How enjoyable to watch our U20’s beat England in England. Much needed perspective on the future of our game as we go into the 2-3 year transition and rebuild period. As for tomorrow now that’s a different story I suspect

    Club first

Munster are not in the position to rest & rotate him in & out unlike say a Conan or Doris for example

The same can hardly be said at Ire level.

He is so critical to our team....way above any other provincial player that also represents Ireland

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,355 ✭✭✭FtD v2

That doesn’t matter - the national team is more important. Particularly given he’s 34 now, his minutes likely need to be managed to make sure he’s fit and sharp for Ireland first and foremost.

Jackman and his doom and gloom all over the radio after the opening 6 nations weekend makes him look foolish again

As usual he will just ignore nad move on

While I can understand your 'Ireland first' point @50HX is correct, from Munster and Beirnes' perspective there is less room for manoeuvre. I assume his minutes are managed by the IRFU ad per protocol.

Beirne is undoubtedly one of the finest players ever to have worn an Ireland shirt. If every one of our 23 goes out tomorrow and plays like him we shall have little to complain about.

It absolutely does matter when he is that central to a club

Its a conversation for another day & I understand to a degree why Farrell does it but the way Beirne,Doris,Vdf & Porter have played pretty much every game they are avaliable no matter the opposition beggers belief at times

What was the Doris stat? 44 of 45 test games...thats fine when you can bench him at club level & slot in Conan.

They're talking with forked tongues, earlier this week we had Sexton softening the blow for Sam after dropping him by saying they wanted multiple players in every position while at the same time flogging the likes of Beirne.

And looking at Beirne's age, they actually should be trying another player there rather than starting him v the likes of Japan

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,280 ✭✭✭Ardillaun

Would there have been any point going with an extra prop or second row in a 6:2 or even 7:1 arrangement? On this occasion I’m a lot more worried about our forwards than our backs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,732 ✭✭✭ersatz

this is interminable with Ireland. Yeah, there aren’t lots of players to have a look at but there is also a seeming resistance to developing players in non entity games. Beirne playing against the likes of Japan is both stupidly risky and counter productive. Then we’ve to assume Baird wasn’t ready for real test rugby til he was 26 and O Mahoney retired.

Fantastic second half from the U20s today. Very impressive control and breakdown work, but also a very obvious esprit de corps. O Leary and Carney were very good in the centres, Carney is one of those elusive low centre of gravity guys who looks very dangerous.

Picking Beirne for Japan game was idiotic. Although…..

    15. Jamie Osborne (Naas/Leinster)(9)
    14. Tommy O’Brien (Blackrock College/Leinster)(3)
    13. Tom Farrell (Lansdowne/Munster)*
    12. Robbie Henshaw (Buccaneers/Leinster)(82)
    11. Jacob Stockdale (Lurgan/Ulster)(39)
    10. Jack Crowley (Cork Constitution/Munster)(27)
    9. Craig Casey (Shannon/Munster)(21)

    1. Andrew Porter (UCD/Leinster)(76)
    2. Rónan Kelleher (Lansdowne/Leinster)(40)
    3. Thomas Clarkson (Blackrock College/Leinster)(8)
    4. James Ryan (UCD/Leinster)(73)
    5. Tadhg Beirne (Lansdowne/Munster)(62)
    6. Ryan Baird (Dublin University/Leinster)(30)
    7. Nick Timoney (Banbridge/Ulster)(4)
    8. Caelan Doris (St Mary’s College/Leinster)(52)(captain)

    Replacements:

    16. Gus McCarthy (UCD/Leinster)(6)
    17. Paddy McCarthy (Dublin University/Leinster)(1)
    18. Finlay Bealham (Corinthians/Connacht)(52)
    19. Cian Prendergast (UCD/Connacht)(5)
    20. Jack Conan (Old Belvedere/Leinster)(52)
    21. Caolin Blade (Galwegians/Connacht)(3)
    22. Sam Prendergast (Lansdowne/Leinster)(10)
    23. Jimmy O’Brien (Naas/Leinster)(10)

Oh look! Just the 2 backrows on the bench!!

Now what they could have done there is have Josh Neill on the bench!!

Seriously though, you know Neill is probably only at Leinster because of Nienaber. He is going to do everything in his power to make sure Nell doesn’t get capped for Ireland.

You have to remember poor Jacques “is the sole provider for his family” and needed that finders fee. Plus the bonus payment from Rassie to prepp him here at Leinster on IRFU coin.

Some of this stuff is utterly mental.

Josh Neill couldn’t have been capped against Japan - he didn’t even finish secondary school in South Africa till December.

Beirne likely played in that game because if he hadn’t, he wouldn’t have had any match sharpness to play the following week v Australia. He had played one game for Munster coming in to that off the Lions tour and only played 2 mins before getting the red v NZ.

So which way is he leaning?

Not that it matters much because they are both not good enough.

Which all means very little really. Apart from some defensive issues for SP, which are improving, they are very similar. All that tells me is they are both average at international level. Be interesting to see a comparison to the other 10s in the 6n to see what that says.

    Club first

Fair enough, but this is a fan’s perspective and one that explains Farrell’s torrid time on this board regardless of results, but it very much is not reality on the ground.

The needs of the national team come first, always. We might not always like it but maybe it’s time for people to accept it. It didn’t start with Farrell and it didn’t start with Beirne. They are all Ireland players who also play for a province, and this is especially true for centrally contracted players.

Munster are not in the position to rest & rotate him in & out

Again, this might be true but your anger is misplaced. It is not the fault of anyone in the Irish management that Munster have not developed enough quality players going back 15 years.

But is it true? Munster have Ahern, Kleyn, Edogbo and Wycherly in the second row and decent options at six. Is it that Munster are not in a position to give him a rest, or just don’t want to?

And if they can but just won’t, how is that any different to Ireland? The answer is it isn’t different, it is just your perspective on what takes priority in club vs country.

Before people flip out, I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, it just is what it is, and it explains a lot.

    Is

    A

    JOKE

….but he is at Leinster because of Nienaber

U know this because of your SA “connection” of course….

Also a joke before you go mental again!!

There's absolutely no need for Beirne to play in all the AIs, he played Fiji the year before. Where is the squad development if you're flogging Beirne match after match after match.

This year Munster have played 1,200 mins of competitive rugby, Beirne has played 560 mins this season for Munster but yeah, it's Munster who are flogging him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,063 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

    It’s neither, it’s perspective.

I’m self-aware enough to know that if Leinster fell off a cliff in terms of player development for ten years and we had no players in the Ireland team, my own perspective might shift.

it’s human nature. People won’t really support a team because they’re supposed to or because Vodafone say they should. They have to feel it and a lot of people haven’t felt it for a long time.

    Speaking from personal experience?

I know from my own perspective I've always supported Ireland, never hated a player or coach either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,977 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

It's also posible to be Club first, still be a huge Ireland fan, and have legitimate criticisms of Farrell. But, pretty often, that gets lumped into the "Farrell's torrid time" bucket.

Framing 50HX's following comment of "Munster are not in the position to rest & rotate him in & out" as "anger" is exactly the type of thing I'm talking about here. Ridiculous.

And if "the needs of the national team come first, always" then the "David Humphreys development tax" should be something to celebrate, as being so reliant on one Province in the long-term is far from ideal. Right?

    But lets examine this:

Munster have Ahern, Kleyn, Edogbo and Wycherly in the second row and decent options at six. Is it that Munster are not in a position to give him a rest, or just don’t want to?

You've completely omitted the context of injuries in all of this. Kleyn and Wycherley both essentially missed a full season out injured. Edogbo missed nearly 2. And Tom Ahern, unfortunately, has regularly been injured.

You can't remotely say anything close to that of Beirne. We've even had to rely on Gavin Coombes in the 2nd row at times.

So, for large spells, it absolutely was the case that Munster were not in a position to give him a rest.

And to add - during all of that time, Beirne was one of the best 2nd rows in the world. Whatver about now, but you'd be hard pushed to suggest his performances over the last 4 years suffered from playing so many minutes.

So you've no opinion on wheather the perspective you have is right or wrong?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,063 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

surely everyone always thinks their own perspective is right? That doesn’t make it objectively “right”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,051 ✭✭✭50HX

I don't see anybody "angry" or "flipping out" about it.

I just asked you for clarification on your perspective.

Park it if you are just going to give the politician answer of saying something without saying if you agree or not on.

And the coaches actions over the last few years doesnt really backup wanting to be inclusive and have 4 out-halves competing/ rotating. Sam hasnt even travelled over to England with the squad which seems a bit odd to me. Sexton and Farrell both deflecting with some of their comments this week

Yes, I thought Sam and the likes of Edogbo would have travelled but maybe it's to allow them get out of camp, back to their families and give them chill time.
