Looking at those match stats for Baloucoune is an example of stats backing up what we saw with our own eyes. 11 tackles, none missed, 6 carries. I posted here before that I didn’t think he got himself involved in the play enough in previous caps, well that wasn’t an issue yesterday. Great stuff.

Enjoy a victory over England and the tilt at a triple crown plus a slim chance of a championship. Forget the bloody World Cup. Play your best team for every game.

The notable difference though is the metres made after contact I'd wager. We looked far better defensively yesterday as a unit (and attacking) with Crowley at the helm. He's guided us to some notable wins away from home

    On age:

    Best player JGP - 33

Close contender Stu McC - 33

    Conclusion:

1 - Stop the ‘time to move on’ narrative

2 - Let our young players make mistakes they’re probably 10 years off their best if social media doesn’t murder their talent

3 - Andy Farrell hasn’t lost it, let him do his thing he’s a special coach and we’re lucky to have him

I think it’s fair to say you went further that more recently, FFF… but you know this.

I think stockdale doesn’t ever get into this Irish team again, the competition is so much better

I was critical of Farrell so far in this tournament but I think yesterday showed why he's so valuable. His best skills are in man management and motivation. He dropped some underperforming stars and they responded with excellent performances. Sometimes he gets the tactical side of the game wrong but he has an unmatched ability to get this group of players to want to play for him. That came to the fore yesterday, the players went out and put in a huge shift for their head coach.

I was thinking about this last night. Test rugby is the pinnacle of the sport. You should play it when you are at your best. Not many players are at their best before the age of 25. Players usually get better the older they get.

    Random post

Quote didn't come through, but anyway the above was in response to someone just deciding to randomly single out Stockdale as never being picked for Ireland again for whatever reason.

I see where you're coming from with that BUT - you and a lot of people would have said the same or worse about Jeremy Loughman a few weeks or months ago, and look now.

If Stockdale is needed he'll be called up, perhaps sooner than you think.

We should not get carried away.

This was a great result against a poor English team.

They were poor against Scotland and continued poor yesterday.

We need a run of wins against quality opposition.

It was a great win but Crowley arguably the weakest performance in the backline. Prendergast became a scapegoat in the Paris loss and the under whelming performance v Italy and now Crowley labelled as an integral part of a great win v England. Reality is I don't think either performance was bad or good enough to have changed the result either day in an substantial way. Clearly Crowley will now start the next 2 games if fit and then we move on.

Does Crowley need to improve yes absolutely and he will need to be better to win a tight game , the kicking mistakes and defensive misses yesterday could be a different story in a tight game. Right now he isn't a world class 10 or even close. Can he improve to the level we need, I don't know but he needs time now to consistently play at this level. Prendergast needs to light it up at Leinster now and perhaps the removal of pressure at an Ireland level can do this, he is very young still and we need to review in time.

Farrell I think can help by backing one starting 10 going forward and I think that will happen for the last 2 games. Really important one way or the other we go I into the WCUP with a settled 10. The balance is now definitely in Crowley's favour and I hope Farrell settles now but we do need more at 10 and I think potentially this could still be a problem come WCUP 2027.

Like many think there are signs that the natural brilliance that Prendergast has could yet blossom into a world class 10 but he like Crowley needs a lot of work. Whichever 10 ends up starting in a world cup quarter or semi we will see but one thing is for sure, we need more than are currently getting in that jersey. Right now Crowley is favourite for sure.

And without being a killjoy on the performance yesterday , loved every second of it but this England side has now produced two really poor performances, error strewn messes against ourselves and Scotland so a little bit of perspective helps !! Hats off again to JGP yesterday , rarely have I said a player put in a 10/10 performance but he was outstanding yesterday and it was a 10/10.

England are ranked number 4 in the world. You can only beat what's in front of you.

Amazing to think that when Ireland win the opposition is always poor. When other international teams win its because they are far superior. Odd that.

The fear this season was more about our own bad form. Don't think we were anything but confident the years we were going well.

Last week was Crowley's (subbed on) first time since his last game for Munster playing at outhalf, it's a pivotal role, a role where you need to be playing all the time.

He certainly has errors in his game but if you analyse all the players yesterday, they too had errors.

It would be nice to think, that had we any other player at 10 yesterday we would have won, I'm not sure we would but neither of us can prove that.

Team dynamics is about trusting who's next to you, did that thrust yesterday influence in how we played, how we attacked, defended, controlled the game. Again, we'll never know but it certainly looked like the team yesterday were far more comfortable with each other to play the game that delivered the performances to comfortably beat England at Twickenham

There’s too much finality to these sort of snap judgments on players IMO. There are different game conditions that would suit a player with Stockdale’s physicality really well IMO. Form is fluid for some of these guys too, this thing of just permanently writing off certain players after a bad outing is totally unnecessary.

Agreed, good chance he will be back green against Wales if Lowe is out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,674 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Nah, I think he’ll back TOB on the left again.

We scored 40 points at Twickenham, as fans we can absolutely get carried away.

    Baloucoune had a great game

Balacoune and Tommy O’Brien are Irelands version of Bielle-Biarrey x Attissogbe. They’ve added so much dimension to how we play.

When mack is back from injury I’d love to see:

    11. TOB 15. Hansen 14. Balacoune

And then put Lowe / Shayne Bolton in on the left for the more physical, narrow games.

Keenan presumably comes back in at 15 when fit ( is he due back anytime soon? ), would love to see Osbourne given a few games at 13 , he runs some great lines , perfect for SMc offloading game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭longjohn200

I think osbourne may be shifted into 13 and ringrose rested. He was carrying a knock and pulled up on 55mins. I would bring Stockdale into 15 and leave TOB on the left. At 23, I have a feeling Farrell will go with Aki but hopefully it's Tom Farrell or maybe Jude

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,759 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Completely agree, we saw it vs Italy and you’d have to think guys I’ll be anticipating it more from McCloskey now.

Osborne is well capable of an offload as well, could be a great combo for us.

A class stat; as many as all other countries combined.

Hansen or TOB would be a pretty great 23 to have in reserve in this scenario

Ringrose at this point is just doing ok, but with everyone fit it does seem like we could upgrade.

Osborne has to stay at fullback for the rest of the Six Nations. He's now building a body of work at 15 which we'll need in the event of another injury to Keenan. He's started the last three games at fullback, as well as a few the November series and also in the 2025 championship.

I think 12 or 13 should be Osborne's long term position and his best moments in yesterday's game came from him popping up as a midfielder. That extra pair of hands to put McCloskey through for a line break and that training line playing like a 13 to score his own try.

We shouldn't throw away this opportunity to build depth in a problem area just to give Osborne a one off game in another position.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,674 ✭✭✭FtD v2

Yeah I definitely wouldn’t object to that selection.

I'm not advocating giving Osbourne a once off shot at 13, I'm saying when fit and firing Keenan at 15 and Osbourne at 13 seems our best use of resources.

Fwiw I also think even at this point, we have sufficient evidence to conclude Osbourne can deputise at 15 to a high standard.
