    GAME #14
    BONK'S ADVENTURE, TURBOGRAFX-16

Pretty decent platformer but it felt very unresponsive at times. Plenty of moments I could've sworn I pressed jump, only for him to fall off the edge. I also thought the hit detection was a bit off at times, especially during the final boss. His hitbox was extremely narrow - what was also annoying was, every time I hit him, he'd lunge forward for a couple of frames, which was unavoidable 80% of the time. Overall good, but pretty frustrating.

I played a small portion of the sequel shortly after, and from what I've played it feels much better. Very nimble by comparison.

I wonder was it like that on the official system it was released on. Emulator could have issues with that particular game, maybe?

Yeah bonk 2 onwards are massive improvements. The 2D shooters, air zonk, are also a lot of fun although for some reason the CD sequel feels like a step back graphically form the cart game.

The game is just a little rough, it's like that on original hardware and on Wii.

Only games I completed so far this year have been Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Lords of the Fallen 2.0. Currently playing FF7 Rebirth although I’ve a long way to go in that yet.

    1. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (Switch 2)
    2. Salamander (Arcade)
    3. Virtual Boy Wario Land (Virtual Boy)
    4. The Outfoxies (Arcade)

    The Outfoxies

Second 1 credit clear of the year. I'm on a roll!

Outfoxies is a game way ahead of its time. You pick your assassin at the start of the game and and must take out another assassin one on one. Each battle area is a massive stage of varying levels and hazards that you can move and jump around. Littered around the arena are various weapons, ranging from handguns, grenades, rocket launchers to swords and whips. You can melee which does very little damage but this will knock the weapon out of your opponents hand, as will any other damage.

Basically this is Smash Brothers but the game predates Smash Brothers by a good 6 years. The cast are all either movie spy or villain stereotypes with some really weird ones like a wheelchair bound mad scientist, and a chimpanzee that works for bananas.

Controls are a little stuff but it is responsive and once you get used to them you'll realize theres a very technical game here. Although that goes out the window with how crazy the stages are. They take place in some crazy settings, from a circus, a boat during a storm, an aquarium to a plane mod flight. It's a good looking game with gorgeous sprite art. The game also makea judicial use of sprite scaling and rotation. The boat will rock wildly in the storm, while the plane will buck with each explosion set off. The game zooms out to keep track of all combatants. It can get a bit pixelated at high zoom but otherwise it's quite helpful at keeping track of the madness.

I didn't get a chance to play this in multiplayer but I expect it shines there. Outfoxies was a very uncommon game but got a release last month on arcade archives. If you want a fun single player game which will be a massive hit at parties the give this one a go.

    GAME #15
    BONK'S REVENGE, TURBOGRAFX-16

I had way more fun with this one compared to the original. Very tough as well - took me a good while to beat.

    2. Salamander (Arcade)

    4. The Outfoxies (Arcade)
    5. Gargoyle's Quest 2 (NES)

    Gargoyle's Quest 2

The first gargoyles quest was an early classic on the Gameboy. It looked gorgeous and it's wall clinging mechanics were unique and felt great. It still is one of the best portable action games ever made.

Capcom decided to focus on the NES for the sequel, although it did also end up back on the Gameboy. The game doesn't really add much to the original game. Firebrand has the same movement mechanics and also gains all the same abilities as in the original game.

The game alternates between an RPG overworld and side scrolling stages and the abilities you gain open up new areas. It might sound like a metroidvania but it's very linear. While it's a good game with attractive visuals I can't help finding it disappointing. The NES just can't handle the game like the Gameboy can so there's a lot of slowdown. It's also quite easy. It's a great NES game but I'd rather they added to the game rather than sticking so close to the formula of the original.

    6. Resident Evil VII: Banned Footage

    Resident Evil VII: Banned Footage

This was a fun little collection of shorter games with the developers able to be a bit more experimental.

Nightmare is basically a mercenaries mode, and while fun the molded enemies just aren't as much fun as the enemies in previous games.

Ethan must die and the weird birthday game are fun score chasing distractions I don't really have the time to put into but they do seem well designed.

Bedroom is the standout. It's a take on the escape room idea that featured in the main game but adds the threat of returning the room to its original state before the antagonist returns. It's a nice twist on the premise.

21 is just a weird game of blackjack but given a "Saw" movie aesthetic. It sounds rubbish but it's quite compelling. The deck only has one of each number so you can count cards easily and the second half throws in special trump cards. There's also a very nasty twist at the end that takes some thinking to overcome.

Finally there's Daughters which acts as a short prequel to the main game. You get to see the Bakers before they turn and how the events of the main game kicked off. It's a short stealth game that can get pretty brutal and disturbing at times. There's a true ending to figure out as well.

There's definitely some fun stuff worth checking out.

    6. Resident Evil VII: Banned Footage
    7. Resident Evil VII: Not a Hero
    8. Resident Evil VII: End of Zoe.

Resident Evil VII: Not a Hero

This is a more action orientated take on Resident Evil where you control Chris Redfield and have to chase down Lucas Baker. It's a decent campaign but again the Molded don't make the most interesting enemies. There's some new mechanics. You can melee when enemies are stunned like resi 4 and some areas are filled with mold that give you a time limit to beat them in. Not bad and while short, doesn't outstay its welcome. Definitely worth a play.

Resident Evil VII: End of Zoe

This campaign is a bit more interesting. It mixes action and stealth. You play Jack Baker's brother, Joe, who finds Zoe and tries to save her. The big thing about this game is the combat is entirely melee focused. It's work rather well. While limited, the short campaign means it ends before the combat gets stale. This is a unique take on the resident evil 7 formula and another dlc campaign worth playing.

    GAME #16
STREETS OF RAGE 2: SYNDICATE WARS, MEGA DRIVE

Browsing a bunch of romhacks and came across this. Essentially you can play through the game as any character, even enemies. They included Adam as a playable character in this one so I chose him.

...then I died and switched to Shiva....then I died and switched to Abadede 😂 Never said I was insanely good at SOR but I'm no good if I'm not playing as Axel.

In my defense, the enemy characters' movesets are pretty broken. It was a fun little hack but it's obvious they were not meant to be played with. Cool idea though.

    The score page was pretty amusing though. Because I played as unavailable characters, their names are garbled;

    1000011449.png

Someone said you can have a CPU character accompany you as a co-op partner but I couldn't figure out how to do it so I didn't bother.

It's just Streets of Rage 2 with a little flavour lol

    GAME #17
    FINAL FIGHT, SNES

I was a Streets of Rage kid when I grew up and that's the series I've always preferred over Final Fight despite the fact this is a solid brawler and pretty damn impressive for what it did at the time. Chunky audio, decent music and big fat sprites on the screen. Streets of Rage didn't have that, but what it did have was 2-player co-op. Now I know the arcade original had it, but even still - this was a strange omission on the SNES. I'll also argue the colour palette and graphics overall felt a bit...soft, especially compared to SOR2 when that came out. Hard to pinpoint it but despite playing through Final Fight a few times including this instance, I still prefer SOR.

    GAME #18
    FINAL FIGHT 2, SNES

I'm gonna say something controversial. I preferred Cody over Haggar in Final Fight 1, so I found it a bit rubbish they didn't bring him into the sequel. Thought he was the series' "Axel Stone" average player choice for the games but I guess not - they shifted not only the main characters (save for Haggar) but the setting as well. I just found it a bit funny that without any context you finished one level in Britain and swanned into Italy on the next level, seamlessly. Felt funny.

    GAME #19
    FINAL FIGHT 3, SNES

Final Fight 2 felt a bit more of the same when compared to the original but this third entry added some pretty decent features - you can run, you have a special meter a la Super Street Fighter 2, and you can have a cpu-controlled 2nd player which for some reason I've always loved in the brawlers that had it.

All in all the Final Fight trilogy on SNES are a really good trio of beat em ups and I do enjoy them but I'm waay to used to SOR that they've become 2nd nature to me to find equal enjoyment out of these.

    GAME #20

    MEGA MAN X, SNES

I never took to the original Mega Man games — always preferred X. But my god is it long. I hadn't played Mega Man X in a while and somehow completely forgot that it's not just 8 bosses and a final boss. The final half of the game is a total endurance. I loved it.

    9. Resident Evil Requiem

    Resident Evil Requiem

Capcom's recent roll of quality continues here. Requiem is excellent and I really enjoyed the difference in gameplay between Grace and Leon. I also didn't have the issues some people had with Leon's gameplay and quite enjoyed the dark souls esque level design of a latter section of the game. My only complaint is the lack of decent boss fights. They're all a bit messy. I would complain about the story. Thinking back on it, it was a little silly and I'm not sure what the motivations of some characters were, but story in games doesn't matter when you have insane chainsaw battles and some genuine scares.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,687 ✭✭✭Gamer Bhoy 89

I just started it last week and despite me preferring the 3rd person perspective over the 1st person one, I can't stand playing as Grace with the former. Watching her stumble animations get really frustrating pretty quickly. I'm enjoying it so far.

    ..

Couple more games to round off the month for me:

CASTLE OF ILLUSION: STARRING MICKEY MOUSE || MEGA DRIVE

Fantastic platformer - one I've been meaning to tackle for a long, long time. I've owned the game since I was in primary school and just couldn't beat it. Nowadays the game's slower pace was very much an advantage for me for certain platforming sections and, honestly, was not as hard as I had originally experienced as a kid. It was also shockingly short! I had the game beaten in under an hour or thereabouts. The bosses were also a piece of piss. Mega Drive-wise; this was a little retro game bucket list ticked for me. Loved it.

    METRO 2033 REDUX || PC

A very claustrophobic shooter. It contained a few mechanics that took me a while to get used to - mostly of the micromanage variety: managing your battery, having to check your gas mask and change filters when it runs out, and also managing your ammo.

It very much felt like I was taking part in a dilapidated world, one that inhabited enemies I wasn't expecting. When I saw videos of this game I thought it was just gonna be a typical "shoot the bad soldiers" theme. What I was faced with reminded me of that latter portion of Uncharted on PS3. That's on me for not watching a review or something, but I still enjoyed my time with it.

Technically, it was a bit of a mess. It really is a game of its time, especially when it comes down to a PC port job: no initial support for my native resolution (the game seems to think everyone has a 16:10 display - I had to mess around with a config file to get a 16:9 resolution to show up).

The controls were awkward as well. As I said there was a lot of micromanaging your equipment so trying to memorise the keybinds was a bit of an annoyance at the start.

I can't speak for the console ports, despite actually owning it on PS4 for about 10 years, but the PC port was a finnicky bastard to get running without any issues.

Graphically, it is stunning still - for a game released in 2014 (well, 2010 if you include the original) I was very impressed.

And despite the aforementioned equipment management I still thought the little details were pretty cool, things as small as getting blood on your mask and having a dedicated button to wipe it off so you can see.

Overall a pretty decent shooter that looked really good as well. Shame about the plot - I struggled to follow it.

I'd only play the grace section first person, works so much better.

Also, castle of illusion. Did you play it on the easiest setting? That only has the first two or three levels. Playing on normal and there's a whole heap more stages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,687 ✭✭✭Gamer Bhoy 89

Nah I played it on Normal difficulty. I assumed "practice" mode meant no enemies would attack me. I didn't know it had reduced levels though - interesting.

    10. Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru (Saturn)

    Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru

This game is more well known for how rare and expensive the game is, I recently begrudgingly sold my copy for about 1000 euro. The publisher Time Warner wound down games development and publish while the game's first print run was being manufactured and only around 7000 copies made it into the wild.

It's hard to explain how Taromaru plays unless you've played the Megadrive classic Alisia Dragoon. It's basically that on cocaine. It's a standard action platformer but your attack automatically targets enemies in front of you. You can also use a second attack that will mond control a basic enemy that will follow you around as an ally and while cool looking they don't really do a whole lot to justify it. You've also got a defensive move when you double tap down. It gives you i-frames and negates or deflects enemy projectiles. It's very OP so use this a lot!

Taromaru has a lot in common with a 16-bit Konami or Treasure game. The controls are quite simple but the complexity comes from the variety of bosses and set pieces. Expect to be fighting a galleon while walking on a log, a fight with a giant frog that swallows you and then the fight continues in its belly, to fighting a giant skeleton as it tears down and terrorises a town in the background. While the bosses and set pieces are all amazing, fighting common foot soldiers is a little more annoying, but the game knows this and keeps these sequences as small interstitials between the good stuff.

Taromaru is a fun if short blast through some spectacular set pieces. It's one of the best looking Saturn games really showcasing what the hardware was capable of with a talented developer. On the other hand it can be a bit frustrating until you figure out the defensive i-frames move and then becomes a bit of a walk in the park when you realize how OP this move is. It's short length also makes it feel like it was meant for the arcades rather than a home release. What I do know is that despite how good the game is, it's really not worth the price it goes for. It's not quite the classic some people make it out to be. I don't think any game isw worth that much. But the Saturn is now easily emulated so there's no better time to try one of its most elusive games that won't take more than an afternoon or two to beat.

METRO LAST LIGHT: REDUX || PC

More of the same from a gameplay perspective. Can't really add much to be honest. I still didn't follow the story very well, but I still enjoyed it nonetheless.
