Is Beirne injured? Don't mind him not starting but thought he'd be on the 26.

Wouldn't mind seeing Livingston get some gametime before the end of the league

Beirne has played every game so far, definitely no harm giving him a day off. I'd say that's all it is.

We need to see how McHale gets on, he looked very good in Sigerson so would be great if he came through as another real option.

I'd agree re Livingston, if Hennelly gets injured or goes out of form (starts dropping high balls again, signs were there v Monagahan) then the replacement needs to have played some bit of ball before being thrown in to championship.

When will Ruane be back I wonder. He might not get a starting spot - there's no way Tuohy can be dropped with the form he's in. McBrien has to play as well, it's just a question of whether to stick with at midfield or move him back to CHB or even full back.

I'm not sure how it won that award as it's quite bare when you see it up close and not many games have been played on it. It has a very high sand content. The Roscommon pitch surface looks much better.

Insurance has to be a factor. Its supposed have been the reason the barbed wire on the perimeter fence was removed years ago after a large claim payout when a child got caught in it.

If they want to stop pitch invasions, pay for a few more stewards and get that orange netting you see in croker and the Aviva.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭Westernview

Thats not really viable at provincial level with lower attendances than croke park. It takes a lot of stewards to work that system.

it’s 90% kids and the rest is made up of their parents looking to make sure they don’t lose their kids. The kids will just run around the stewards and unless more volunteer to be stewards then it’s near impossible to keep them off. A few parents might take heed and then when other kids do run on, it becomes a free for all.

So good idea to ask patrons to remain off the pitch but it’s doomed to fail.

If mcbrien stays in MF, I'd probably put Ruane at 10 ahead of Carney

Thank you for the link. Kerry have another version of Clifford coming through

If our defence continues to leak soft goal & points ,it might be best to put O Brien back in defence to shore things up , and Ruane back into his preferred midfield role especially against the top teams, but its great that we have real options moving forward.

Defence seems to be gradually improving. Coyne and McHugh are catching up after long layoffs.

Goalkeeper is an issue IMO. The Monaghan goal last week was a reminder of how vulnerable Hennelly can be to high balls.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81 ✭✭Vish81

Its his decision making rather than his ability to actually catch imo.

Comes out then back-peddles leaving himself in no-man's land, so its something that can be eradicated by good GK coaching, and better communication with defenders in front of him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭Westernview

Yes decision making. Thats what happened in 2021 final for one of the goals. Stayed on his line and at the last minute came out and got caught in no man's land. His shot stopping has improved but needs to be secure under high ball.

Very good win, sounded like we struggled a bit at MF

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭Westernview

Good win in difficult conditions. Dug it out after Armagh onslaught. Kobe probably made the difference at the end.

Touhy is having to do too much at midfield. McBrien is not a fielder.

Callinan is much more physical this year...breaking tackles and cutting through defence lines. Loftus very good until he had to go off.

Mayo ladies beaten, no quick return to D1 unfortunately

It sounded like we lived off scraps for most of that game. To come out the right side of the result in those circumstances was a positive but you'll win nothing worthwhile under the new rules if you can't compete for primary possession.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭Westernview

When the pitches harden up we may see Kobe starting in the half forwards to act as a 3rd midfielder. Byrne and McHale are around longer and a bit older but they wont provide that primarily possession element. So id keep one or both of them on the bench.

The first ball Kobe took down today from the kickout shows he can operate around there at this level.

Difficult to know where we are. Our midfield is not up to standard right now, always feel we're very prone at the back and championship fare is a different animal entirely to this league. Donegal showed us up and nothing we could do about it in fairness. Apart from Monahan we might well have lost every other game. Thankfully we didn't. Personally feel a Connacht final will be an achievement in 2026.

I think this is very true.

The real test of Mayo is how they do against real contenders like Donegal and Kerry.

Good form in the league, and especially early on in the league can mask a lot of issues.

They obviously lost to Donegal and will face a Kerry team that will probably have all their guys back and looking for game time, a Kerry team closer to champship ready than the one you might meet in late January.

How Mayo get on in Tralee will be a good weathervane.

A Connacht win would be great and a quarter final spot after good performances a bonus.

Good building blocks for next year.

Would agree that it'll be hard tell where we are versus others. I see potential in that midfield but maybe in a couple of years, very unusual that a brand new pairing (with both of them relatively inexperienced) will be up to scratch. I think a few got a bit too carried away with the performance vs Monaghan (a decent club side would have put up a similar test).

What I do like is the way we are playing, and Andy can't really control much other than that. If other teams are better, so be it. He's brought confidence and a style of play that we badly needed after the few years under McStay. He has identified the need to get a few more forwards in there and if Beirne and McHale come out of this as real viable options, then he'll have done well.

Connaught will be the most realistic goal for the year, and it'll be an achievement because Galway and the Rossies are ticking along alright as well.

We are far from the finished article but an impressive statistic. Bodes well for a right tilt at Connacht.

It is…… considering the crack that we were at last year. It is great to see a consistent attitude towards having a crack at them. It's very early days yet, but the next two games will give an indication to what is achievable especially the Kerry game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 887 ✭✭✭eastie17

the real test was supposed to be how we got on against Armagh. Now that we passed that then I guess we need to find another.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 96 ✭✭Compo82

I thought Kobe might be be used as an impact sub this year but after watching him on Sunday, I think he needs to start come championhip. He did a lot more in 20 mins than some of the starters including Towey and O'Shea. Mayo also wouldn't have won that game without him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,931 ✭✭✭irishgeo

He will be available for Connacht but with the All Ireland championship starting in June at the same time as his leaving cert. I can't see him playing those ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,927 ✭✭✭muddle84

There's no exams on Saturdays and Sundays, he will be there!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,123 ✭✭✭Barlett

Yeah to be honest I wouldn’t be reading anything into the Kerry game, won that one last year and it mattered little. I’ll be surprised if Beirne & McDonald travel to it with U20s in action three days later, so even with those two missing , it’ll change our set up .

Swap Mayo and Donegal and that table is the league table
