In Texas Democratic primaries, State Rep. Talarico is asked by a cowboy about his criticism of billionaires. He's asked how is this not class warfare. Talarico replies that there is already class warfare for 50 years, and that its by the billionaires.

Trump claimed to have destroyed all facilities for nuclear weapons last year.

They grew back quicker than his ear

    I suppose it should read

    Bored of Peace ?

Apologies if this has been done to death, as Trump said to the General 🫣

I think Trump was hoping thus would be another Maduro 'weekend war'.

Go in, take out the leader, claim victory, and tell everyone that new leader is bowing down to you.

Thing is Venezuela was very weak, isolated, andcouldn't do anything about it. Even then old regime are still there just occasionally sucking up to Trump.

Iran is weak, but can retaliate a bit, and with the Hormuz Straits has an area that can influence a lot globally. The Iran regime is also not as secure as the Venezuelan regime, which paradoxically makes them more dangerous. They know their hold over the population is tenous, so by being weak now they could be overthrown. So have less wiggle room to back down.

This suits Israel, as a weak, divided Iran scrambling for survival, reduces the flow of funds to Hamas and Hezbullah, while also committing the US (and their Gulf State allies) to sharing the load in fighting, and being the targets of Irans response (ie not every rocket is heading at Israel)

Trump really hopes the Iranians rise up, as no way on earth are ground troops going in, but Iran is now legitimately under martial law, so that regime- which was already happy enough to kill protesters, now has an excuse to be even more brutal.

So this could simmer on for a long time with rockets and bombs going both ways, with no major ground fighting. Oil prices could rocket, Dubai and all, will see their profits and tourism dry up, as well as occasional destruction, so will get narky. While Iran gets slowly pummelled.

Can't see it being a 'weekend war'

Was thinking along those lines until Iran lobbed a bomb into Saudi Arabia earlier today. The Saudis are no fans of the Iranians and Trump done a big weapons deal with them in May 2017. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Saudis get involved here and they have probably the biggest and most sophisticated military in the ME.

How stable are any of those ME countries (eg SA) when push comes to shove?

    I thought Syria was stable....

They're also probably the most volatile, 15 of the 9/11 hijackers were from there. None were from Iraq, Iran or Afghanistan.

"even as we continue the righteous mission " ....what ?

He as a President does not have the right to start a war , that decision as far as I know is only for Congress to make .

President can not take action unilaterally unless there is an immediate threat to the US .

They have not even been consulted or given any justification for this so called righteous mission .

Can it even be stopped now that Iran has started firing back ?

No democracy or transparency in American politics with this dictator in power . And US military injured and loss of life in what is potentially an illegal act by Trump .

He doesn't even care , as seen in that video slurring his speech , has he been celebrating ?

Most of the countries in the ME are either outgrowths of colonial shenanigans by France or Britain, ore used to be their protectorates. Syria, Lebanon, Jordan Iraq and Saudi Arabia were all created in the aftermath of WW1 when Paris and London carved up the carcass of the Ottoman Empire. they were created at the drawing room table with little regard as to the people that were actually living there. As a result, the people living in places like Syria, Jordan, Lebanon or Iraq often felt more loyalty to their clan than they did to the central government of their country, which led to massive internal conflicts the moment the central government looked like it might loosen it's grip. We've seen that in Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq already. Jordan seems to be keeping it together pretty well for the moment, but it remains to be seen whether it can survive the death of the current king, especially since his wife, Queen Rania, is Palestinian and as such gives the monarchy quite a bit of influence in the Palestinian refugee community in Jordan.

Saudi Arabia is somewhat different in that they have fewer internal ethnic fault lines than the other countries. The role of the house of Saud in the Arab rebellion, its unbroken rule for over a century at this point, and the fact that Islam's holiest sites are all in Saudi territory all provide a unifying element that isn't present in many of the other countries in the region. Having said that, Saudi Arabia is far more theocratic than any other country in the region, its political culture is pretty much non-existent, and the royal family has managed to keep control of the country primarily by splashing its oil cash onto the population, combined with a ruthless approach to internal dissent. The biggest threat for Saudi Arabia is running out of oil, since its economy is dependent on it. When the oil goes, it's anyone's guess as to what happens to Saudi Arabia but chances are, it's going to be bloody.

Ironically, the two countries least likely to tear themselves apart are Israel and Iran. Israel is effectively a western political and social system that has been grafted onto the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, so it doesn't have much, if anything, in common with its neighbours.

Iran is another matter again. The country has existed as a unit in some way, shape or form since antiquity. It was never colonised and has a clearly defined national identity going back centuries. Whilst there are ethnic minorities present in Iran that have at times tried to break away from the country, from what I can see, these ethnic fault lines are nowhere near as severe as in many of the other countries in the region. That doesn't mean that there won't be a power struggle when/if the Islamic regime falls, but those conflicts will likely take place amongst different power blocks in the government (Armed Forces vs. Revolutionary Guards vs. Police/Secret Police) rather than, say, Persians against Kurds against Azerbaijanis.

At least that's my take on it.

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

Starmer announced that the US can use UK bases to strike Iran before returning to man the glory hole in the Israeli embassy.

Says it is because of the 200000 or so British expats out there living and working . They need to keep the US onside in case it goes pear shaped …further .

But how cringe after the way Trump has treated his " special friends " and allies in Europe .

DOJ seeking to charge another 9 people in a sealed (secret) indictment related to the protest at the church where a pastor was an ICE official. The WH is using a "religious freedom" law to prosecute Don Lemon, the journalist who was there, and others.

Georgia's State Election Board has concluded that voter-related violations occurred involving America PAC, a political action committee linked to billionaire Elon Musk, according to official findings issued following a state investigation into the 2024 election cycle.

Congratulations to Governor Kemp (R ) for not being swayed by partisanship when it comes to election integrity, just like 2020.

The decision arrives amid a separate federal investigation that prompted an FBI raid on election facilities in Fulton County, deepening tensions between state and federal authorities over election integrity claims. Together, the developments mark one of the most consequential post-2024 election enforcement actions involving a major political donor organisation.

State Election Board Investigation Finds Improper Ballot Applications

The Georgia State Election Board voted to issue a formal reprimand after determining that America PAC distributed absentee ballot applications that were partially prefilled with voters' personal information, conduct restricted under Georgia election law.

According to board chairman John Fervier, the inquiry began in October 2024 after residents across multiple counties reported receiving ballot request forms that appeared already completed. Investigators concluded that the mailers violated state statutes prohibiting third parties from sending electors pre-completed absentee ballot applications unless authorised relatives were involved.

Trump is definitely afraid of the capital markets. It looks like he waits for the weekends for major actions. I wonder if this war is protracted and has unintended market impacts, if he might taco this war also.

I don't see too many countries offering refugee status to the outgoing Iranian Shia Government in any case so it may well be a fight to the death locally in Teheran and other Shia centres anyway.
