Picked up a special release Lagavulin 2024 12 year old in the duty free. Same price as the 16, which I’ve enough of at home. 67% abv so looking forward to trying it.
Surprised at how little Irish Whiskey that was available in uk duty free.

    Duty free price.

As far as I'm aware, it's the same price for all travellers when leaving the UK. There was only one price on the shelves.

But Ardbeg Uigeadail was about £58, which is a lot cheaper than you can get it here, at €105 in Celtic Whiskey. Lagavulin 16 was £65, which is €106 in O'Briens.

1 litre of Tanqueray was £14/€16, which in Dublin Airport is €31 duty free, €48 duty paid. O'Briens it's about €36 per litre.

I mean, the label on it says "for all passengers travelling OUTSIDE the UK".

Great Choices, I picked up those exact same two bottles on a trip shortly before Christmas.

Really enjoyed the GS 10, haven't opened the Jameson yet.

Had a few glasses of Green spot over the Christmas but the highlight of my presents this year was a bottle of Redbreast 27yr old, I had a glass with the person who got it for me on Christmas night.. It was fantastic!! The presentation case and bottle when finished will make an excellent lamp.. I want to make the bottle glow inside somehow, the red on it will set it off nicely

Pick up a short string of white leds that can go inside - there've been loads on sale after Christmas. I've seen it done before and it works well

I got bored last night and started working on my idea. Its still a work in progress but as soon as I can mount the birdcage properly I think it will look pretty decent. I want to add something inside to illuminate that cool red bottle, I ordered some LED coasters from Temu last night so lets see how they look when they come.

What's Canadian Club like? We've acquired an unopened bottle of it, just wondering what to expect?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38,140 ✭✭✭✭odyssey06

It's been a while since I had a bottle, but I think it is more for mixing if it's the basic "1858" blended version.

7up, ginger ale or something citrusy like club rock shandy.

Loved it in my 20s. Easy drinking, smooth and not very interesting is my memory of it.

yeah, it was a bottle belonging to my wife, I don't know how old the bottle even is, but it's definitely unopened and was stored at the back of a press in her dad's hosue since whenever it was bought.

She enjoys Powers and Ginger Ale, so we'll just use it in the same manner I think. I'll try a sample dram of course.

I bought a bottle in a Canadian offie because it was dirt cheap and eughh, worse than cheap blended Scotch. It had a real chemical, diesel taste. Definitely add a mixer or some ice or something else I never do with whiskey, but should have made an exception for.

A new entry in the Redbreast Iberian series has just been released - Moscatel edition. €100.

Redbreast Moscatel Edition is the fifth entry in the famed Redbreast Iberian Series which celebrates Gilbey’s sherry history with a series of release across the Iberian Peninsula. Redbreast Moscatel Edition uses moscatel wine casks from the hills of Malaga to finish the signature Redbreast Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey. The wine is aged in American Oak for 24 months before being transferred to Midelton Distillery for where Redbreast Moscatel Edition has been maturing in since 2024. 46%.

Am I reading this right? The whiskey is 3/4 years old tops and they are charging €100?

Had to do a double take on it! It's actually the wine that was aged for 24 months, which is strange to mention that and not the whiskey's age.

The whiskey is older than that:

    • The whiskey is a blend of 9- to 11-year-old single pot still whiskeys, finished for 16 months in Moscatel-seasoned European oak casks from Bodegas Quitapenas in Málaga, Spain.

Should note that Dingle Samhain single malt & Dingle La an Dreolin pot still are finished in Moscatel casks also.
    ALDI's Ardfallen 10 also.

Clonakilty has a cask strength one for €75

As one of the ALDI Ardfallen 10 apostles I’m hopping in after the last comment with a post about my latest bottle .Im just home from OBriens with a Dunvilles PX 12 that put me back just North of three figures .Now I’ve always been on the tight ar5ed end of the whiskey budget spectrum but decided that considering the last swanky bottle I got was a €75 Teeling Brabazon I was well overdue another plush purchase .

Now many of us probably know that to enjoy whiskey at its best there are all kinds of constraints like , you certainly can’t be suffering with a head cold or flu and a heavy meal won’t help either usually so I doubly felt the time was right

Unfortunately the first sip ‘went down the wrong way ‘!!!:-( I ended up coughing like a whiskey novice and I’m well used to neat whiskey up to cask strength considering ‘mixers’ the devils work

I did realise from the moment of licking the finger tip with that little drop that comes off the neck after the first pour that this was going to be a beauty .Its my go to in some of Dublins whiskey pubs.

The inhalation and exhalation of its vapours was strangely vanilla- ey but a proper taste confirms it’s a grade A Sherry bomb .

Is it the best ever ? Well I’ve had a few of the Barry Crockett samplers in the Pot Still quartet and that far dearer but very different

Based on my first sub ideal tasting I’d say it’s not quite as good as the Teeling Brabazon due to less oily mouth feel .Id a similar conclusion on Bush 12 vs a Teeling wine cask airport special .The Bush felt too thin and watery compared with the moderately priced Teeling which had a higher abv too

Anyway back to my tasting :-)

By the way I have had a few other whiskey ‘experiences’ I haven’t logged .I had a Redbreast Lustau in a well known mega high end hotel bar in Straffan , Kildare ( before a cappuccino and some scones ) I think it was about €17 .The pour ( the ‘sweet spot’ of finishing a bottle and starting a new one ) was extremely generous and earned the very pleasant and knowledge barman an appropriate tip .

Now the memory of that glorious Lustau ‘nose’ wafting intoxicatingly from the glass spurred me on to buy the Redrbreast triple mini set for €30in the Whiskey Museum Dublin along with a Whistler PX I Love You Mini from Celtic Whiskey Shop and another mini of something so unmemorable I’ve completely forgotten it !

I was curious to try the Redbreast 15 but to be honest wasn’t blown away .The Lustau really is that good in my opinion delivering a solid boost to the already stone cold classic stock Redbreast.

The PX I love you is alright but competing in a lower tier really .

Not to hog the ‘airwaves’ but I’ve partially changed from the traditional larger ‘Glencairn’ / Irish whiskey glass to the smaller single shot much more petite almost thimble like glass and I prefer it .I think you drink less and the nosing is more intense .This Dunville PX12 may have the best nose I’ve experienced .

The Redbreast Moscatel is very nice, spicier than the mellower Lustau. Definitely one to contemplate rather than an easy sipper. This review I found online has good tasting notes:

    https://parkerswhisky.com/redbreast-iberian-series-moscatel-edition-irish-whiskey-review/

Hard to recommend though at €100 when you can pick up the (also very nice) Clonakilty Moscatel for €75 and the Clonakilty is 58%. Comparable with the Dingle Dreolin I'd say.

how does it compare to the 12 cask which is my personal favourite of all whiskeys…….

Anyone else in Three Drams? They seem a bit slow this month with information on next week's tasting.

I think at one stage there was a bit of debate here about RB15 vs RB12 CS .The latter is a bit cheaper and some said as good .To be honest I found both not particularly memorable compared with the Lustau or even standard 12 but opinions vary and of course mood / palate / fasting etc effect experience
