Lidl charging recycling deposit on bottles that can't be returned

When I contacted customer care they issued me with a 5 euro voucher that had to be used within 7 days, which I was annoyed about. It got me back more than I overpaid, but I thought a 7 day limit on money they overcharged was wrong. Didn't think it was worth arguing over though.

I'm just out of the same Lidl store again. As far as I can see, the issue seems to be contained to the zero cola bottles, but that's just from a quick look. The affected stock was still being sold. I found 2 bottles mixed in through that stock that could actually be returned. I spoke to a manger in the shop, and the shop was never made aware of the issue after I put in my complaint. They are currently removing the entire stock of zero cola from the shelves. So this issue is hopefully resolved in the Lidl I shop in. However I find it hard to believe they will have been the only store sent this stock, so still worth keeping an eye out.

That's a bit of a result, well done.

Clearly they were in the wrong.

Legally they can't sell the stock without charging a deposit or charge a deposit that can't be refunded.

In fairness to the manager, the look of shock that the bottles were for sale, turned to pure panic when she realised how long it's been going on. She said she's going to be following up with head office, so hopefully it will be fully sorted out

The best way out of it for them is to collect the lot from all ROI stores and send them to Newry or Enniskillen.

Just out of the same Lidl. Loads of stock without the return label mixed in with stock that has the return label. Spoke to the same manager as the last day. She said they keep sending the stock from the North even though they have reported it a few times. At this stage it's just blatant disregard for the regulations, so I'll be having a look online when I get home to see where I can report them.

No need to look it up. Contact your local authority. Councils have the responsibility to respond to this.

It's one thing the warehouse sending it out but she is knowingly putting it on sale fully aware that customers won't get their refund.

I was hoping to find contact details for a specific department or person, but couldn't come across any. I've sent in a complaint to the report it function on the councils website. Hopefully it was the right place to send it

Good luck with getting any results from Lidl HQ and most local cudnt be arsed. They won't correct self prices but cashiers might give a refund and call it a discount.

Councils - forget it.Too busy making up sick leave or next year's pay claim or too busy

Got an email back from council saying not our problem, report it to re-turn. I have emailed them, but not expecting a response. So basically there doesn't seem to be any reason for a store to bother complying with the scheme, and Lidl is clearly aware of that.

If Lidl or any other store are changing a deposit on non refundable containers they are guilty of an offence under the legislation.

The council are wrong, they are supposed to appoint a person to deal with enforcement of the scheme.

    See part IX below.

I've actually had a response from re-turn looking for any photos I have, and saying they are going to contact Lidl about it, so more than I was expecting to hear back. I don't know why this is annoying me so much. You'd swear I had nothing else to worry about.

That's fine but the Council are supposed to enforce the regulations.

It doesn't take long to send a few emails so it's not a question of not having anything else to worry about. It's possible to worry about multiple things at a time also. Reporting it is an important thing to do such that the public don't get even more disincentivised to return their goods the proper way.

I've had no reply from re-turn about some M&S cans that are logoed, charging deposit, and unknown on scan.

They can afford some more customer care staff.

I've sent an email back to the council asking them to clarify the regulations with a screenshot of the enforcement section attached.

Thurles in Tipp, although it would seem highly unlikely that it is store specific

Good. They are written down in law as the body responsible for this.

It always annoys me how simply they can reply saying "not our problem"

A council I know does the same for dogs, when they're very much an authorised body for the control of dogs.

Amazingly I've now gotten a reply from the council saying they have transferred my complaint to the environmental section and issued me with a case number. Absolutely ridiculous carry on

    Well done 👍

Quoting the legislation must have helped.

If they don't sort it out contact a Councillor.

That is what should have happened from the start, I was going to recommend CCing E.Complaints@epa.ie if they didn't as the EPA could force their hands under Section 63 of the EPA act, shocking stuff from some LAs.

Seems like it's a case of 'if we say it's not our problem or just ignore them, they'll forget about it'. Which is mad considering the push to have a buy in for the Return Scheme.

I've had another email from the council. One of there environmental enforcement officers has investigated my complaint and has been in contact with the manager of the Lidl store. The manager has been instructed to comply with the regulations, and the manager has assured them that going forward they will. Hopefully this is the end of the matter.

Good result if the manager complies. They can be arrogant when you point out an error
