Weckler has it up now as part of "the big tech show" podcast. The idiocy in what he is complaining about is unbelievable

I always naively assumed that the engine was there to recharge the battery only (or to power the electric motor), but I was talking to a work colleague who has one, and it definitely kicks in to provide additional mechanical power as well. So, even over shorter distances it's impossible to know how much fuel they are using.

I have had 2x RAV4 PHEVs over the past 4 years. Combined they have covered about 100k kms. The ICE only comes online if you run out of charge, set the heat to max, or put it auto EV/HEV mode and mash the pedal to the floor.

Average monthly fuel consumption is less than 1.5l/100km and most of that is due to the fact we live just slightly further than the EV only range to allow a round trip from Cork City and to take account of longer spins. The car does about 6l in HEV mode. It’s an outrageously cheap car to run and holds its value very well.

When plugged in regularly the PHEV has all the benefits of an EV (cost to run, power), with no downsides (depreciation, range anxiety, public charging).

That's the same with my colleague. His commuting is entirely on battery but it doesn't change the point that actual fuel consumption is impossible to predict. Which does make me wonder how the Fraunhofer Institute measured it. It probably stands to reason that brands with a reputation for "performance" like BMW or Porsche might attract buyers who drive their cars hard.

The article does state they found quite a few vehicles which lived up to the promise, so it seems to be down to how the technology is implemented by the manufacturers.

The lowest fuel consumption levels were found in the cheaper end of the PHEV market, in Kia, Toyota, Ford and Renault vehicles, which often used under one litre per 100km

And how many kwh/100km to add to the L/100km value?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,150 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

I drive a PHEV too, don’t forget to ad din the kWh cost to your L cost.

Also, it’s not all Rosie, you have the ICE worried too and the associated servicing that come with an ICE. So also has all the drawbacks of an ICE car too.

For those with consumption that low, an EV would have been a better choice and cheaper to run.

An oil and filter every 12 months won’t break anyone.

The RAV4 holds its value better than most or all EVs, deprecation doesn’t seem to exceed 5k per annum.

of course the kw/h cost is there too, but home charging makes this very low.

People are worried about EV depreciation very obviously because that has been a very real thing

But it's quite possible the situation will reverse; that in three years time EVs will be a lot more popular - but lower numbers in the used market. It could be hybrids which then see higher depreciation.

75km range with 18.1kWh ⇒ 24.13 kWh/100km. By comparison CHR+ is rated at 13.4-14.9kWh/100km no petrol. Nearly 10kWh every 100km more. In it's lifetime, when reaching 100,000km driven that's 10MWh and 1t of petrol more

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,427 ✭✭✭MightyMunster

And real world it's probably closer to 60k, so around 30kwh/100 km plus over 1L petrol.

So triple the fuel costs of a Model Y for example. Doesn't seem great to me 🫣

    Plugs. Fuel filter.
then the risk of carrying both around daily.

It’s there. Has to be accounted for.
I’ll hopefully get rid of the PHEV this time round and replace it will full BEV. Those worried about depressions buy second hand. That’s always been the case.

Hopefully the EV depreciation has normalised now after the price drops. Was just thinking about the 4 EVs we have had between two of us, shortly to be 5

First one bought at two years old and lost approx 1K over two years.

Second one bought new and sold for similar money almost 2 years later. (Sold straight)

Third one bought new at good price, still own, expect average or lower depreciation.

Fourth one more than average depreciation (And I bought before prices went up further). But trading in next week and new prices are significantly lower.

So overall we are quite happy with the swings and roundabouts.

how often do you do either in a modern petrol? Every 100k? 150k?

I agree with buying a Sh EV at the moment, some serious value out there.

Myself and my mam went car shopping last summer and came away with an inster 49kwh elegance for her, great little car which she loved.

Unfortunately she passed away 3 weeks ago after a short unexpected illness and looking to decide what to do with the car now. Its not something I want personally, nor does my father or brother as we all have new cars at the moment but my sister might take payments over and sell her old car, hopefully she does. But she's not known for spending money!

Question is, the car is on PCP so what is the procedure for change of ownership in this case with finance owing, talk to dealership I suppose? Will they be ok with it becoming a 2 owner car and keeping same GMFV?

Or is there a mechanism to just hand it back which we dont want to do as deposit will be lost and were probably going to buy the car outright after 3 years anyway

    Sorry for your loss.

There will be probation etc. Best to talk to the solicitor who handles the estate. In the meantime your sister will be able to use the car if everybody involved agrees but she will probably need to insure it separately.

Probate should lock bank accounts and stop payments. The car is owned by finance company so contact them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,139 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

Sorry for your loss buddy. Can't help on the PCP you'll need to speak to the bank I guess.

Thanks Cyrus, just looking at getting around to things next week.

My father was meant to be putting the affairs in order but doesnt seem to have the headspace to do it so I'll get things moving.

Sorry to hear you lost your Mam. It’s probably sensible to check out what options exist with the finance company first. It’s likely they will only deal directly with the Executor to settle the debt/take back the car or refinance with an alternative family member. If the monthly PCP payments were low and the deposit was small, it may have additional debt to be cleared to hand it back.

Sorry to hear this Buddy Bubs.

I wonder is there a clause in these kind of contracts that takes a situation like this into account? Must be you'd think…

FT did an interesting piece on how connectivity restrictions on software and hardware in cars are becoming more powerful trade tools than traditional tariffs for controlling market access, particularity for the US. The news is not so good for the EU unfortunately.

    https://archive.ph/ooKCj#selection-2019.0-2019.110

As cars become "computers on wheels" the origin of digital components is now a critical national security concern, as connected vehicles are vulnerable to remote espionage and sabotage. We saw this with China placing restrictions on Tesla for these very reasons some years back.

Reminds me of the Tesla scene in Netflix's Leave the World Behind (as much as it was a sh!t film).

    Thanks. Tough old time.

Maybe there is, not sure. Looking like the sister will be happy to take the car on at the moment.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

First time Ev’er-and only winter experience so far -.my god- 14 degrees today outside temp- and what a revelation around battery range and normal driving - my KWh range dropped/improved magically from around 18.5 to 15.5kwh per 100kms- to paraphrase The Police- “bring on the Summer, I couldn’t stand another hour of Win-ter” 😀

PS- do temps like 20 degrees to 25 degrees bring even more benefits or does air con cool usage kick in then?

Cool aircon doesnt have anything near the effect of heating a cabin. Youll get good efficiency in sunny weather with cabin cooling.

You also have a warmer battery in summer than winter and that makes big difference too.

You should be getting good range from here on in apart from maybe a cold day or 2 in March
