Off the Ball ( I know, I know) are once again pushing the narrative that Gus McCarthy should go to Connacht in order to keep his prospects of playing in the World Cup alive.

I can' t imagine if Will Connors, Ciaran Frawley and potentially Jordan Larmour and Gus McCarthy all went to Connacht that not only Leinster would be pissed off but Ulster and Munster fans will be shouting from the rooftops as to why Connacht have been able to nab four Irish internationals.

Will Connors leaving made sense, especially with how high Leinster seem to be on Josh Neill. Ciaran Frawley makes sense because he wants to play fly half. Jordan Larmour makes way less sense (if he actually goes), Mack Hansen, Shayne Bolton and Sam Gilbert are starting ahead of him, he would be trading coming off the bench and playing decent minutes with Leinster to doing the same with Connacht.

For Gus, I can see the alure of playing for Connacht under Lancaster, it does put him in the shop window for the Ireland squad and with young lads like Billy Bohan and Fiachna Barrett as well as Finlay Bealham, Jack Aungier and the new Loosehead Francois van Wyk, he has a good group of props left and right of him but I can see John McKee or Lee Fitzpatrick at Connacht quicker than I can see Leinster letting Gus go.

Not a bad side at all considering how many players are away on international duty. I'd be expecting a win…but maybe not a try bonus point.

I thought Gus McCarthy signed a new contract last year.

Both Sheehan and Kelleher's contracts expire this season.

If I was Gus (Who came off the bench in last years Triple Crown game v Wales) I would be going nowhere.

On Contracts (usually get announcements around this time of year for Leinster contracts)
The following are due for renewal this season:

    7.Scott Penny - Leinster/ (2024) / Expiry 2025/26

    15.Hugo Keenan - CC Expiry 2025/26

Not Sure if the following are due for renewal this season:

    1.Paddy McCarthy - Leinster/Signed May 2024 Expiry 2025/26?

    3.Tom Clarkson - Leinster/ (2023) / Expiry 2025/26?

Kind of a tough one for McCarthy, he is one injury away from every match day squad but also behind two quality players 27 & 28 years of age. Tough choice, if he was able to get 1st choice at C,M or U then it might be worth a move. IMO he should stick for 1 year and see what develops.

Reports from France that McGrath has signed with Perpignan for next season. Really leaves us short at 9 and another important player gone while the internationals are away.

A signing at 9 must be a priority now.

Not quite the profile I was thinking of to be honest. Think an NIQ spot will be needed. Gunne isn't there yet and presume Gibson Park will be protected as much as possible with IRFU in a world cup year. Massively leadership gone aswell for when the internationals are away.

No idea who would be available but Perpignan were in for McGrath or Faf De Klerk apparently. Leinster may make a move for him if he is available with Perpignan going with McGrath. No idea how he has been playing out in Japan though and will be 35 next season.

I think due to the age profile of McGrath and Gibson-Park, it always was essential to bring a new scrum half in. Gunne is someone they rate extremely highly but they aren't ready to hand him the keys just yet.

I always thought that Gibson-Parks role for Leinster and Ireland next season onward (If he signs a deal until the World cup) was being the dynamo off the subs bench a la Faff De Klerk for the Springboks. They will more than likely go the NIQ route to bring in some depth. Grant Williams or Jaden Hendrikse probably isn't happening ( Grant Williams would be amazing in a Leinster jersey). I wonder would Finlay Christie be an option? Out of contract and the end of the season for the Blues and his game is very similar to McGraths.

Team is out for the Cardiff game. Really like the look of it all things considered. Great to see Gunne get a start next to Harry and Spicer start. Probably would preferred Tector at 12 with Henshaw on the bench.

I don't buy into the "moving for the sake of development" narrative that lazy pundits pedal for clicks BUT Leinsters hand might be forced here a bit. Budget has to be considered here with the central contracts model changing.

It wont be a factor until next season but there's a good chance Gus gets himself to 10+ Irish caps by then.

That would put him on a different pay scale. And rightly so. Good on him.

Can Leinster afford to carry a 3rd choice hooker who can command a healthy salary?

John McKee and Stephen Smyth are both very solid players with Smyth travelling with the senior squad during the summer and having Emerging Ireland and Ireland A appearances. There's definitely the makings of a really decent player there and McKee has been excellent this season especially.

Glad to see Synman on the bench. Will be a big impact coming on in the second half. Haven't seen too much of Spicer personally so looking forward to seeing him from the start. Good pace with Ioane and the wings.

I would like to see more of Tector at 12 as he's been fantastic all season.

But makes sense to keep him on the bench as our 10 cover. I reckon Andy has put in a request to only give Harry 50 minutes and to whip him off at the first sign of any niggle

Spicer in for his first start. Delighted for him.

    Hopefully he goes well

Is Soroka injured again? Delighted to see JOB back, hope he can keep up his early season form.

He must be. Leinster are always so smoke and mirrors with him and his injury status (more so than usual)

Afaik his foot issue is quite chronic though so perhaps it's less a case of needing an official update and just something they manage with him.

It'll make things easier for Sparrow in the scrums to have two good scrumaggers in the front row with him in McKee and Cahir and the heft of Spicer behind him. It's good to see them backing Sparrow to start ahead of Slimani after his encouraging performance versus Edinburgh.

Less good is the way Hugh Cooney's been almost completely shut out since Ioane arrived. This'll be Ioane's eighth appearance, and Cooney has only featured once since he arrived when he'd played in five out of six before that. It's hard to see him featuring much at all for the rest of the season either with the SA tour already out of the way and Ringrose, Ioane and Jamie Osborne around the squad. I wonder would there be an opening for a loan move somewhere for him (and for Oliver Coffey and Tadhg Brophy if the rumours of McGrath leaving are true) to put him in a better position for next season. It worked for Harry Byrne.

I really hate the Ioane signing for that reason. This was the season to give the young lads their opportunities. Bringing in a player to block that is terrible mnaagement, especially given how little he's contributed.

Apparently players can say they do not wish to have their injury made public.

At least that's what was suggested here when I asked the same.

Pity if he's still injured..he's a real prospect & the opportunity really opened up for him with Baird injured

Mcgrath looks to be off to France, his leadership over the last few years has been a key component to Leinster continually being top of the URC table

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,080 ✭✭✭✭The Iron Giant

Great time for him to go. His performances have improved massively in the last two years after having a very rough year a few years back. You'd hope he's getting the big payday he deserves after 14 years with us and ~250 appearances. For Leinster, Fintan Gunne will get more minutes which is a win.

I always forget that Luke is still pretty young at 33 (a year younger than Gibson Park) and likely has many years left in him.

Lowe is out for the next while with a groin injury. Hopefully he's back before too long. Was brilliant against Italy. We'll need him for the league and Champions Cup run in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 578 ✭✭✭mogwai81

Possibly Kenny & O'Brien on the wings until Lowe is fit. Nice to have pace on both wings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 935 ✭✭✭johnh6767

Good team and well predicted by some on Boards well done. Sad to see Luke leaving as he has been a real star for Leinster. Well deserved for him and his family to take the French spoils, he has given so much as leader player and mentor to the younger generation. Great opportunity for Gunne to get more time and grow into the role over coming months as we’re really talking about Sept for new season.

Can't ever consider McGrath and not feel he's wasted his talent. Probably the best rugby playing on we've produced, yet never managed to master the fundamental basics of passing.
