Yeah I see why. I've pulled a 16mm2 armoured in a 100 mm duct, and still had to have access to the corners. If your digging a trench anyway, there's not much difference in what pipe you put in, might as well be big enough

Sounds about right. I guess it's down to the designer. The letter I got specified 125mm IIRC

3ph smart meters are out. We have one.

Once you provide the duct, you will likely be charged less than the 29kVa price on the ESB networks price list. We were charged €5769 inc vat last year for 29kVa 3ph. We had to run a new duct to the mini pillar across the street. Our instal was not straight forward either. Our street (late 80's cul de sac of 11 houses) was wired 3ph to the mini pillars but the ESB had a 1ph trafo feeding it. Luckily there was 3ph MV feeding the trafo. So our price included the cost of a new transformer, and changing the configuration of the street from 1ph to 3ph.

The duct is simple enough. Digging and reinstatement is the big cost. Whether you lay 50mm or 125mm duct is irrelevent. The ESB will free issue you a 125mm to 50mm reducer to connect the 125mm duct to your existing hockey stick. Chat to the local ESB office abou the mini pillar end. They wont want you digging right up to it. In our case, we laid the duct to ~1m from the mini pillar and reinstated. The ESB came back in their own time and dug up to the mini pillar and did the connection. It was the old style mini pillar with no vault underneath.

3ph is a no brainer if it is reasonable money. Standing charge is the same as 1ph too.

Id have got 3 phase if i thought it was viable. If I follow the line it is about 4km away (Just 2 wires on the pole to the nearest village where my power comes from, If I go direct (in the other direction) its about a 2km away.

Ya, not viable. Looking at the MV overhead rates, your quote would have been well into five figures!

Below is my drive and potential run for new ducting. How do I finish it at the footpath? Odds on networks won't arrive for months after ducting is in place

That paving will be handy enough to lift. Have you a pic further out showing the mini pillar?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,788 ✭✭✭micks_address

they are installing a new pillar outside our wall - the current one is across the road - it will actually be to the right of the driveway - assuming i can only bring to edge of our driveway anyway and its up to them to bring their run from the mini pillar? i just want to know how i should leave it at the path so its not going to be damaged when they eventually come to use it - it needs to be 600mm deep.. so i can probably curve it up and leave a foot or so curled inside our pier so they can cut/connect however they want

Ya bring it to the edge of your driveway. You would need a road opening licence to dig the footpath (expensive). Discuss it with the local esb office who will be doing the works. I found our local office very approachable and friendly.

has anyone had experience of getting the 'hockey stick' retrofitted to their meter cabinet? apparently needs to be channels into existing wall as they can't be surface mounted..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,206 ✭✭✭✭Calahonda52

Could be tricky if that's a gas meter?

    May require certain separation distance?

you need 600 mm so pier foundations will probably push you out

You cant, in theory, touch the path

Don t know if ESB will do that piece, maybe

Anyone got suitable numbers for the 12 to 16 capacity increase form.

Will be near passiv so not a big pump. will also have EVCP 7.2

Are most HPs these days inverter fed?

    Thanks

Forms a joke I filled it out and it said I needed 3 phase.. I just put in values from the heat pumps spec sheet.. 9kw heatpump had max 3.5kwh consumption.. its basically just a get on the list from.. they never contacted me I had to phone several times to even get them to respond

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,206 ✭✭✭✭Calahonda52

Thanks, dont have a spec sheet yet, do you have one for the 9 kW

Just put in approx numbers... Max power consumption of around 3.5kwh that would be during a hot water cycle

ESB will run the cable all the way to your driveway (and charge you for it ofc) and then it's your job to lay the pipe from the start of the driveway to the meter.

    Anyone ever see this?

Will obviously be calling them tomorrow. But this is bananas and physically impossible.

That's what happens when you invade a middle Eastern country 😅 looks a little excessive alright. Curious to see how you get on. Possibly some over and back between your supplier and esb network's which might be painful

I "used" just over 1,200 kWh according to ESB networks on Saturday morning. So not quite as bad as you! I checked the physical meter box and it's showing normal usage so I'm expecting it's a glitch in ESBs calcs that will hopefully be corrected ASAP without having to argue with them.

Separately, there was a good bit of talk earlier in the thread about the risk of drawing too much from the grid and blowing your fuse, which had me worried.

I have a standard connection (although new build so wires should be in good shape) and recently got solar and batteries. Also have a heat pump and EV.

My EV appears to have load balancing and draws lower than the max 7kw in order to ensure total grid import is 11kw. I take it that I'm safe to keep charging batteries, DHW from heat pump, dishwasher as well as the EV charge during the cheap pinergy night rate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,788 ✭✭✭micks_address

You'll end up with very little going into the car depending on the charge rate of your house batteries. I'm not running the dishwasher or washing machine at night any more.. if you have lower draw for house batteries might be fine. I've seen a few people comment online that you shouldn't trust load balancing in the likes of the zappi.. what do others think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,663 ✭✭✭deepimpact

I'm leaning towards manually dropping the charging rate of the Zappi to about 5kW and charging on a more regular basis since we're a two EV household and doing a moderate amount of mileage. It would make the load more predictable for the EV window tariff if I have to stay at 12kVA and have to charge home batteries.

In my case, I'm still waiting on the ESBN engineer to submit the quotation for my request to move from 12-16kVA, 9 months down the line since the application and 6 weeks since the site visit. It's been a right ballache.

I've found i have to keep bugging the guy to get any contact with networks. I'm still no further on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,663 ✭✭✭deepimpact

I woke up to an email from ESBN with the quote.

It looks like there's no requirement for additional works and the upgrade will be upgrading the fuse, but the documents don't explicitly state the scope of works. I'll ring ESBN and find out what the story is.

Downloading the daily HDF, there is a missing decimal point! I will be calling them as soon as they open.

Look at the first 3 rows compared to all the other rows in column C.

Called them and they had a few calls already about it but didnt know what was the root cause. Mentioned the decimal point and they asked me to send email with attachments. So have just done that now. They said they are working on it. Fingers crossed.

I found the Zappi to be quite good at modulating its charging rate not to break the limit you set. What I did do was I offset the Zappi by 5mins so my battery Zappi and HP don't all come on at the same time. Zero to 18kW was throwing the Zappi off and not good for grid voltage etc.

The Zappi has never pushed my over the 80Amp limit I have set on it. See below from last week…starts at 7kW then drops to around 5kW to keep me under 18kW. Should have probably gone back up to 7 for the last 30 mins where I had capacity but that could have been the cars BMS.
