is there any way around doing this bloody course just to shoot deer on your own land, the fee doesn’t bother me too much but not possible to waste 2 days at it

Unfortunately, I believe the answer is no. Deer have the protection of the Wildlife Acts and subordinate legislation. The Open Seasons Orders, specify the periods when they may be stalked. To stalk deer you must have a license either S29 or out of season S42. The NPWS will not issue the license unless you've successfully completed one of the approved courses.

Is there any difference in this and the hcap.

Looking at getting my license just wondering if one is better than the other.

Nope both essentially the same with the same qualification at the end just different presenters and different layout of content really

does anyone know what the main difference is in the courses since they’ve gone from 1 day to 2 day courses ?

The reason it’s now 2 days is because the first day is death by PowerPoint presentation followed by a multiple choice exam 50 questions and you need 40 to pass. The second day is practical so you go to a range and show that you are capable of hitting a target at 3 different distances 100m(prone) 60m(kneeling) and 40m(standing) your allowed use poles for the 60&40. You shoot 3 shoots at each distance and also 3 shoots at the very start to show your grouping. The second days is very long, I was fortunate to be in the first group and was done in about 2hrs. I only did my course last month and can only assume both aspects were previously done in the one day which is very manageable as the PowerPoint day contains a large volume of information that’s nice to know but not needed for the exam, I enjoyed the course but I’d be lying if I didn’t say by the end of the first day I was only too happy to leave that room!!

thanks, what I kind of imagined. I did it when it was only a 1 day course and thought was long enough. Was wondering if they’ve added anything else in

Well it definitely hasn’t gotten any shorter, goes through the deer stalking manual with you for the day. Best of luck with it👍🏻

Does anyone know how long it takes to get the Cert after Successfully completing this. Have it completed nearly 3 weeks and haven’t got the Cert yet.

BBecause it comes from lantra it takes a few weeks as they have to pass through customs etc. A digital cert can be got after 3 to 4 weeks and the actual card is normally 5 to 6 weeks
