Yeah that's pretty normal but I cannot see why you can't enter the competition to get a game, you won't be able to win any prizes but don't think they'd have an objection.

I think they tend to let you play but either not eligible for prizes or playing off scratch, depends on the place

You can play in the comps as a member. You just won't get a golf ireland handicap until you have 3 cards in qualifying conditions.

You have your membership, don't be afraid to play in members tee times, competition or not. No harm chatting to the pro shop either to clarify.

This is very much a random thought but does anyone use 2 putters?

A long distance putter and a short distance putter for example.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,141 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

And once qualifying starts, even without a handicap, you can still book into comp slots to complete your initial cards for handicap purposes, your playing partners acting as signatures for your cards

    Thanks folks.

I thought you needed a handicap to enter but obviously not.

  • Subscribers Posts: 17,114 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

just be careful to explain you don’t have full handicap yet, as some clubs don’t allow you to sign other people’s cards until you do, so your playing partner could be disqualified if you sign their card, one of the others in group can sign it.

Best bet normally is to look to arrange a few rounds with people just to sign your cards. You can just play it as if lies to make them counting.

It’s normal for sat/sun until 2/3pm to be filled for comps as that’s what members generally want to play.

Winter rules will likely end next month for most clubs.

    No. This would be weird.

since you can only have 14 clubs in the bag carrying 2 putters would mean giving up a more useful club.

I typically only carry 13 clubs. Feel I've all the longer distances covered, and have a 50 and 54 degree wedge at the short end. Could possibly carry a 58 or 60, but find I tend towards the 50 for most chips and approach shots anyways.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,582 ✭✭✭VW 1

Follow on thought, if I others could carry a 15th would it be a longer club or shorter wedge etc?

There's been phenomenal rain recently. Unless there's an extended dry period, don't be surprised to see winter rules run well into April.

I assume you mean 14th. It depends is the honest answer. Everyone's situation is unique. How long the course is, type of bunkers, is the course hard or soft, is the course super windy, what your short game technique and confidence is. How far you hit it, do you have any obvious gaps between clubs. Are there specific tee shots where you have a narrow target and shouldn't risk a driver.

At the top of the bag many will not use a 3w as it's too hard to hit or they don't have the power to get proper launch. Others may stick in a hybrid beside the longest iron or say 5w. Great from bad lies and rough plus easier to hit. 7w is a popular choice for the same reason. You'll then have people who put in a driving iron for precise tee shots and to keep the ball under the prevailing winds.

At the bottom end of the bag it's more about what balance you need. Eg your 50/54 bounce and grind are the key info here. If they're both high bounce or say mid/high then you might consider a low bounce 58. This may help specifically with hard turf and packed in bunkers. There would be some added versatility with making open face shots using the low bounce lob wedge. However it's harder to use and less forgiving as a trade off.

Alternatively if say your wedges were mid/mid bounce you could prefer a high bounce wide sole 58. This helps with deep fluffy bunkers and softer turf while being more forgiving.

It's not a binary answer to say buy a lob wedge. Many people don't play with more loft than a sand wedge. I have two extra options at home. A driving iron (3i) and a low bounce 60. Depends on conditions but typically they get swapped in for links courses or during a dry warm stretch where the course is baked dry.

I only have 12 clubs, don't feel the need for any more.

Adam Scott would disagree, finished 3rd at a Major with two putters but a v rare decision

Phil used to carry two drivers, won The Masters doing so

I only carry 10 clubs. I might add 4 putters to the bag!

Don't be ridiculous. A list that everyone agreed on would be utterly pointless.

Irish Golfer just published its 2026 top 100, no real movers or shakers. Portmarnock dropping 1 place to 3rd with RCD taking 2nd is probably the most interesting change. The Valley Course in Portrush coming in as a new entry at 33, not played it yet so that's peaked my curiosity.

Would have thought Valley has been there for years, it suffers due to it's neighbour but is a super course well deserving of being top 30

Anyone bought or used wedges from the lesser-known manufacturers like Vice or Takomo? I'm in the market for a couple of new wedges as my Mizuno's are nearly 5 years old, but they've gone up from £129 to £169 a club, and I'm wondering if there's that much of a difference between a premium manufacturer's wedge and a less premium company? I can buy two Vice wedges with fully configured grips for around £220.

The Mizuno T24's are 2 for €250 in McGuirks at the moment. I got 2 last month to replace my worn out Mizuno T7s. They're one model out of date but wedges are wedges.

Also SM10 model vokeys are on reduction similarly priced

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 7,001 ✭✭✭SuprSi

Thanks both, that's a great idea. There wouldn't be much change between the models too, I'd imagine.

Based on nothing but my own instincts, I think this is the best of the course ranking lists.

I'm hoping to play Royal Portrush, St Patrick's Links, Portmarnock (Old) and Baltray this year all going well.

Thinking of getting an electric trolley.

Cheapest I see are the Motocaddy SE & Powacaddy FX1.

Anyone have either of these and are they any good?

    Don't think I could justify 800+ on a trolley.

Getting lots of ads on my Insta feed for yardage books, and if they're to be believed my club is available.

My question is, are they to be trusted, is the info accurate or at all like they look on the ads, are they generally any use at all?

I'm a beginner and struggling to club correctly when I don't know distances, thought a yardage book might be useful as a watch or rangefinder is not happening any time soon.

If youre getting into golf, why wouldn't you invest in a GPS or Rangefinder, just out of curiosity?

They'd be a lot cheaper to buy nowadays thanks, particularly range finders, thanks to the likes of temu, etc...

Or you could use an app like Hole 19 or SwingU. I find them very handy, especially when playing a new course. Distances to hazards, doglegs etc are easily accessed. I'd also agree with the Temu rangefinder suggestion. For the price they can be bought for they're great value and are quick and easy to use.
