With that kind of post, maybe you can see why I have no interest in engaging with a warrior as brave as you? Afraid? Frankly, I'm terrified.

(edit: I'm so terrified you're now on ignore)

In the context of last night, Shane knew on the 16th tee that the only destructive shot was right, he could have gone 100 yards left & a par was still position. Similarly on 17th, right was the only destructive shot.

Under that pressure, it is not unreasonable for the body to freeze on a swing. I am not a professional golfer:) though I can relate to the feeling:)

Which of his many team mates were choking?

    Name them please.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,603 ✭✭✭dublin49

the word "choke" has negative connotations and is subjective.

Harrington would definitely have been accused of it in 2007 Open with DB on 18 but he won playoff.

If Lowrys 3rd at 18 had rolled into hole and he won playoff would that still be a choke.

Lots of winners stumble over the line ,but if you win no matter what you do you are not accused of choking.

The Bear pit is renowned for a reason,it applies pressure at the key moment in the tournament ,it got to Lowry,

Another day it doesnt, winning is tough ,I like he faced the press and fessed up.Could be cathartic for him.

As Shane showed last night, we dont always get what we want in this life.

Is the issue with Shane’s swing? Is it all down to timing and if timing is off then issues kick in. Is it a bit wristy. So if some tension creeps in then he’s hitting it right as timing off getting back. Could be totally wrong but just an idea

I don’t think you need an explanation you had video evidence of it in full flow last night. The pressure of the situation got to him, his swing left him. He put two balls in the water. He missed the target by quite some margin.

How else would you describe it, just two bad shots, bad luck ? He is not the first golfer to choke and won’t be the last. Hopefully he can come back stronger after last night.

Can't believe there's a debate as to whether he choked last night - of course he did.

It doesn't make him a bad person - just someone who hit some really terrible shots when under immense pressure.

    It happens.

One thing is certain, Shane Lowry has shown a lot more class and dignity, post round, than many posters.

Glad Shane spoke to the media afterwards, that was the mature thing to do. Hard to know what to make of his comments though; saying that he didnt get ahead of himself whilst clearly entertaining the fantasy of his 4 year old embracing him in a victory hug on the 18th green for most of the round doesnt really compute.

Id be a bit worried about his self deprication also; for a sportsman to admit that they are 'getting good' at throwing away tournaments on camera, whether it was said to relieve some tension or otherwise, is certainly not what Bob Rotella or any sports psychologist would advocate.

Ah look, Im devastated he lost the way he did. The shot on 15 was so unbelievably pure that I really thought he was going to bring this one home. Hope Im wrong but am finding it hard now to envisage what circumstances need to align for him to actually get the job done in a tournament.

Harrington has admitted that...he fell over the line and that's why he enjoyed Birkdale so much more as he all the golf that weekend and he couldn't be Begrudged of it.

SL is one of the best golfers this country has ever produced and seems to be a relatively down to Earth guy.

Golf is a tough game, we know this as similiar has happened in the past with him but he's also given us some incredible moments over the years. This is just another bump in the road, granted a very very positive bump, still finished second, generally played very well, made some money and some points. He's already started the year better than he has started the past few and I have no doubt he has enough in the pocket to get a win or two this year. And if he doesn't he will still have a great year no doubt.

It's annoying for us to see what happened yesterday, and obviously very annoying for him. It's rather strange that the found the water twice but sure looking, thats golf.

Shane had a 96.7% of winning, it wasn't the Masters with a star studded field chasing him. He choked and he'll know that more than anyone.

Does anything in life exist outside of time?

What is time? Human construct? Cosmic?

Pressure got to him, nothing more nothing less. Happens to everyone regardless of profession.

I found it hard to envisage Rory winning another major after what happened him 2014 but he did it and I suspect Shane will be the same. I wouldn't be surprised if it was in a big one as well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,687 ✭✭✭Benicetomonty

2014? When he won two majors?

Hope you're right about Shane, love watching him play. Lot of scar tissue building up at this stage though, between the two tournaments this year and a couple of events on the PGA Tour last year. I'd include the Open at Troon in '24 as a significant loss for Shane also, finished the Saturday very poorly from memory even with some hairy weather. He has a legitimate question mark over him now and it will only be addressed in one way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,555 ✭✭✭PokeHerKing

Yeah most likely one were he comes from the chasing pack on a Sunday.

I dont think leading like that going intp the bear trap plays to his strengths. Like most Irish people hes much more familiar with being the underdog and punching above his weight.

He's likely to contend again this week. It would be the perfect time after what happened last weekend. He'll have leaned from that and another big performance this week could see him get over the line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,603 ✭✭✭dublin49

I think he will be fine psychologically for next few weeks as he is going to be playing in a different league and unlikely be trying to defend a big lead.

Agree, keep an eye out for him as FRL this week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,968 ✭✭✭Trampas

Solid start but a right mix bag on the back 9

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,014 ✭✭✭DellyBelly

    Poor round unfortunately....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,526 ✭✭✭Barnaboy

Poor start, especially back 9. Only 10 players in the field behind him. If it was a cut week he would be having the weekend off.
