Have you got to see the northern lights over there at all or has it been too cloudy with snow the last few days 🤔 also next time can I go with you I'm dying for some decent snow and cold 🥶

I'm very lucky I have the time to get out when the weather is good. Funny when we read headlines like Valentia Island has had rain every day this year it gives the impression it's wall to wall rain in Kerry. Whereas actually despite regular rainy weather in the SW, it hasn't been all day long and it hasn't been anything like the East coast. Most days I've got photos at some stage (I don't take photos in the rain!)

On some days its just a few showers but they still count as rain on that day. Today for example, we had depressing grey skies and heavy showers for a few hours this morning, but then it cleared to a glorious sunny mild day . Last week I posted a photo of the snow capped Reeks , we had cold dry weather at the same time as Clongriffin, Lusk/Rush, Dublin Airport were being flooded…… so we have been blessed in the SW (except for poor Valentia!). Not taking it for granted though :-)

3c, dry but slight fog in North Longford. Calm and feels mild enough.

Not that unusual as it seems. In the last 5 years, there have been only 2 single days where the entire 25 synoptic station network had no measurable rain in the month of January.

we have the most bizarre weather system, how is it going to be frosty at 12 degrees?

That’s the apple weather app for you. Noticed similar a few days ago.

Turning into a nice afternoon in Dublin…even seeing blue sky which is great.

Reykjavik records zero snow days in January and February. Starting in October they add up every day on which snow depth exceeded zero. By the end of the winter the average is usually around 50 with a historical range of about 20 to 90.

After a huge snowfall at the end of October, there was essentially no persistent snow cover (aside from a few days in December). As a result, the total so far amounts to just 7 days.

Because the 12c is the max temp of the day whereas they’re not showing the min on that basic table (until perhaps you click on the individual day)

They are expecting you to decode it (which is a bit much to say the least)

It’s basically telling you there will be frost but not telling you when

I’ll tell you when though,it’ll be overnight or in the early morning when you are at the minimum temperature

I was expecting better today, not sure how I got it so wrong. Thought it was to be dry, and bright at times. Walked the canal from Leixlip to Maynooth. Started off in very light mizzle around 11.30, left Maynooth a half hour ago in persistent drizzle, total slate grey misery. And everywhere is still an absolute quagmire, destroyed in mud and puddles. Had really hoped for just a bit of blue sky today.

18 days in and February is only on 19.6 hrs of sunshine for Dublin Apt. The 1991-2020 average is 81 hrs. By this point in the month, we should be ~52 hrs. The cloudiest February on record is 1947 with 28.2 h, we will almost certainly beat that though. 42.2 h in 1994 is the 2nd cloudiest.

Every February since 2021 inclusive has been cloudier than average (though not remarkably so).

    2021: 70.0 hrs

    2022: 72.6 hrs

    2023: 67.7 hrs

    2024: 63.3 hrs

2025: 75.1 hrs (including 11 consecutive sunless days)

This followed 3 consecutive 100+hr Februaries from 2018-2020.

Pretty dismal sun totals all round for 18 days into February across the UK & Ireland but Dublin among the worst. Casement even less at 16.3 hrs!

used to like February. Some years it could be one of the driest months of the yr. But nowadays its become such a bland month.

was nice enough earlier, but v heavy rain now that didn’t see on forecast at all.

Before the 2018 BFTE you could nearly always rely on February delivering snow even if it was just a dusting but since then February's have been mild with very little cold to speak of and this February is no different, it's likely to finish fairly mild overall just like December. Some very mild days and of course nights ahead between now and end of the month.

Here in Meath February has exceeded January's rainfall total by a decent amount and there's still a week and a half of the month left with rain forecast every single day. A horrible month even worse than January which was rotten in itself apart from the opening week.

Unusually nice in Cork city today. Blue sky and white clouds.

Last full day here and it’s been pretty much bucketing it down all day…. Though only -3 so more of a wet snow… much better for snowballs..

    IMG_8583.jpeg

Had to drop the MIL off as the bus station.. and that’s when the snow really kicked off..

    IMG_8586.jpeg IMG_8587.jpeg

Back home, the snow in the back garden is now higher than the garden deck..

    IMG_8591.jpeg IMG_8592.jpeg IMG_8594.jpeg

Time for a last walk down to the beach..

    IMG_8598.jpeg IMG_8601.jpeg IMG_8603.jpeg

The footprints tell us someone was brave enough…

    IMG_8604.jpeg IMG_8605.jpeg IMG_8608.jpeg IMG_8617.jpeg

The sea isn’t exactly frozen, it’s more like a slush puppy, but hard & calm enough for the snow to stick to it..

    IMG_8619.jpeg IMG_8621.jpeg IMG_8623.jpeg IMG_8629.jpeg IMG_8633.jpeg IMG_8647.gif

Really sad to be leaving all this tomorrow..

Anyway, How’s Dublin, has the Spring broke yet?

This has been a cursed winter. Roll on spring!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 579 ✭✭✭Thunder87

Looks like a welcome change to milder rain from tomorrow with temperatures getting into double figures for the next 4-5 days, I'm very much sick of the constant cold wind of the past 2 months so at least that's one positive to see out the winter

Rain all over the radar tonight but no rain. Has the sky ran out of rain ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,089 ✭✭✭Bishop of hope

A mild murky morning. 8c here in north Longford. Managing without the big heavy high viz jacket at least, that's progress i suppose.

After a poor start, its become a very pleasant morning in north Kildare. Clear blue skies and Sun. If only we could get a week or two of this

Colourful skies in recent days in Dublin inbetween the rain and clouds. First one from Tuesday morning at Howth and second from yesterday evening at Clontarf.

    Tipperary.

Prepare yourselves eastside. A big rainn front has just passed over us heading your direction. Really torrential downpour for over an hour. Brightened up now, but it was a large rain dump.
