    Belgium

Not really doing much for me to be honest. I think Belgium are going to struggle again this year.

Oh wow, this is a surprise, there was quite a bit of hype online about Loïc Notes coming back this year. Obviously not.

Still, full marks for topicality, sending a song called Dancing on the Ice in a Winter Olympic year.

not normal, a genius. He'll be air synthesizing ? :/

    Austria

I... don't think they'll have to worry about booking the Wiener Stadthalle next year anyway!

Correct, but we would want to up our game and send a decent musical act. Its a poor reflection on the country when our music acts do so badly this past 10 or 15 years.

I suppose not entering saves our embarrassment.

Bambie Thug was the exception to this in fairness. Do agree that we need to get back into it next year - feels a bit flat this year so far without Ireland and the other 4 countries. Having said that looking forward to Sanremo starting Tuesday night. Just love the tradition and spectacle of it in a changing world, 76 years old!

RTÈ should show some San Remo this year instead :)

Gabry Ponte performing ‘Blue’ at the Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony!!

    Oh yeah! 😎

(And by ‘performing’, of course I mean standing behind a pair of decks pretending to push buttons - much like he did in Basel.)

I do wonder how well Gabry would have gone down had he performed ‘Tutta L’Italia’, which resorts to no Italian stereotypes whatsoever.

    HEY!!

Joan Thiele, and Achille Lauro, Sanremo 2025 also performing at the Ceremony.

Agree that it feels flat this year without Ireland and the others. Also I think participating broadcasters might be struggling to find artists to take part. A lot of the internal selection announcements are quite late this year. Belgium were rumoured to have selected Loic Nottet but he apparently withdrew because of Israel. If this is true then the EBU has a big problem if the Eurovision brand becomes toxic by its association with the Israeli war in Gaza and turns off decent artists participating. We have 14 songs so far this year and I don't think I really like any of them that much. My favourites so far would probably be Denmark and Greece.

Also how financially sustainable is it for ESC if big funders like Spain and the Netherlands continue to boycott the contest for the next few years. The EBU supposedly lost a large amount of money for the cancelled stadium tour...

Looked at and enjoyed Sanremo last night and went back over the songs today. My personal favourites are Ditonellapiaga (would do really well at Eurovision I believe) and Sayf, followed by Levante, Ermal Meta and Fulminacci. Not too keen on the current favourites Serena Brancale and Fedez with Marco Masini. Interested to hear other views - there are 30 songs so a bit time consuming.

Participating in a song contest, alongside a country that's been carrying out a genocide would not be a source of pride to any decent person.

Fedez always seems to be there or thereabouts at Sanremo, and I can't say I understand why. The voters seem to love him though, I think he could recite the alphabet and still make the top 5.

It's my one concession to Eurovision this year that I'm watching Sanremo, admittedly last night it was on in the background so I didn't pay too much attention. I was more focused this evening…agree that Ditonellapiaga would do well at Eurovision, but I don't know how much voters take that into consideration. Looking at the last few years (2024 excepted) it seems they prefer shouty men (still don't like the singer who won last year (which wasn't Lucio Corsi.))

I actually quite liked Serena Brancale…took me a while to pick up that she was there last year, looking and sounding very different. I also liked LDA & Aka 7even and Ermel Meta.

Elettra Lamborghini is a horror show, though the YAS QUEEN-type of fan on social media seems to love her and her "disaster bop." She's actually dragging down the whole show, there's a big drop-off in quality with her compared to all the other singers and songs. Must be great to be a nepo baby who can buy your way into these things (she's Italy's equivalent of Paris Hilton.)

    How do you watch Sanremo?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭tradfan1

Go into Rai 1 the italian broadcaster and you can follow Sanremo. Yes, Serena Brancale competed in Sanremo last year but cam 24th I think. She seemingly had a hit in Italy since then so is better known. She is a really good performer but I just can't take to the song. Ditonellapiaga did not make the top 5 last night (all men top 5) which is disappointing as she made top 5 with the press vote the first night. Not sure what her chances are now - still 4th in the odds when I last looked. Really getting a lot of views and interest but that might be mainly from a Eurovision audience.

It seems to come up every year, but the Sanremo voters seem to dislike women. The juries less so, but the televoters are very anti-women. How Giorgia didn't make the final five last year is beyond me. Looks like we're heading for a similar result this year maybe - an all-male final five.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 247 ✭✭tradfan1

Serena and/or Arisa still have a chance of top 5, not crazy about either song as it happens.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,219 ✭✭✭supereurope

Not a fan of Arisa at all - too Disney-like. Less keen on Serina last night, but both made the top 5. It's cheesy but I quite Sal da Vinci's song. Last night felt like a bit of a slog, the songs were weaker and the show dragged.

Agree with your comments re last night. I do like Sayf and am glad he got into the top 5. He's not the best singer but his song has a certain charm.

Big weekend coming up with Lithuania, Norway, Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Italy, Serbia and Australia all selecting their songs. A lot of eyes will be on Finland and if Liekinheitin can deliver on the promise. We may even see the winner picked this weekend, who knows.

    Lithuania

It's different anyway, I think I like it. Should qualify pretty easily, not sure beyond that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,219 ✭✭✭supereurope

Last night was Sanremo covers night, where the participating artists bring along a special guest to perform a cover version. It doesn't count towards the overall result. The winner was Ditonellapiaga (who is among the favourites to win overall), singing The Lady is a Tramp with someone called TonyPitony, who sings wearing an Elvis mask.

I'm not sure how much of a barometer covers night is of the overall result, as they're not singing the songs in competition. Last year, Giorgia won covers night, but only finished 6th overall. I thought Ermal Meta was great last night, but he didn't make the top 10, which came as a big surprise/disappointment.

Interesting night tonight with so many selections. Will be concentrating on Sanremo as usual! Really hard to know how it will go at this stage - just hoping Ditonellapiaga gets to top 5 following last night's win which may give her a boost, even though it doesn't count towards the final result. Wouldn't be too surprised if Sal Da Vinci wins (his voice reminds me of Joe Dolan for some reason!). Also keeping a look out for Sayf and Ermal Meta. Enjoy the night - it will be a long one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,219 ✭✭✭supereurope

I hope Ditonellapiaga is able to scrape into the final 5, but I can't see her finishing higher than 4th sadly. Sal Da Vinci seems to have a lot of support - he's from Naples, and apparently viewers in the city will give their local candidate a big push. I just hope it's not Fedez or Arisa - I can't get the appeal of Fedez at all and I don't like Arisa's song. I was thinking Ermal Meta could be a likely winner, but it's concerning he didn't make the top 10 last night.

You too..enjoy the show! Hopefully it'll be wrapped up by 1am.

Thanks supereurope! Agree with all your points - just noticed Sayf going up in the odds, number 3 at the moment, interesting…. really like it, a bit of a grower.

    Norway!

Borrowing every guitar riff from The Hives.

    No bad thing. 🙂

So this just happened (wait till the end)!! 😮

    Decent song from Finland.

    Because they’re Finland.

Good voice, but the song not doing much for me. Will be unfavourably compared to Maneskin.

Here's what else was picked tonight:

    Bulgaria

Actually think this is decent enough from Bulgaria. An easy qualifier, I can see a good televote too

    Germany

Not a bad song, just a bit nondescript. The comparisons to Fuego won't be long coming, and I suppose calling the song Fire doesn't exactly help 😅

    Serbia

    It's a no from me

Sal Da Vinci has won Samremo in Italy, but no confirmation yet if he's going to Eurovision

Edit: Has since confirmed he's going!

Wouldn't have sounded out of place at Eurovision in 1996. Italy are a Eurovision powerhouse, but I can't see them picking up major points with this if it goes to Vienna. Would surely be their worst result for quite some time.

The big winner of the night though is Finland, as we finally got a live performance of Liekinheitin

Obviously too early to call this a winner yet, but this will be up there in May. They got a record score in the Finnish national final, even higher than Kaarija.
