“Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66-Mas Que Nada - lovely little tune which I had not heard before.”

Isn’t it lovely to give people the free gift of new music - I need to set some time aside to listen to all of the playlists here and comment on them- I’m totally at sea on 2026 modern music so will be interesting to see what I like

Looks good Oscar - The song I posted Long Tailed Winter Bird was from McCartney III which I would imagine true fans aren't a huge fan of, another attempt to reinvent maybe - but one of his most interesting, also he played all the instruments on that track which is suitably impressive :)

As I mentioned in my opening post, here there could be a lot of variety in selections. There are some languages that I really like the sound of, and others that hit my ear rather badly. There is a bit of both in this round's selections, but we won't know for sure until I listen to them, as I only know 4 of the selected songs.

But what could be good options here?

Well, it could be something from close by (France)

Or something from very far away (Colombia)

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

Maybe something from home: the sublime voice of Iarla O'Lionaird, combining beautifully with Irish and African instruments, as part of the Afro Celt Sound System collective.

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

Or something from the original home? Though it might all be Greek to you 🙃

Thanks Oscar I watched it - I agree yet I enjoyed seeing footage I hadn't seen before - it ended abruptly I thought and covers that very specific time - Ram is still one of my favourite albums of his

Good afternoon everyone, hope you all enjoy the great weather!

Apologies for the radio silence, real life has been a bit busy the last few days.

Also, I have a hard time ranking this category (the foreign language). 5 listens in and I still have songs going up and down the ranking like yoyos. Not a single song that I didn't like, so I'm sorry in advance for anyone that will place low, nothing wrong with your selections. And I expect that at least one of my decisions will be controversial.

Reveal planned for Wednesday around 8pm (after Arsenal's champions league match) - subject to change if Rikand does the sheep reveal that day.

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

    Good evening everyone!

    Reveal in 2 hours.

When it comes to foreign languages, German is my favourite. I have been fascinated since the late 90s/early 00s with both music and films: big fan of Tom Tykwer's films and The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen) is one of my favourite films of all time.

Below a selection of great songs in German: synthpop by Wolfsheim and Melotron, electro-goth by Das Ich and industrial by Einstürzende Neubauten.

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

We'll start in a few minutes.

    A couple of stats:

11 languages represented. 1 language with 3 songs and a couple with 2 songs.

1 artist represented twice - with 2 different songs

    and 1 song selected twice!

    Selected by: @Pretzill

Did I know the Artist: No

Did I know the Song: No

    Language: Irish

I’ll probably get crucified for placing this so low, but, honestly, it did nothing for me. I can appreciate it as a melody: something that I would associate with traditional Irish music – I explored similar songs when I first moved to Ireland many years ago, but lost interest very quickly. Elements of the song reminded me of other artists: early Enya (the first 3 albums), Secret Garden, Loreena McKennitt etc. But this is just way low key – and at the same time not low key enough to hit ambient territory. I admire the artistry, but it’s just not for me.

    Selected by: @PogoRach

Did I know the Artist: No

Did I know the Song: No

    Language: Japanese

Ah, a Japanese band. Japanese is one of the languages that sound bizarre to me and could never warm to it. So initially I had this (and another one further up) earmarked for bottom 3. Luckily for the selectors, I have spent the last few weeks playing a video game called Ghost of Tsushima: the audio is Japanese, so I’m getting a bit more used to the language. On first listen, this song sounded as something that would fit an anime theme. A quick google search confirmed that the song was indeed included in an anime series. Another decent song, kind of in indie rock territory. I enjoyed listening to it, although I’m not invested enough to explore their music or the Japanese rock scene any further.

This became the earworm of the category. In the first couple of listens I had marked it for bottom 3 finish. Later, I started finding it more interesting, a nice piece of pop music. I had a look at the lyrics as I recalled that Hermano is brother in Spanish and the lyrics are quite nice. The feel-good video also helped sway me a bit more and the song kept climbing positions. A fun selection, that couldn’t go any higher as the competition was intense.

Christopher Tin feat. Soweto Gospel Choir-Baba Yetu

    Selected by: @ShaneU

Did I know the Artist: No

Did I know the Song: No

    Language: Swahili

No, this is not The Lion King. Here, we are in video game territory with a song from the Civilization video game series. I think I may have tried one of the Civilisation games in the past in the PlayStation console but couldn’t get into it and gave up very quickly. A nice atmospheric song, and an occasion where a video game soundtrack works well outside the game. Christopher Tin’s music ebbs and flows beautifully, and the voices of the Soweto Gospel Choir are so ideal for this song. I would have liked to place it even higher, but from here upwards we have songs that are within my regular listening habits.

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

Oh, someone has been listening to Scorpions! This song reminds me of some of the hits of the iconic German hard rock band. Even the way the song is structured is very reminiscent of songs like Still Loving You and Holiday. Great guitar riffs and solos, and solid drums behind it. Alas, another song that the language held it back. I find many of the Eastern European languages difficult to listen to, and Slovak (with which I wasn’t familiar) joins the club. Good selection though.

Another Japanese song. This is proper 80s and Mai Yamane has a great voice. Not exactly power pop, but the rather up-tempo rhythm reminds me of so many artists and songs that I listened to, growing up in the 80s. The language holds it back somewhat, but this is another song that benefited from repeated listening and edged its way into the top 10 in the very last attempt.

    Selected by: @Arghus

Did I know the Artist: Yes

Did I know the Song: No

    Language: Welsh

My introduction to the music of Super Furry Animals is a nice one. I really liked the various sound effects that occur throughout the song and the way the tempo goes up and down. Welsh is another language that I’m not familiar with (although I have heard of that town with the very long name!), but the song is busy enough, in a good way, that the vocals blend it nicely. Great selection and I will probably look into Super Furry Animals’ music a bit more.

Did I know the Artist: Yes

Did I know the Song: Yes

    Language: German

You can never go wrong with Rammstein. Ever since I discovered them through David Lynch’s Lost Highway film and soundtrack, I became a fan – and although things got a bit repetitive later in their career, they remain interesting, and their live shows are just phenomenal. Here we have a song of one of their best albums, 2001’s Mutter. That album had so many great songs, that something like Zwitter would be considered a lesser event – and yet this is a very good song, with Till Lindemann’s trademark voice and that “zwitter” vocal sample countering nicely.

Did I know the Song: Yes

    Language: Spanish

OK, let’s dance! My favourite song of the super successful and diverse Supernatural album by Carols Santana, one of the best guitarists ever. This whole album was an exploration of rhythmology, and here we are in prime latin pop territory. The congas holding the whole song together, all other percussion instruments getting their space in the quieter bridge and the trademark guitar solos of Santana. Now, where is my cocktail?

    Ductape-Gölgesiz

    Selected by: @Electric Nitwit

Did I know the Artist: Yes

Did I know the Song: No

    Language: Turkish

Turkish is another language that I don’t like. Very familiar with it as they are our neighbours, but I find it hard to listen to it. I have heard of Ductape but never listened to them because of the language. In the selection pm, Electric Nitwit mentioned She Past Away, another Turkish band that I know and have briefly listened to. . . and moved on because of the language (although, incidentally, I will see them live in a few months in a festival). So when I saw the selection, I thought oh no, bottom 3. Now I’m a bit disappointed that I can’t place it higher. Music wise, this is top 2-3 material: proper, and very solid dark wave with elements of gothic rock. The influences from pioneers of the genre like Clan of Xymox are very obvious. The vocals are low enough, as is common with dark wave songs, but not too low to get lost in the mix. Honestly, if this song was in English or German it would have topped the category (or at least be in the top 3). For now, it will have to do with a top 6 finish. Great selection, and obviously a band I will look into further.

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

    The Hu-Wolf Totem

    Selected by: @SineadSpears

Did I know the Artist: No

Did I know the Song: No

    Language: Mongolian

Initial I thought I knew this band, but than I realised that I was thinking of Huun Huur Tu, an ethnic folk outfit that I knew from the 90s. Throat singing is a bit of an acquired taste, but I am a bit partial to it, mainly due to a Greek singer, Savina Yannatou, who has used it quite a bit in her career. This song by The Hu is very good. Would we call this folk metal? We could I guess. There are elements that remind me of the German folk bands that I used to listen to, like Faun, Schandmaul and Tanzwut. Here, of course, we have traditional Mongolian instruments that work to perfection with the throat singing. Mongolian is another language that I don’t find easy, but I think throat singing is ideal. And I expect that live they will be impressive to watch – they actually come to Dublin later this year, but unfortunately the date doesn’t suit me.

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

This is my groove!! From the first few notes where all the percussion instruments come in, I knew this is my thing. Not sure if I have ever mentioned it, but years ago I made a very unsuccessful attempt to learn the bodhran! This is a fantastic song, the orchestration is very good – some passages remind me the music of Fairground Attraction, especially when the rest of the instruments come in on the second part of the song. And I love how the word arís (again) is repeated throughout, makes me feel part of the song. Reading through their bio, I really like the ethos of the band. I also realised that I have heard their music before, in the soundtrack of the Irish animated film Wolfwalkers. A superb selection!
