    Hi ruddy,

Doing a great job. I will be 70 this year my wife will be 66, our current plan is Essential Health 300 with Laya, up for renewal 1/3/26. We are looking for something similar which is a bit cheaper. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Regards

Big questions is do you need full cover for orthopaedic and ophthalmic procedures? If you do you have very limited options, if willing to take on a co-payment on this you will have a number of options avvailable.

That's what I thought. To me its yet another way to get around community rating. If you're with (some?) group schemes you can even temporarily switch to a scheme with a higher benefit, should the need arise.

Is the concession on a case by case basis, do you know? For example, I'm a member of a reasonable large retired pensioners group. Would they be considered for a group scheme and, if so, would this concession be a matter for seperate negotiation.

    Thanks in advance…

    Hi Ruddy

Appreciate all your work and time in this thread.

Me (36) and my wife (33) are both on Laya Inspire. Renewel date is April 1st. We are happy with the level of cover but there has been a massive creep in the costs of the premium (another this afternoon announced) Is there anything else we should be considering for similar cover. We have one child (2) who was added to our plan day one so is on a juve version of inspire. He needs consultant cover for asthma.

We live in Cork and would access the bons.

    Thank you!

Yes its done on a case by case basis by the insurers, they would look at the scheme and claims history before every granting it. A good adviser usually needs to push them and they typically only give it on schemes with a good age profile as likely that it will not be too adversely affected.

If you said you where a member of a young large group you could definately have a good chance with some adviser involement but based on the fact its a retired pensioner group its very unlikely.

What benefit do you actually get, do they give you a discount on certain plans at least?

Ok, so Laya have just made a massive announcement today. While the price increase is a negative the main point for me is that there are benefit changes in a massive range of plans. That includes increase excess's and co payments for orthopaedic procedures.

I expect Irish life will also announce a price increase from 1st of April. My advise to you would be to move to Health Guide 2 ( https://www.totalhealthcover.ie/health-insurance-quote?preselectedPlan=170H3D1 ), take the plan out from the 31st of march (avoid the potential price increase form the 1st of April). This would cost you €3,208 for the two adults against your €3,578 on Inspire. Without knowing the name of the plan i cant confirm re your child. From 1st of April Inspire has a 40% shortfall for Orthopaedic and €10 day to day excess (this is not shown on HIA yet). See HIA link below:

Thanks Ruddy. I will look at that plan now.

My son is on inspire as well. What would you recommend for him?

I would be looking at Inspire if you want to stay with Laya or looking at health guide 2 https://www.totalhealthcover.ie/health-insurance-quote?preselectedPlan=170H3D1 if open to a switch.

You have lots of options if you want less day to day cover you could reduce your premium. But inspire and healthguide 2 delver better day to day and hospital cover (excluding ortho) for cheaper.

    Hi Ruddy,

Back again, I was on to Laya and they offered Signify Plus @€ 2,935.57 or Irish Health My Plan 150 @ €2,600.

Any pitfalls in anyone of them? No one offered me the ones you recommended. Thank you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

they are both lower coverage then the ones I recommended but both decent plans.

    Hi Ruddy,

I'm currently paying for my parents health insurance (76 and 80 years old) who both have a medical card for GP/everyday expenses. Both have recently had orthopeadic surgeries for knees, shoulers and hips and may need something similiar in the future, as well as potentially some ophthalmic procedures for my mother.

They are on Simply Connect with an upcoming renewal on March 1st, but looking for a similar-coverage Laya plan at lower price point preferrably.

    1. Ortho/Ophathalmic with semi-private coverage, ideally with a low copay / shortfall.

    2. Cardiac, Cancer care and scans would be second priority

    3. Everyday expenses not a priority.

    4. Based in Dublin, so Hermitage / Blackrock or Mater would be preferable for access.

    Many thanks!

Best option is undoubtedly prosper advanced up until price increase and benefit change on 1st of April. It’s €90 more expensive but gives private room coverage and 75% back on consultants which likely they will have expenses.

Outside of this nothing that will save money without removing full cover for orthopaedics and ophthalmic procedures or by dropping day to day cover.

Unfortunately your parents are not attractive to health insurers so they design plans that target stuff that older people need as exclusions.

    Hello Ruddy,

Thank you for the invaluable advice given out here. It prompted us to look at my in laws policy.

VHI AdvancedCare Extra Day-to-Day at €650 per month for the couple.

    M aged 85 and F aged 80.

M with Parkinsons but F in good health apart from a hernia that shows up from time to time.

Seems to be a comprehensive policy, but is there cover as good at a more reasonable cost?

    Regards and thanks,

    HD.

    Hi Ruddy.

I'm currently on Irish Life Kick Off Health & have been since 2019. My renewal is 12/03/26 & I'll be 42 next month also. The monthly will be €64.90 after renewal. Obviously it's not huge sums of money but I have been unemployed since my job was made redundant in August of last year.

I have rheumatoid arthritis. I have at most, 2 consultations for this a year and claiming for these visits has only gone towards the outpatient excess of €125 so there's no money back from them. I have the beginning of osteoarthritis but have had no need for any care for this yet. I don't have any other health issues at present.

The only benefits I really use are the digital doctor and I have travel insurance included. I wouldn't have many GP visits either to claim back on - I'm not eligible for GP visit card or Medical Card due to my wife's salary.

Am I better off staying as is? Or are there better plans out there for similar monthly. Or would I be better off going to a higher plan that would have some consultation cover. I understand it's probably a pretty basic policy.

    Thank you in advance.

where are they based? What hospitals and expenses do the claim? Very likely they are over insured here and good save a lot of money but if you could give me some more information (you can pm if you wish) I’ll come up with a few plans to look at,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

being honest not a mad fan of kick off. It’s actually priced fairly good for the benefits but it’s too in between. For example it only covers 65% in private hospitals so you might be left with a massive bill on it if you went to one. This is why I would personally lower cover to first cover if needing to save money and pocket difference for expenses or look to upgrade to one of the my plan products (500/350/150) which would give you certainty on costs.

    Discounted Price Adult

    MyPlan 500 Day to day

    €1,147

    €1,034.75

Thank you, it's very much appreciated. I'll have a look through these. Though at first glance, I may be better off on First Cover/Extra at the moment & next year I'll consider changing to a better plan.

    Hi Ruddy,

Just to let you know I took your advice and went with Inspire. Thanks again.

    HI Ruddy,

I would really appreciate some of your expert advice, if possible please ?

Myself(51)and my husband(55)are currently on Laya Simply Connect Plus with renewal 1st March. Both of us have osteoarthritis but have no immediate plans for replacements at this time. Laya have offered us a discount of 420e to stay on plan. Given that sweetener would you still recommend Prosper Advance ?

If we were willing to take on 20% shortfall for orthopaedics would you recommend Inpsire Plus or Prosper Care? ( I am aware of 2yr upgrade rule if we reduce cover now )

We have 2 young adults 25 and 21 on Vhi Enhanced Care 250 day to day . Their renewal is 26th March 2026 they get 5% discount on premium which works out 148.65e per month. Both are in good health but would like to keep gp, physiotherapy, minor injury unit access for 25yr old who is prone to sporting injuries. He also makes use of optical benefits.

We are just trying to balance the books a little as we are facing a bill close to 600e per month for health insurance for the 4 of us. That's appropriately 100e more than last year.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

I would still look to move to prosper advanced due to the big improvement in cover with 75% on outpatient plus private room. Likely you will reassess this next year due to changes to prosper advanced for renewals after 1st April.

Prosper care is better coverage but has higher ortho excess so depends what is more important, if orthopaedic is a concern I’d go to inspire plus and take on 20% shortfall.

The enhanced care range is strong and if happy with benefits I wouldn’t be recommending a change of plan.

    Hi Ruddy,

Thank you for your prompt advice.

I thought Prosper Care had 20% shortfall for orthopaedics the same as Inspire Plus. Is it the room excesses that make more expensive? Health insurance is a minefield at the minute.

Thank you for advice re the kids.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

sorry you are correct it’s not going to 40% shortfall until 1st of April so I would be saying prosper care over inspire as better day to day cover and much lower excess in high techs

    Hi Ruddy,

I’m currently on Pmi 63 10 with VHI but thinking of switching to IL Health Guide 2. However LH Plan Pro looks good as well. €4k shortfall on ortho which I am okay with. Hospitals, day to day and urgent care looks good on Plan Pro.

Are there major differences between Health Guide 2 and Plan Pro?

    Many thanks
