It is the final day of meteorological winter as I'm typing this so time to open the spring 2026 thread.

The first day looking to start off poor with outbreaks of rain and fresh southerly winds on Sunday March 1st. However, the week ahead then is looking like a big improvement on the past few months with a ridge of high pressure building from the Azores from Tuesday. The initial ridge looks rather weak so perhaps more showery for a time from the west later in the week but the pattern looks favourable to further ridging being possible thereafter giving promise of a good March ahead.

No doubt some will get uneasy with the prospects of a lovely March and we'll pay for it in summer down the line. Let's try and enjoy it whilst it's here after the horror show of the past few months (once Sunday is out of the way that is). In recent years, we've had lovely Marches in 2021, 2022 and 2025 and all those summers were better than average by Ireland standards.

If we get a spring half as good as the historic 2025 last year then I'll be happy with that.

Decent blustery day so far, pity the clocks didn't go forward last night.

Full wetgear for today's walk. The "windmills" are loving it!

We have got lucky for once here on East Coast today.

Looks like it's going to lash all day but rain has held off so far.

Give it a hour! Very heavy drizzle now in Greystones. Very wetting!

Oh I'm sure it's coming but feel lucky that we managed to get out and about for the few hours.

Whoops we are over here in Spring.

Not so much rain as I expected yet here in Meath.

9am running for an hour; had light rain for a short time during it.

Not exactly a tempting afternoon for out and about. Grey, breezy, threatening clouds .....but dry.

Rain visible on the various GAA coverage; venues Donegal & Kilkenny

Very misty, damp and gusty in Cork harbour.

Thankfully got all the hedges clipped before nesting.

March looks mild for 1st half and drier overall but no completely.

Most of rain on Atlantic counties. Way drier in East than Winter.

Winter cold looks gone on charts. Maybe a flip after Paddys day. Colder 2nd half but the FI weather is always cold.

Today 6.3mm so far in Sligo 15mm in the West.

No sizeable amounts for rest of week.

I just did a quick tot of the rainfall figures at my local station since the last week of August, when the summer drought gave way to endless rain. The station gets 1000-1100 mm of rain in an average year. It has got almost 840mm in 6 months. And this has by no means been the wettest part of the country.

Not a great start to Spring in Greystones. Heavy drizzle since around midday. 5.0mm so far.

Washout here near Tralee, 13.0 mm, raining practically all day, mild though getting up to 12.6C and currently 8.3C, at least not too much rain apart from a few showers up until Weds evening.

A bird's eye views of a couple of sleeping swans on the Dargel estuary in Bray today. Another damp, wet day.

I remember we had it in Dublin as well. Everywhere snowed under...for a few hours !

I remember that event too, here in Meath it was cold, cold rain all the way while Dublin got the snow.

Beautiful Spring afternoon in Galway. I think you have to endure a hard winter to really enjoy the summer. I am getting giddy now thinking of all the light returning. Clocks change in 4 weeks.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Fantastic weather finally, mild and with barely any wind. Daffodils out, winter can feck right off for a while thanks.

Hard frost around Celbridge/Maynooth this morning and -2. Wasn't expecting it, and there's a good bit of black ice after the drizzle yesterday evening. Paths are lethal!
