Flying long haul via Istanbul

Anyone flown someplace via Istanbul airport in the last few months?
Checking flights and some options have a stopover of 65 minutes or 90 minutes, which seems really short and too risky.
Next option is over 4 hours layover, which I think is do-able (look at the museum in the airport, maybe get a massage…)
Third option is to book a longer layover and visit Istanbul as part of the flight booking - was in the city years ago and enjoyed it, I'm guessing this will be what the authorities in Türkiye want you to see, but still might be alright.

"If you have an international flight connecting in Istanbul with a layover between 6 and 24 hours, you can explore Istanbul with our complimentary TourIstanbul service. You can visit historical sites in the city and sample Turkish cuisine in one of eight distinctive Touristanbul routes."

Any feedback or recent experiences welcome!

Yes, and will never do it again. Turkish are the worst airline I've ever flown with bar none.

That aside, the airport is massive and very expensive but the biggest issue is the gates only being posted an hour or less before departure. That might not seem a problem but we landed at the far opposite end of the airport from where our flight would ultimately board and when the gate was posted we had to absolutely leg it to get there, it took 15-20 minutes or maybe longer, by which time boarding was final call. So stressful.

I flew twice with them to Taiwan last year and it was a terrible experience.

Outbound to Istanbul was delayed on runway by 2 hours so missed my connection to Taipei. That didn’t matter as the Taipei flight was delayed anyway by 8 hours. Return journey delayed in Taipei again by 6 hours so again missed connection to Dublin.

Another guy in my company did the same trip around same time and had same experience

When I was there the airport was full of people waiting on delayed connections. Nowhere to sit, 1 free water station and the most expensive airport I have ever transited through.

Thanks for all the warnings. I've actually assumed otherwise, as Turkish always had an excellent reputation as an airline. Maybe things changed for the negative, also with the new airport they've built.

My wife uses it twice a year and really likes it.

I've connected twice in the new Istanbul airport. The most recent time was only last week.

I had no issues whatsoever. The Turkish flights were on time with comfortable seats, nice meals and IFE.

The connection experience was fine. My connection was 2 hours but I was through security and at the next gate in about 30 minutes.

I'd heard that it's really expensive so didn't even look at the prices. They have plenty of water fountains at least.

Flown Turkish airlines several times. Thankfully have not experienced any issues with them

Flew through Istanbul with Turkish in July and honestly loved them. We’d booked a 90-minute layover to Baku, but the flight into Dublin was delayed, so they cancelled our original connection and moved us onto the next IST–BAK flight three hours later. Ironically, when we landed in Istanbul the gates were literally beside each other and we would’ve made the original flight in the end. We even tried our luck getting on, but our seats had already been given away.

So… a few hours stuck in the airport instead. And it’s expensive — €18 for a bottle of Corona 😵‍💫

Coming home was similar: short layover, slight delay leaving Baku, and we landed in Terminal D with the onward flight from F, which meant going through security again. Stressful as ****.

Long story short, I wouldn’t attempt anything under two hours.

No issues with Turkish Airlines.90 minutes ok for transfer,65 could be pushing it.TA probably allow for 45 minutes transfer time Much prefer the old airport.New one is austere, empty and expensive(prices in Euros due currency fluctuations)

I fly TK very regularly. They show you connecting gates on the IFE just before landing in IST, they're also available on the app well before shown in the airport.

Had a connection of 70 minutes last week. Landed early and had time to go to the lounge for a meal and a drink before the next flight.

Just to add from Ireland, if you have a connecting flight you should go straight to departures on arrival in Istanbul.

From certain countries you have to reclear security but there are plenty of short transit security checkpoints if your connection is less than 90 minutes on the walk to the main security point.

I've flown TA a few times. No real issues, lovely airport etc. My only problem is that if you're going long haul - I find the 4-5 hours to Istanbul not long enough to settle down, watch movies etc (and it's a low cost option so don't think there were seat back TVs or anything to Istanbul), but it's still long enough. And then you have a long leg left if going to Asia. I like either one quick hop to Paris / London / Amsterdam and then a proper long leg I can fall asleep on. Or else two long-ish flights through the middle East with comfier seats/TVs. I'd only go Istanbul if it were significantly cheaper or the times really suited.

Flying Turkish is great, connecting in Instanbul on a short stopover is tough.
you will need to go through security again, it may take 2 minutes or it may take 2 hours.

But my experience is flash your boarding card to the security guy and the priority lane and they normally help you out.

You normally do not need to re-clear security in Istanbul from Dublin. I haven't in the last 20 or so trips I've taken.

Turkish airlines does have IFE in the flights from Dublin including WiFi. Pretty much all their aircraft have IFE

    Depends where you're going.
Most of my flights were Dub - Riyadh and i had to do it both ways, but some flights being Dub- Tbilisi and also had to do it both ways

It shouldn't depend on the destination but the arrival airport. Unless you're talking about the secondary security screen at the gates.

Yep, sorry didnt realise that wasnt clear. I've been stuck there for over an hour a few times.

Thank you for all the info.

Flights booked, 90 minutes transfer on the way to UGC but not the end of the world if we miss the second flight. I'll be checking the gates used for the flights for a few days before I go, so I have an idea of what gate I might land in and then depart from. Four hours layover on the return. Hoping no delays on the return so I can go to the concert in St Annes Park!

I was in the airport about a month after it opened and it really felt soulless - seems to be more "stuff" there now.

If you miss your connection with Turkish Airlines and it's their fault. Make sure to check your app, there'll be a €20/25 food voucher there for the layover.

Which will get you roughly one and a half sandwiches 😀 Expensive airport even by airport standards.

yes did it a few weeks ago , 60 minute transfer , no security clearance and no problem. you can check the gate before landing on their entertainment system.

flights were absolutely jammed every leg with variable service but fine overall . the airport is crazy expensive but easy to get metro to taksim if you have 6 or 7 hours and get food or shopping

Like others said, it's crazy expensive.

When you land in Turkey there's always people at the gate and will help people with their connecting flight under 90 mins. I've made multiple flights with 65 minute layover, but it is a bit of a stressful run.

Yes,required old and new airport.Once not security in new airport

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 575 ✭✭✭user060916

Strange, in maybe 50 flights through the new airport from Dublin I've never had to re-clear security.

Except the secondary searches at gates for some destinations like US and UK

From Dublin I don't think I've gone through security at Istanbul but from Abu Dhabi I have. And I can never get my boarding pass online from Abu Dhabi side, always need to go to the counters.
