I was talking from a fan perspective, surely it wasn't that hard to spot that?

I'd do the same if I was in his shoes and absolutely think he's making the best decision for himself.

Especially to play that awful game they play out there. it is nothing like gaelic football.

why did ciaran kilkenny come back from Australia?

That is some serious naivety. Clifford was almost definitely given money to stay. The GAA has lots of examples of it, but one that can't be arguing is Tony Griffin, he talks about it in his book, that a wealthy businessman paid him for the year to be a professional hurler. Not dressed up as promotions, or a desk job that he didn't have to come in to. Here is a bag of money for you not to have to work for this year. Like everything else with the GAA and the tax man, a blind eye is turned.

Did Tony Griffin actually say that he didn't pay tax on that big bag of money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 843 ✭✭✭RedDevil55

Did Kerry offer Mark O'Connor, Cillian Burke, Rob Monahan and Ben O'Connor money as well or was it just Clifford? What about other players on the Kerry panel that could have tried their luck in Australia but didn't take up the offer?

Maybe I'm naive but giving Clifford money opens a big can of worms.

Also, I don't think Clifford is suited to AFL in the same way other Irish lads are. They tend to pick the fast, athletic middle third players from Ireland. Clifford's outrageous ability at kicking the size 5 O'Neills ball wouldn't transfer over to AFL.

I think a Kilkenny situation is the best we can hope for. That he just doesnt like it.

Cillian McDaid is another example but he had a nightmare few years with injury following his experience which you would not wish on anyone.

You would hope Ciaran has been in contact with the likes of McDaid and Marty Clarke, as will as the lieks of Pearce Hanley, before making thier decision.

I actually think Aussie Rules would be a bit wasted on his skills. Like where is he going to be kicking frees or 45 off the ground or scoring goals like against Monaghan. Yes, he might make it in Aussie Rules but his skills be lost to an awful game which requires more athletes than skillful players.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭Westernview

I think most of us here agree on that. The skillset is far narrower. Its more about athleticism and physicality than anything. Not a great spectator sport based on what Ive heard. The professional aspect and living in a warm climate is the big selling point. Putting the 2 games side by side theres no conparsion in terms of entertainment and skills level, especially since the new rules came in.

The skills are his to do with what he wants, whether they're wasted or not is up to him to decide!! I don't buy into him owing a club or county board, he has got his skill to the level they are at by countless hours training on his own or more than likely with his Dad. You don't get that good without a **** ton of talent and even more practice on your own outside any training that your club and county is giving you.

He showed what he is capable of last year in the club championship and then again at the weekend at intercounty level! He is absolutely like nothing else I have ever seen come out of Mayo before. Not even his Dad had two feet like that. It really saddens me that we will only have him for this year, but maybe we will see him back again. But the only hope we have is that he doesn't like it. Somebody that has that discipline at that age will make it over there. I will be very surprised if he doesn't and the best of luck to him!

I dont think anyone here is saying he owes club or county anything unless ive missed such a comment. Its just a lot of us regretting that we wont see his full range of skills on show here. Thats normal.

In terms of financial or career inducements I wouldn't be in favour of trying to bribe him to stay. It would only be fair to bring that into play if it was known that he was open to it. If his mind is fully made up then let him go and live his life. One life, no regrets.

Sorry, I wasn't directing my comment about him owing club or county at anyone here. But alot of the commentary in the media takes up that point of view so it was a general comment on my opinion on that!

I fully agree on the "bribing". Its a waste of time, his mind is already made up! Even if he got the big Tony Griffin bag of money, its not like he is staying in a professional environment, all his team mates have day jobs to be going to!

He is only 18 !! Who in the media is spinning the story that he owes Crossmolina or Mayo anything. I'd be surprised if that is put forward by any media outlet.

    It's a 2 year category B rookie contract worth 88k AUSD.

    Thats about €52K.

    Standard sh1tetalk from you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,028 ✭✭✭BENDYBINN

jeez, we would give him that to play for Galway!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,927 ✭✭✭muddle84

I hear Shane Walsh is getting a similar amount to play for Kilmacud

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,927 ✭✭✭muddle84

Pat Spillane was talking about Kobe on the AIB podcast. Said that AFL are getting away with murder and the Counties and Club's, especially clubs that have nurtured him should be getting something out of it.

I've often heard the same spiel out of Tomás O'Sé in the past when talking about the AFL also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,414 ✭✭✭FullBack Jam

It's a bit of an old-fashioned view. The AFL aren't getting away with murder. They operate a professional sport, and the players get paid for it. The GAA choose to operate an amateur sport, whereby the players don't get a salary. That's just the way it is. Obviously, many people will go with the choice where they are getting paid for it.

I'm not saying that the GAA should become professional in nature. Just that it has always maintained its amateur status.

Colm O'Rourke was saying the same crap on off the ball too, the clubs need to be compensated!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,193 ✭✭✭Panrich

Exactly. If he was going to play for Liverpool or Irish rugby, would the response be different? I get that AFL is a niche sport on the other side of the world, but his family and he have obviously weighed up all the pros and cons.

It’s still a huge shame for Mayo and the GAA in general.

The compensation to the club is a moot point - no cares about that, Crossmolina would barely care. The real issue is Mayo and Cross are losing what is likely their best ever young talent. And he happens to be a free scoring forward - just what they've always needed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,109 ✭✭✭Krazy gang

Surely there's a possibility that he'll go out there and play for a few years, Enjoy the weather and lifestyle, but will eventually feel the urge to come home to his family and friends, play with mayo in connacht finals etc. A la conor glass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,193 ✭✭✭Panrich

Hence why I didn’t reference compensation at all in my post. I was looking at it from whether the AFL ‘is getting away with murder’. I was wondering if things would be judged differently if he was going off to play soccer or rugby.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,374 ✭✭✭Jizique

Didn't Tyrone lose a young lad last year who played in the minor champ all the way through the semi final but then was not in a position to play in final.

It is tough on the fans, club and county, but that is the way it is.

Same with Ben O'Connor, who captained Cork to win an U20 but who then took a rugby contract with Munster.

Nonsense. But also ironic given that half the thread seems to want Tim O'Leary to come along and bribe Kobe half a million to stay. Maybe Howley could sell the warehouse. Once bitten 40 times shy with Mayo fans it seems

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,577 ✭✭✭spakman

    OK Manning, whatever you reckon.

Will the pitch withstand a bit of rain on Sunday?

Didn't It win the playing surface of the year recently? Big push by the Mayo county board to keep supporters off the pitch after games, protecting the pitch they say but is the real reason the fear of insurance claims from trips and falls?
