Bridgeman had the gap out to 7 shots after 3 holes. But he's dropped a shot on 4 to reduce it back to 6 shots. Both players had birdied the first hole. Rory had a chance to eagle the first and birdie the 4th just there, but started both efforts outside the hole when they seemed like straight putts.

Rory has gone left on the 5th with his drive now, Bridgeman finds the fairway.

McIlroy has dropped a shot on the 6th. His short par putt caught the left edge. One birdie on the first, all pars and now the bogey. His putting hasn't been awful, but it's not been great either. He's not putting any pressure on Bridgeman, at all.

WTF is Rory doing? His reading on his putts are terrible. It was a straight putt, the commentators said so. He started it out left and is surprised when it stays out left. He's had 3 straight putts today and read breaks that weren't there. He remains 6 behind.

Another opportunity missed. If he holed 1/3 of his 5-10ft putts he'd probably be right there with Bridgeman. Needs to see something drop soon, and hope for a slip up or two from the leader.

Rory has missed another birdie putt on 9. The gap remains at 6. The commentators are reading various stats about Rory's putting today and they're all damning. He's had ample opportunity to close the gap by at least 4. Bridgeman has done nothing either, both are level par today.

Bridgeman doesn't need to do anything. Level today will do it for him. Rory's putting yesterday and so far today is not good enough for this level

    Super bunker shot from Mac

What a pitch from the bunker on 12! In for birdie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,028 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Rory needed that, and more. That's a massive chip in, and it was such a difficult shot too from the bunker. Moves him to -15. 4 shots behind now. That is such a bonus after an awful drive.

Shout out for Greyserman's hole-in-one on the 14th too, right before Rory's pitch in.

What a golf shot from Tommy for eagle

Bridgeman got so lucky with his drive on 13. It hit the trees and bounced into the fairway. That could have gone horribly wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,028 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

McIlroy will do well to get par after finding that bunker on 14. He was close to getting away with the drive, but didn't. Bridgeman made bogey from there yesterday.

So, the fun begins. Leader either has it, or doesn't. So far he's ok but has to be nervous from here on in. Be great if Mc gets a birdie or two but luck hasn't been with him in this tournament

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,028 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Didn't expect Rory to make that par putt. And he went from bunker to bunker on the 15th. That was good all things considered. He still needs to make some birdies and hopes Bridgeman falters over the last few holes.

That's going to be an awkward bunker shot for Bridgeman on the 16th par 3.

Jesus, the putter has been brutal for McIlroy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,028 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

So close for Rory on that birdie putt, but it never had enough pace. That's probably his chances done, even though Bridgeman will drop a shot here. It's Kitayama now that's the danger man to Bridgeman.

Savage birdie putt by Rory on 18. Too little, too late. If that putt on 16 had rolled another inch.

Ah sure, there's lots of ifs and buts.

Crazy enough there was only 1 shot in it at the end. Bridgeman limped over the line. If Rory had got anything to drop on the front nine he'd probably have won it.

Bridgeman wins by one from McIlroy and Kitayama. Kitayama can't complain, he played a great final round. Rory will have regrets, he left a lot of shots out there yesterday and today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 323 ✭✭joficeduns1

Very fine margins in golf, Bridgeman earned it with a stellar first three rounds. Nerves showed today (especially leaving that 3+ foot short on 18).

Plenty of positives to take for Rory, driving and iron work in pretty good shape. His usually good putting left him all weekend and he was still within a shot of the lead. His bunker play is elite, and I think he lead the field in bogey avoidance which is a massive plus. Bodes well for the rest of the season, as well as returns to Riviera for upcoming major and Olympic events.

See that guy David Ford yesterday? Had a 7 on a par 3. Played next 3 holes in -4 with zero putts! Holed out from fairway for 2 consecutive eagles follow by a bunker shot to save par. He looks like a wild golfer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,526 ✭✭✭Barnaboy

Not true about zero putts, but pretty wild holing out two holes in a row! Just had a look and he is doing OK today. Right on cut line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 323 ✭✭joficeduns1

Wasn't it zero putts? Fairway hole-out for eagle on 2 (his 11th), par-5 chip in for eagle on 3 (12th), then holed out from a bunker on 4?

Felt sorry for Valimaki yesterday. Not sure if coverage showed it but he hit a drive into the water, hit his drop into the water again about 30yd up, hacked his way up to two-putt for a quad-bogey. Tough shift.

We're getting great TV value out of the Irish players the last few weeks 😅

Will Reed get into players like canter did last year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 42,758 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I hope not. I despise all the sportswashers but I didn't like him before he went there with his cheating and lack of etiquette.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 323 ✭✭joficeduns1

I'd imagine his 12-month ban (expiring in August) excludes Reed from The Players.
