I can't see RTÉ temping him away, he's the most listened to non-RTÉ radio show, most listened to non-News programme on the Cash machine go load network of stations.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

very recent interview with Ian and the UK anorak Live Luke here:

Ian Dempsey - Radio Greats - Apple Podcasts

Ian mentions some of the slots he had on Radio 2 / 2FM before his move to 2FM breakfast in 1988, but does not mention them all, for example around 1985 - 86 he presented weekday 2pm to 4.30pm afternoons and around 1987 12 to 2pm lunchtime, that was his last slot before taking over breakfast from Marty Whelan and briefly Maxi.

In my case and some other posters, I was speculating about what he might do when he has retired, rather than while still a fulltime presenter.

He is 65 this year. I think he will be a full time presenter for the next 5 years at least IMO.

If he does retire I think it will be to RTÉ GOLD, but before that I'd say he'll first end up on Weekend's on Today FM.

Or maybe he will just simple retire and be happy to retire away from Radio presenting.

From what I remember he was on breakfast for a while in 87/88 but when Dempsey Den became popular he was moved to the 12-2 slot for a while and Maxi took over the breakfast slot. Didn’t last very long.

It goes to show how hard it was to replace Dempsey on 2FM. Along with Gerry Ryan, he was the biggest star the station ever had.

Radio 2FM schedule Feb 88 when Ian was on afternoons and then over to Dempsey's Den from 4pm to 6pm on RTE1 (before the move to 3pm to 6pm Network 2 TV in Autumn 88)

Question: I always assumed it was 2FM, but the FM seems to have been added in the mid-80s, was it just know as 2FM on air until 1989 or did they rename in 1989 on air?

RTÉ2 would have relaunched in 1988 as Network 2, moving all children's TV over except for Saturday Morning which remained on RTÉ1 until the mid-1990's if not the 1997 relaunch of the channel as N2.

they were identifying for a good while as Radio 2FM or just 2FM before the ‘official’ rebranding early in 1989.

They had finally managed to go 24 hours a day in 1987(!) and had a really nice tv ad to along with it.

I’ve seen the 2FM logo used as early as 1986 and it was identified as Radio 2FM around this time.

I loved the live overnights on Radio 2 / 2FM - no specific playlist just the choice of the DJ and you could hear anything. In the 90s these shifts with the one DJ would last 6 and sometimes 7 hours.

The voicetracked "world web radio" in around 1999 replaced this on 2FM, basically it was the overnight presenter (such as Gerry Wilson) inviting e-mail requests and mentioning weird / wonderful websites that caught his eye !!. Unique at the time I guess but it was never the same as the previous 10/12 years of live overnights.

Pity there is no live overnight radio in Ireland in 2026 and I don't think there has been since I think FM104 was the last Irish station to in the early 2010s ???.

    what’s RTE Gold

The narrower a man’s mind, the broader his statements.

The overnights had a love of “Slave to the Rhythm” by Grace Jones at one stage .. the full 12inch mix. Handy toilet/smoke break tune! Also I think the world web radio branding was in use for a number of years before they became automated, usually with Gerry Wilson.

RTÉ Gold is their "digital only" station, its available on Soarview and online.

    https://www.rte.ie/radio/gold/

It was part of a set of digital only radio stations from RTÉ, the rest were 2xm, pulse, rtejr, chill and R1 Extra, all of which closed at the end of 2025.
